Racism and Xenophobia is the stupidest thing. People aren't born this way so I wonder at what point in their education all the prejudice and hate from the environement comes in and gets impregnated into their persona. As a mixed Korean I will say that coming from a homogenous society, we can only feel racism and prejudice targeted against us, abroad, not at home. But because our soceity is so homogenous, anyone different than the mold, WILL BE a target to prejudice and hate from us. Like me being mixed, I'm facing prejudice from fellow koreans. So people complain about the way they are treated abroad, but let's not disregard the problems at home, the way we/ some people treat foreigners. I don't have it easy, but let's not even talk about south east asians in Korea, or Indians and Pakistanis, people from Africa etc Maybe that should be topic for a future video : the prejudice and xenophobia from the korean society and some people towards "others". I'm a mixed korean, I look korean but I have a tan skin, and my mom, because she is not korean, can not even enter some spaces dedicated for "Koreans only". This is my society in 2022

I'm an adopted Korean, so I've lived and grown up in Norway all my life. On a work trip to Denmark, I had travel with a vessel to Sweden. To get from the vessel to the harbor, I had to take a smaller pilot boat. The guy who picked me up in Sweden spoke English to me when we met. I didn't think much of it, as I worked in a international company. Once we arrived in the harbor, he again spoke to me in English and told me to wait. I was waiting for a taxi to arrive, so I could get to the airport. Once the taxi driver arrived, I was called out and the white swedish guy said to the taxi driver something negative about asians, since I look asian. Do take note that he said this in swedish. Which was funny to me, since I can understand swedish. (perk of being close neighboring countries with similar languages) The taxi driver greeted me, in swedish asking how's it going and where I'm from. I answer in Norwegian, slightly louder volume so the pickup guy can hear me. As I speak I turn my head to look at him to check his reaction. I've never seen a caucassian face change color to bright red that fast before. He looked quite uncomfortable and left quickly. Was a fun ride to the airport talking chatting with the taxi driver after this episode. 😂

I'm so sorry you had to experience that. You handled it very well. I'm a Swedish speaking Finn and I have a mother who can act very racist at times and I often get second hand embarrassment from her. I've always liked to think that we are quite friendly here but I guess there's still so much more room for improvement, especially since tensions between different ethnicities have been somewhat higher than usual these past few years. I hope you never have to experience anything like that again 😔

This brings back painful memories. I"m sad to admit that I come from a racist family. Back in college, I was dating a young woman from S. Korea, and when I took her to meet my parents, my father said something, looked at her, and then went, "Do you understand me? Read my lips." (Her English was actually better than his!) This moment was the closest I ever came to striking my own father. My girlfriend was the one who actually stopped me from doing so. A few days later, my mother angrily asked, "What? Do you really want to have slanty-eyed babies?!" My response was, "Yes, what's wrong with that? She was not amused. A few years before my father passed away, he discovered that my niece was dating an African-American man. Hearing him pleading with her to break things off and not bring shame to the family while in tears was simply pathetic. Yeah, my parents and I didn't exactly get along well. It took me a very long time to unlearn the racist things that I had been taught as a child by them, and I am still very mindful of how I talk and act around others in fear that I may inadvertently insult someone without realizing it. Please don't teach your children to hate.

That's horrible. My mother is also racist and it's really difficult to have to deal with someone like that. I'm from Sweden and there's this thing in Sweden that kids(elementary kids) used to do with the eyes. There was a song that went 'dad is chinese, mom is japanese, poor little child' then they would represent the 'japanese mom' by pulling edges of eyes down but up for the 'chinese dad' and at the end the 'poor little child' would be represented by them pulling each side of the eyes in opposite directions. This was something that even i did and looking back at it, it was such a horrible thing but was so normalized and looked over. Gotta mention tho that majority of kids didn't realize this was racist(like me) but I think it's sad. PS this was not done to a specific person it was just a ''fun'' thing kids thought of it as but I can imagine if an east asian kid was seeing it they could have felt a bit hurt. I thankfully don't think kids in sweden still do this.

I think what’s amazing yet so scary about social media in the US is that if you gain enough support from people online, you can actually get the person who committed the wrongful act to be fired, expelled from a school, etc. Social media is a powerful tool and it can definitely do amazing things, but when used wrong, innocent mistakes can get a person a worse punishment than deserved.

While not as violent, there are similar problems like this that foreigners in Korea face. I've lived here for 2+ years and it's pretty blatant sometimes. You just learn to live with it. dude, not violent !? did you not read the comment about someone's friends being ganged up by several people multiple times during a 5 day business trip ???? Violent racist attacks are everywhere, and Korea is no exception.... before or after covid. Korea is one of the most racist country due to the fact that they were not in contact with other countries outside of east asian countries until the 20th century so most of them are 100% east asian (roughly 98% of the population is 100% east asian).
@heyitsgiggle
@heyitsgiggle 2 жыл бұрын
@Accel erator while that is true, koreans partied just as much if not more than foreigners. ㅅㅂ 생활 (the ah f**k it mentality*) existed long before covid Remember, we foreigners are the vast minority here. Korean police tend to be much harsher towards foreigners. Most foreigners followed the distancing laws very strictly because we know what happens when foreigners make a mistake here and get put in the spotlight, it's the few s&+theads that ruin it for all of us and korean news channels blasted any clips of foreigners that they could. Very few koreans were officially reported and punished largely because of how lax korean police respond to calls. Racism exists anywhere you go, but it's stuff like this that gives real racists an excuse to blast off. This has been going on long before covid, and will continue long after.

