The former director general of the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) Félix San Roldán has denied that Abdelbaki Es Satty, the leader of the cell that carried out the attacks on Las Ramblas in Barcelona and Cambrils (Tarragona) in 2017, was an informant, and has described it as "infamy", "evil" and "vile" to think or imagine that 16 deaths could have been avoided and this was not the case.
The man who was the head of the CNI for a decade, between 2009 and 2019, and four legislatures (two with PP governments and the same number with the PSOE), has been the first of the 29 witnesses called by the parliamentary commission that intends to investigate the role of the imam of Ripoll (Girona) Abdelbaki Es Satty, the leader of the cell that attacked on 17-A.
For nearly two hours, Sanz Roldán has reminded that the Executive has not yet declassified the documents requested by the parliamentary groups and that, therefore, he was not exempt from keeping the secret, despite which he has shown his willingness to help and even to return to the commission if the Council of Ministers provides the information requested by the deputies.
He did want to make it clear that the CNI had no prior information before the commission of these attacks. "Does anyone really believe that an attack could have been avoided and it was not carried out?" he replied to the deputy of Junts Pilar Calvo, the party that together with ERC has promoted this commission of inquiry.
