If you think about it, Tommy ( AKA the boy who couldn't stop growing) always used to go out and terrorize the neighborhood, so be could've started an infection so everyone looks like a zombie, and it keeps spreading to other people, so that's why so many people turn into a zombie-like creature. And you know how Tommy sucks his mom's neck, he could do that to other people, and you remember how he sucks them then their skin is left? After he does that a zombie the flesh would turn back into a demon, thats my guess
