Dylan is such a great producer...he's the type of person that would take such any music and explain and break it down in much greater detail giving it more a significant meaning than the original producer intended.
@GabeBynoe5 жыл бұрын
@exodus K I don't. But Dylan is a well rounded producer who knows himself and is probably better than most producers he does these remakes of. If you analyze his videos where he remakes songs or tracks, he provides information and gives insight into different parts of a song that the original producer can't explain since it was most likely an arbitrary decision on their part.

The question that comes to mind after all this then, is how did those complex waveforms even get generated on a Gameboy with the sound chip choices you described?
@nitroanilinmusic5 жыл бұрын
It's either the PCM, or there's some specific modulation going on in that channel.
@snailymitch5 жыл бұрын
@@nitroanilinmusic The DPCM channel cannot loop samples like that and modulation is non existent. The thing is that he only explained how the NES soundchip works, however the GameBoy soundchip differs from the NES one as it gets rid of the DPCM and triangle channel in favor of a wavetable channel which allows the composer to basically draw in a simple waveshape to use as a synth. There's a few other soundchip quirks he didn't explain or got wrong so I wouldn't fully take his word on how these soundchips work lol

Here is the disassembly of lavender town theme: github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/audio/music/lavender.asm It uses a command to specify the tones for channels. Here: github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/audio/wave_instruments.asm#L6 is a line which notes the exclusive use of a waveform for lavender town and pokemon tower themes, so it is propably just a wavetable.

Some small detail corrections about your explanation of the soundchips since I'm a fuckin nerd lol -0:30, if you look at a lot of other songs from older soundchips you will also notice that many of them have a weird very specific tempo, this is really just due to the music being played back at the framerate the game plays at. At each frame the game gets instructions on what frequency needs to be being played, at what volume, etc. this is why if a game lags the music slows down as a result. Anyways, framerates and beats per minute are just different ways of denoting time and when you convey chiptune tracks in the standard more musical form (rather then the technical one a chiptune track is stuck to) you can get these very specific tempos with lots of decimals. -1:02, this is not correct, the DPCM and the triangle channel on the NES 2a03 soundchip are seperate and can both be used at the same time, if you listen to the SMB3 soundtrack you can hear both the triangle (bassline) and the DPCM (percussion, both the noise and DPCM channel are used for it to give it a bit more punch) being used at the same time. -Something to note about this however is that the DPCM channel does decrease the volume of both the noise and triangle channels, so composers had to keep this reduced volume in mind in case they wanted to use DPCM. Also a last fun fact about the DPCM channel is that these samples, despite being insanely bitcrushed, still took up a sizable portion of the rom which is why they're not seen that much especially early on, however developers like sunsoft did think it was worth it and even used the DPCM channel to load up bass samples which gives their soundtracks a very recognizable sound. -3:10, the main distinction between the GameBoy soundchip and the NES is that the GameBoy soundchip does not have a DPCM or triangle channel, and instead makes use of a simple wavetable synth, this wavetable synth has 32 steps and at each step you have 16 values to choose from, bit vague but basically all you need to know is that you can draw in very short and rudimentary waveforms with it. Hope this might be interesting for anyone
