Great video! Can't wait to get this amazing new batch of your Lavender! Sorry I missed the live presentation today. Love your handpicked harvesting in this video, and the beautiful copper distiller that you use. Very interesting explanation of the 15 varieties that you use for a blend of notes to come through on the essential oils. Thank you!

Hi Katherine! When we pick the lavender, we harvest it as soon as it starts to dry out a little, then we put it in the still directly after.

Hi AJ glad you enjoyed our video! We have nearly 1,000 lavender plants in our high-altitude lavender field, located in western Montana. We purchased our plants, rather than propagating them, and have many varieties of lavandula angustifolia 💕

What are the use of hydosol? Of essential oil? It can be done as business? There is demand for essential oil? One set of of distillation is enough for all types of essential oil like different flowers leaves herbs are there even for roses?

Hello Shamim. So glad you are interested in the distilling process. At this time, we are not set up to train folks on how to distill, so your best bet would be to find some courses to gain a better understanding. As for the uses of lavender, if you go to www.aromatics.com, our lavender pages have some great information, as well as recipes. All the best to you in your endeavors.

I'm curious if you can answer a question I have. I've been wanting to grow lavender for making essential oil and hydrosol on a small scale so I wanted to get the most productive variety of lavender. I've read that the best yielding ones are hybrids that you have to propagate from plant material but I want to grow from seed. Do you guys know what variety is the highest oil content variety that still can grow true to type from seed? thanks
@Aromatics
@Aromatics 7 күн бұрын
Good question! We've never started Lavender from seed as it is very difficult to grow. All of our plants are from starters that we have purchased. We don't have a list of which ones are highest yield, but the ones we grow are munstead, royal velvet, folgate, and blue hidcote to name a few (:

He said he was checking the ph every half hour. How do you know when the ph “drops off”? If you check it twice and it doesn’t change?
@Aromatics
@Aromatics Жыл бұрын
Hi April! Distilling over the last few years, we know we can distill for about 5 hours give or take before the pH starts to drop off. Once we hit a certain point, we will check more frequently, and when we see it start to drop significantly, we stop the distillation.

Oh, ok. My sig. other bought me a 3 gallon stainless still to try making hydrosols. Not knowing, really, what I was doing, I distilled for about 2 hours. (From the time I turned the heat on). I put a steamer basket upside down in the bottom and filled the pot with fresh lilacs. I added about a quart of water to the pot and got about a pint from it before shutting it off. I would love to learn more about making hydrosols! I didn’t see any oil at all in the lilac water and I haven’t tried any other plants yet.

How do you know how long to distill the lavender until it’s done
@Aromatics
@Aromatics 2 жыл бұрын
We go off of the guidelines in Ann Harmons book 'Harvest to Hydrosol'. We check the pH every 15-30 minutes, and once the pH starts to drop, you know it is done (:

Great question! It does vary a little year to year depending on the season, but a good estimate is about 150 gallons of hydrosol. Our field is a little over an acre.

wait a minute , if you have only lavender then you only have ONE NOTE, you dont get 3 different notes , because you have one oil , one kind of oil. Base , top and whatever note comes from mixing different ingredients its like music ,if you have only C3 note , thats it , you dont get upper , lower base note , thats it its C3 , that would be base note , upper one would be something like Lemon oil and bottom would be something like , i dont know some residual note of something . So thats how it works , you need 3 ingredients at least to have 3 notes
@Aromatics
@Aromatics 2 жыл бұрын
We grow many varieties of lavandula angustifolia. Some have more middle to base notes, while other varieties are close to top and middle notes. Once all the plants have been distilled and we mix the oil together, a trained nose can pick out the different notes of the different varieties (:

Normal plant oil is essential oil (: Plants naturally contain chemical components that make them very therapeutic. For example, eucalyptus naturally contains a component called 1,8 cineole which is amazing for supporting the lungs when dealing with a cold, flu, allergies etc. There are a handful of studies out there that show the phenomenon and power of essential oils. It's fascinating!
