This is an example of simply correct tenor singing (okay, by a very talented and well trained man, but ...), rare today (and not only nowadays) :) ♥

Those of us unlucky enough to have been born after Lauri Volpi was no longer singing LOVE documents like this...it gives a small window into the immense power of his voice. Bravo!

My grandfather, who saw him live once, always told me that he had a voice which was cutting through the room like razor. Even at piano or pianissimo

A young baritone by the name of Eric Rees went to see Lauri-Volpi in concert in 1947 in London. He wrote: 'I heard him deliver the high B at the end of Nessun Dorma that made the Albert Hall windows rattle. I've never heard the like'. A conductor described his voice as: 'One of the great tenor voices to listen to from the opposite end of Westminster Bridge'.

Giacomo Lauri-Volpi was 66 years old in this telecast, and his unique voice and superb technique were still intact-as was his physique, which hardly changed during his long and productive life.

Very nice the video editing from b/w to colour. I hope the whole episode of il musichiere will be available soon since besides the great Lauri Volpi there are many other opera stars like as Tito Schipa , Magda Olivero, Ferruccio Tagliavini, Virginia Zeani

Beh certo ... Lauri Volpi Era unico .... E cantava in maschera ... Perché cantare in maschera non vuol dire cantare con il naso ,ma completare , arricchire la voce con la risonanza delle fosse nasali ecc...

Look at the way he opens his mouth compared to tenors nowadays. You can automatically tell his voice is gonna project powerfully

It isn't because of the opened mouth. It's a myth

@@antonsyd7077 It's not a myth. Open your mouth like the old school belcanto singers then open it like the tenors today. That with diaphragmatic breathing will change the tone and carry it further and louder

Amazing! When it comes to this specific aria, you might want to keep in mind that originally it is in the key of a-minor not in g-minor. Maestro Volpi takes the liberty of transposing in down. I also think it sounds better that way, actually. But if tenors sing it nowadays in the right key it does sound completely different in terms of registration.

If you judge the video on his own out of the context of a great career there is not much to offer. He sang almost all of his career in different a sharp pitch witch allows it to be more free like emission. Truth is he almost always sings with a high head witch is a mark for reverse impedance a not to recommend it also gives the sounds this outbursts .

Well, the vibrato in alt is excruciating.
@sugarbist11 ай бұрын
As a young tenor, Volpi's vibrato was much more apparent, but it was greatly reduced over time. His voice had great carrying power in the theater and he could and sis sing almost every opera. Volpi along with Gigli were perhaps the 2 greatest tenors in the world from 1928 to about 1940. Take a listen to his Bianca Al Par here on YT where the voice has more vibrato, but you will hear how unique he was. Enjoy
@alanhowe765911 ай бұрын
@@sugarbist L-V had indeed been a great singer, but at 66 there was not a lot left. Gigli had a great voice, but he grew more careless as he got older, with intrusive 'h's and gulps spoiling the sung line. I'd put Martinelli ahead of both and Melchior in heavier repertoire was peerless.
@sugarbist11 ай бұрын
@@alanhowe7659 Repertoire and suitability comes into question. Volpi was certainly very fine in Puritani, Gugliemo Tell, Poliuto, and Ugonotti. These operas were not really in Martinelli's repertoire. Volpi had an unusual voice with the ability to sing efficiently across a wide variety of roles to mostly excellent revues. He also was gifted with endless breath, mezza voce and falsettone. His temperament along with his ringing high notes and a voice that rang freely in the theater allowed him to be very successful in Aida, Gioconda, Trovatore, Tosca, I Pagliacci, Rigoletto, Norma, Lucia, Boheme, Traviata, Faust, Cavalleria, Barber, Chenier and of course Turandot. Gigli was loved by the public and could do no wrong. Even cracking on a high note once, he snap his finger and the audience applauded. The flaws that are evident in an aging tenor's performance are not what defined their careers. Although Gigli, Volpi and even Martinelli sang far beyond their prime, the public still appreciated how great they once were. Martinelli received great reviews from the Met more so for his artistry than for his voice, even though the voice was great, but less steely in the theater rather than what we hear on recordings. Martinelli could not compete with Gigli in the so called Neapolitan songs. Martinelli sang an amazing 123 Aida's at the Met alone which is a remarkable feat. Caruso is in 2nd place with 91. Lauritz Melchior was basically a Wagnerian tenor with a huge voice. He sang 83 Die Walkure, 128 Tristan's, 70 Tanhauser's, 47 Segfried's, 49 Parsifal, 68 Lohengrin, and 51 Gotterdammerung at the Met alone. Each of these aforementioned tenor's have an intrinsic value that vary from one another, that's why I tried to stay away from discussions of who was best. Enjoy
