For me, the first version of a song I hear - no matter how good or bad the singer is - is the original version. I had heard countless versions before I heard Mahalia Jackson sing this song. ; How strange,' I said. 'For me this is the original.' My aunt said, 'This is the first version you ever heard. You were born three weeks late, and during those three weeks you played this Mahalia song continuously - and loudly too.' I must have been not much space in my mother, it was my first crisis. Could that be the reason why I get emotional when I hear her sing?

Aside from the slightly annoying camera shots.... MJ was our angel of music. I have all of the Columbia vinyl, most of the Apollo.... And several 78's - I never get tired of hearing her beautiful voice song for our God and our Savior Jesus Christ! When I see these late 60's (into 1970, 71) performances.... Knowing her health was getting worse, yet she never failed to deliver her God given talent of bringing her vocals to life. She could (and did) move both the saved and the sinners to utter silence. There will never be anyone like Mahalia. So grateful we have her recordings to enrich our walk with Christ.
