I was9 or 10, there were tornado warnings, so my parents turned the couch over and my little sister and i got under it. All the while this song was playing on the radio. Every time i hear this song i sense that same feeling of peace and protection as i did back then...praise God!

Couldn 't quite top the charts, but Laurie London's "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" made it to #2 in the US in 1958. Not bad for a thirteen year-old kid from England. One of the catchiest pop songs ever, I fondly remember hearing this when I was very young. Thanks for sharing!

Wikipedia says that Laurie London Capitol release was "the most successful record by a British male in the 1950s in the USA." An African-American spiritual first published in 1927, "He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands" was featured in a 1955 British musical.

What year? I'm guessing between '57 + '58. It looks like Kine scope but I don'tknow if they were using that then. By 1961 the shows seemed to be filmed in a higher brilliance and everything looked cleaner + sharper.

Another attempt at trying to push a talent that doesn’t have any. Give them a song pretty much anyone can sing, add some professional background vocals, stick them in front of a camera for 3 minutes and hope for the best. Most of these attempts on ES went nowhere. The audience knew who had talent and who didn’t. Polite applause, next act please. I wouldn’t blame the Sullivan show so much as it was agents trying to get their latest find out there in the public.
@kensmith85462 жыл бұрын
ES did not have to try to push his talent it was already a hit in the UK and sold over a million copies in the US!!!! As you said the Audience knows talent when it hears it!!
@peterkoulouris8900 Жыл бұрын
This song by this kid went to number 2 precisely because he was on the Ed Sullivan Show. In the 50s, if you were an artist and wanted to reach the most possible adults, you played on the ES Show in NYC. If you wanted to reach the most possible teenagers, you played on Dick Clark's American Bandstand in Philadelphia.

@@peterkoulouris8900 The Bee Gees were on The Ed Sullivan Show. That will be on here when they were wearing those litle check waistcoats their Mum made for them. They didn't need his help though, It was just good to get onto that show back then.

This was a UK artist's first #1 vocal record in the US while also hitting #1 in the UK, FIVE AND A HALF YEARS BEFORE THE BEATLES. Many UK performers have blessed us with their performances and talent over the years. This is a great song, taken from a hymnal, similar to the Byrd's "Turn, Turn, Turn," which was from the book of Ecclesiastes and lyrically written by Pete Seeger seven years later in 1965.
