Reporting from the Volcano on June 5th. Expedition no. 20 ongoing. I just returned from the 20th trip to the volcano with many exciting footages which I m going to share. The weather improved in the evening on June 5th and stopped to rain, that's why we decided to make a trip around 7 pm. It was worth it as always, despite beint very windy in the highlands. On the way back it started to rain however and we got all wet but no regrets of going. Lava breached western wall and runs down at great speed. There is a massive lava flow into Syðri Meradalur (valley above Natthagi) and lava is spreading over that valley in big hot lake. Geldingadalur is overflooded with lava to the edges. I filmed everything as always. Peace and blessings to you!

agreed, i'm worried about the concentrations of sulfur dioxide outgassing from the cooling lava flows. Everyone is casually standing down hill of the flows, and the various gasses, being heavier, are flowing down the valley as well....

It's amazing to me how I see fluid dynamics play out where we normally don't think something would act like a fluid. Even gasses and solids obey fluid dynamics. Watch a video of a landslide and you can see the same physics at work as the solid dirt "flows" down.

This basaltic lava flows like water. When water overflows a dam, it compromises the integrity of the dam. When this lava began overflowing its earthen dam or wall, it began eroding it. That's my concern, as well! The most common volcanic gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Small quantities of other volatile elements and compounds also are present, such as hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, and mercury. Volcanic gases that pose the greatest potential hazards are sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen fluoride. Locally, sulfur dioxide gas can lead to acid rain and air pollution.

What I find fascinating, The lava flowed down the hill, built up a meter, maybe 2 meter floor, then a channel was created so it could flow down, maintaining its heat.so it stays very fluid, as you have shown. You say it only lasted 3 weeks, but that's 3 weeks they had to try and protect the fiberoptic data cables.
@bohdanburban5069
@bohdanburban5069 3 жыл бұрын
That fluidity is a function of temperature but I also suspect fluxes of one sort or another. One of the gasses being emitted is hydrogen fluoride: fluorite is often used as a flux in the steel industry. Another gas being emitted is carbon dioxide: calcite/limestone is used as a flux in copper smelting.
@katykircher7413
@katykircher7413 3 жыл бұрын
@@bohdanburban5069 The fluidity of lava depends on the amount of silica. This volcano's lava has around 45% silica, so it is very runny. The temperature of magma coming directly from the mantle should remain high enough to melt rocks. It doesn't affect fluidity (as far as I know, and I am still studying because there is always more to the story). Niyarogongo volcano in Congo has much higher silica content, so its lava is very thick and rocky. It poured into Goma in a matter of hours, and yet the people were walking on it the following morning (we couldn't imagine walking on this volcanic lava within 50 years!!). Oceanic shield volcanoes like this one and Kilauea in Hawaii have similar silica content. Nick Zentner explains it all clearly in his lectures. He also explains why volcanoes are located in certain places and what that all means. He is the best teacher in the history of everything. He makes geology fun!! I am waiting for him to take up astrophysics for fun.

Thank you GutnTog for more spectacular footage. All of your videos are amazing and so much appreciated. Incredible to see how quickly the landscape keeps changing right in front of our eyes. Be safe out there, those gases are nothing to mess with! Sorry about your boulder down in that valley. It will be interesting to see if it gets completely covered. At least you have the before pictures. This lava is moving so fast now. Nothing is going to stop Mother Nature. Very tempted to get on a plane to see this in person! Stay safe. ❤️

Wow, this is absolutely incredible how fast the lava is flowing. However, the air would be so bad, I am surprised no one is coughing. I hope you feel better soon. Thanks for this.

Just a matter of time. Guess those plans to work around the road covering will need to be implemented now. By the way. When you say “glacial erratic”, my subtitles show “glacial erotic” which is a VERY different word in English!
