Thank you Operasia for sharing. While my father was so fanatical about Gigli, making sure that we had every possible recording, I don’t recall ever actually listening to this one. You’re right, it’s virtually no different than his recording at 41 years old. Absolutely amazing how that final top note is under full control…he could have spun that out to FFF and back down if he wanted. And having seen him at Carnage Hall 4 years later at the very end of his career, my father said that mezza voce could be heard all over the place, almost coming from every direction. That blended mezza voce/falsetto/pharyngeal is absolutely unparalleled….it’s absolutely incredible that it is flawlessly connected to all registers of his voice.

Gigli had a brilliant career in a time physical beauty was still considered an important feature of the leading tenor. Interestingly, his carrer ranged from a time not too later than Caruso's last years (his first recordings made with the same early mechanical techniques used by Caruso) to the begginings of the Dolby noise reduction. I can hear why my grandfather was enchanted to have listened to this great artist. It must have been a priviledge!

En el Colón de Buenos Aires en la década de los 20 se organizaron unas sesiones en las cuales abría Gigli como lírico ligero, seguía Lauri-Volpi como lírico, luego Fleta como spinto y acababa Lázaro como dramático. Fleta triunfó sobre todos los demás. Excepto en "Los puritanos" donde sólo Lázaro podía llegar con su tesitura e increíble potencia, todo lo demás era territorio de Fleta, donde el resto sólo podía permanecer a la espera de lo que el público les dejase después de haberle dado a Fleta la corona.