As someone from Europe, (Specifically Denmark) it recently occurred to me how racist most of us are as children. Basically around the age of 10-14 or so, most of us have incredibly racist and edgy humor, specifically towards Asians and black people. It almost never stems from having racist families, since racist families are actually quite rare here from my experience. It seems to just stem from being around other children with edgy humor and wanting to fit in. Back in primary school i had a classmate who was Korean, (adopted) and many of my friends would make racist comments about him, not behind his back but just out in the open. No one ever said anything about this, and my Korean classmate would never seem offended, but usually just laugh along the jokes, (in a way that seemed genuine) bc it was just the norm to make racist jokes like that. I myself also never thought about it to be something weird or rude, simply bc that's just how almost everyone acted. The fascinating thing is that once we hit a certain age of maturity this way of thinking completely goes away, and all of those people i knew who would make racist jokes back then, are completely normal people now who accepts people for who they are.

Racism against Asians in America is bad, but still not as bad as how black folk are treated. Black folk are the bottom tier. Also, Asian folks here tend to keep quiet about their issues instead of speaking up. There are very few cases of asians uprising here in the states. I always tell people, if you want change, speak up for yourselves, because no one else is going to do it for you. So many people got butthurt over black lives matter, because we didn't include other minorities in our movement, but they could have done the same thing. Which eventually asians followed suit after covid struck. The stop asian hate movement finally gave some validation to the asian community, because they finally stood up for themselves.

I stand with Hana. Europe is a very scary place if your face is so asian, especially with small eyes or oriental faces. I experienced twice in my europe tour back in 2019. First at the airport by the AIRPORT STAFF when we were about to fly from paris to toulouse. Second was when we ate in a steak restaurant in Amsterdam by the waitress. Luckily my parents didn't hear anything they said while I'm basically a very chill person and I didn't want to confront them and make a scene there as we will be at disadvantage position if I did Europeans are basically has rude personality from my experience and it's not a secret that they don't like asians so just prepare yourself and please be ready if that happens. however, if you meet asians who live in europe, they will be extremely kind to you. There is a greek restaurant just across the river in front of Notre-Dame, I believe the name is Le Monde Sans Frontieres. The owner is a french I guess (or a greek, of course, as that is a greek restaurant), but most of the staffs were not (no idea how is it now). I think they were Iranian, not sure though, but they have middle-east people's face. The moment we walked into that place they were all shouting so happy like "HEEEEEYYY WELCOME MY BROTHER!!! PLEASE COME IN DON'T BE SHY!!" and I was like "errr...did they think I'm someone that they knew?" 😂😂😂 If you search that place on google map and read the review you will see a comment that said the portion of the food is small. Let me tell you something. They gave us like a very huge portion for every menu we ordered. We were a family of 5 and we ordered only 4 menus, but the food we saw on our table were like meant for 10 people 😱😱😱😱😱😱 while delivering our orders, one of the staff whispered to us "we always super happy when our people eat here. please enjoy" (with a super big smile on his face then he winked to us before he went back to the kitchen). and yeah of course when we were about to leave they shouted again "SEE YOU AGAIN BROTHER!!!! YOU KNOW YOU ALWAYS WELCOMED HERE" a bit too much though 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

As a colombian i feel so embarrassed, especially because i had not ever seen that video, a lot of colombians just dont like football because precisely of the attitude of the athletes and the fandom. A lot of boys of my school who loved football had the reputation of being bad at classes and rude, and to see their idols once again not only show them that education shouldn't be important (one of the reason why the boys were bad was because they thought they gain money like football stars when they grow up)but to also make those racist, ignorant and vulgar jokes is just terrible. To clarify, not all colombians watch football and football fans here already have a reputation of being vulgar, not as to offend the fandom or the sport, but to clarify that a lot of colombians are self aware of the bad behavior that sometimes can be seen in football

Until we stop teaching differences, what seperates us, and focus on what unites us, our similarities... hate will continue to be taught." Anyways. I just want to send my love to everyone out there. So sad to see this, but no matter what your nationality is , some group will have a prejudice against you. I would say In the USA. There will usually be ramifications from this behavior by law or someone who witness it will do something ! Don't fight some people are looking for a physical confrontation and the laws here are different when it comes to fighting.

I’m not black but I think it’s important to sit beside someone if you know others are avoiding sitting beside someone because of race. It allows others to see that it is good to be kind and helps de-stigmatize . It’s also important to speak up when you see racism. I’m a quiet person and don’t like conflict but I will always say something if someone is being racist, sexist, or a bigot even if they don’t realize what they said was bad. Otherwise how do we learn what is right and wrong.

As a White American, living in America, I might have been racist as well if my first religious experience had not been at a Japanese Buddhist Church. I did not realize growing up that I was different, as lots of the kids didn’t speak fluent Japanese, and the hymn books had Romanized spelling for chants. English speakers could read along, then check the translations in the back. I realized I was lucky to be fully accepted, when I overheard the aunties in the kitchen worrying about whether or not my presence bothered the Grannies…who had all been sent to American Concentration Camps during the war. But the Grannies were sweet to me, saying that one person’s hatred would not rule them or their way of treating others. I wish I could agree with Kyojun that the people don’t realize they are being racist, but I think most of them do realize it. They just don’t care. They feel like if a person is an other (different race, gender, sexual orientation, ability level, etc.) then it does not matter if they are not treated well. We need more allies that are non-Asian to speak up against Asian hate within our communities.

im hispanic, but i look racially ambiguous. growing up i’ve had a lot of people from school and home make fun of me for looking asian and saying all this racist stuff towards me (and they did the eye thing too). and im not even asian!!! i’m a senior currently, but even last year the same guy who made fun of me years prior sat behind me in my english class and the FIRST thing he asked me when i sat down was, “Hey, do you speak chinese?“ the year before that too, in spanish class, this one guy wouldn’t leave me alone and kept asking me questions about my ethnicity. it’s horrible and i can’t imagine how asian people go through so much more! it’s awful, people are so horrible…

Ok I know my English might not be good enough and you might not be interested in my opinions, but there’s something I have to say. Nowadays so many Asians are complaining online, they’re saying why western governments are only caring about BLM and they don’t care about Asians’s lives, they want to know why the westerners are holding double standards over this, and as an Asian myself, I think I am able to give out the reasons based on my own experience: 1) The Asians are not brave enough while standing against racism. In 2020 I’ve said to my parents that I wanted to start a petition online to help the Asians fight against racism, but after hearing this my parents were extremely afraid. They thought I was going to trigger out some trouble, and they said “if you’re not afraid of death then you just go and do it.” They mentioned about death. I mean, petition is something that is as normal as eating, drinking, sleeping, and that is done by everybody in the western world, if you say petitions can bring death to a person, then how come these voters are not dead yet? How come they’re not dead? Btw Asians have the culture to blindly obey their parents, and I was called as “being rebellious” because of this issue. There was also a lady working at my school dining hall, she had been discriminating Asians for more than two years , I reported her, and my parents said “you’re just being over sensitive, if I were you then I’ll totally do nothing”-twice. 2) The Asians are only relying on others when racism happens. They themselves are not taking enough actions to stop the racism. I’ve once seen an Asian from university of New York, she has once been assaulted on campus, and she was continuously saying why the campus police refuse to help her in a passionate way, or why the school was not offering her physical/mental supports. But she totally said nothing regarding what SHE is going to do in order to raise their awareness. Later on a person said to that victim “I can hold a protest for you” and guess what? That victim herself thought this was a joke, and she replied “😂😂😂”. 3) The Asians are not united. Many Asians do not treat other Asians as brothers/sisters. I’ve once joined a group chat that established by Asians to help Asians stand against racism, however later on, almost everybody in that group chat started to fight against each other. Somebody even said the hurtful things like “you have schizophrenia”. They are all Asians, they are facing the same enemy called racism, yet they’re still fighting against their own people. And remember the lady at my dining hall who was discriminating Asians for more than two years? She is also Asian. In brief, regarding the hate crime, of course 90% of the responsibilities go to the racist people, but I think the Asians should also be responsible for the spread of the hate. They are not doing enough to stop it, and they indirectly made it worse.

The US Congress passed an Asian Hate bill. We have yet to see a Blacks or African American Hate bill in the US. BLM gets more attention because black people are vocal about racism against them and will work hard and protest for change. Asian Americans don’t participate in those protest but as minorities benefit from the work blacks and other groups do to fight racism in America. Asians were too busy trying to be the “model minority” then wanted others to help fight for their cause once Whites showed them how they really feel about them. US minorities all have to work together to squash racism & white supremacy

@@kimleemoon I agree with you on this point. But I’m also angry that some Asians are still fighting against Asians while they are already facing racism as a common enemy. I’ve met countless situations previously, during which some Asians are cursing, scamming and arguing against other Asians while they are already discriminated by people from other racial groups, and I’m so disappointed after seeing this. Asians should never show any signs of division while facing racism, but they are always doing this. Is it really hard for Asians to be united?

This is true. Also more asians may need to take a deep look within themselves and put their own racism/biases in check also. Everybody regardless of race needs to take some self accountability for the part they may or may not have played in racism towards other people in order to create positive change. The world as a whole needs more love and less discrimination.

Definitely agree with you. There definitely seems to be a lot of internalized-racism, especially in mainland Asia (not sure if you would call that internalized-racism though). Because of the bad history and politics between East-Asian countries, you see a lot of people cursing each other only because of their nationality, but hate it when they experience racism in Western countries. It reminds me of how many of the Asian hate crimes that you see on the media is by Black perpetrators, and in the comments you'll see tons of Asian people making racist remarks and generalizations towards Black people, when they are literally fighting against racism. Very hypocritical. As we should educate others, we should also educate ourselves.
