what they probably mean is that other colors are a result of the material light shines on reflecting those colors back, meaning that those colors have to exist in the visible light spectrum, which isn't the case for purple. what we know as "violet" in the light spectrum after blue is actually a color that is in between blue and ultraviolet, which is invisible to our eyes. so purple is our brain simply not comprehending that wavelength of light between visible and invisible, so from that space, you could say that purple "doesn't exist" (personally, i don't think that's an accurate way of putting it since almost all people see purple and therefore it totally exists)

About the posing one: I've found ("found" as in saw it on pinterest) that blacking in your silhouette can be very helpful in creating fluid poses. If you can't tell what your looking at- your drawing turns into a blob-things should be moved around. If you can see a distinct arm and hairstyle, your doing good!

Back in high school I had an art teacher that I think was the reason I haven't given up. She saw my doodles and drawings (which weren't a masterpiece by any means) and told me something I had wanted to hear all my life, that I had talent. And throughout the two years I was in her class, she gave me some good advice and criticism, made me get out of my comfort zone and taught me a lot. She had a lot of passion. It's a shame none of the other teachers were like her. Rest in peace, Miss B.

I’m not saying going to art school is bad, but in my opinion, is a waist of time. Art doesn’t need to be study, you find it within yourself, but some people wants to know more about art, and go to art school which is fine. oof sorry for you ending up with the first comments being self promotion, I see you're a helpful person tho! may be a bit off the topic, but I think that sometimes people just gotta don't really go "oh yeah that's great art" even if they see possible mistakes, I know it can be a bit awkward when everyone else is just agreeing it's good and all but if you have something you think could be helpful, go for it, write it! if they want to get better and it's a good tip I'm sure they will be thankful afterwards, even if they are confused or a bit annoyed at first.

Most of my college art professors were wonderful and really just wanted to help us grow. I did have one that hated me and called my pineapples ugly and one that threw a mini trophy at my head. But for real college art was very fun and I really learned a lot.

If you're still having issues, i suggest making little shapes with watercolor or a marker on some paper. Then you make characters from the shapes with a pen. It really gets your creativity going!

I had a art teacher actually told us to avoid "hairy lines" in our line art at all cost like She wanted perfectly clean pretty line art and in her opinion going over an area over and over again to "Make it varied" Just made it look ugly, like the artist was unsure of themselves, and just messy. Like she went on a whole rant about this for a whole class... It was weird

I think your teacher might have been referring to "chicken scratches" and not so much line variation. I don't think it matters so much for a sketch, but when lining, especially if you have a brush, it's interesting to try and press harder in some places to give a different line weight to your piece. Line weight is all about having just one line that goes from thin to thick, it can help give more depth to your drawing and can darken the parts that are in shadows ~

She meant chicken scratches, not different line variations. Try and make your lines in one stroke, even if they are a bit thicker in the end, not make a perfectly straight line and then draw on top.

Both line styles are valid when being used as a tool rather than a crutch. Chicken scratch lines are a good way to chisel & sculpt out a pleasing entity on the fly without planning (such as for making symbols or new characters) but if we're always falling back to it it might just mean we are in great need of studying the subject to know how it's drawn rather than randomly stumbling upon the answer through scribbles. Would save us guess work & time. On the other hand using a single stroke to draw lines can create a sense of confidence & flow that our drawings (&/or ourselves as artists) may be in great need of. Just believe in your abilities & dont worry about the results, draw a line and move on to the next and next and next one. Tho this method can sometimes loose the charm of the sketchy feel or of the chaos of motion so overall learning how to do both and using each when you know you need their strengths creates a good diverse tool kit to have on hand.

@@oliveoil4368 I think I've got an idea on how to do this (just a theory, an art theory XD). Idk if it's traditional or digital... But in general I think the best way to do is to (idk how to say this) "thicken" it according to your flow of lines and the flow of the artwork combined if that makes sense??? I'm not sure what you mean by angle tho XD but smoother/slower transitions from thick to thin make it look more natural in my opinion. Also about my terminology on thickening it could just mean anything like increasing the "opacity"/visibility of the lineart, making certain areas more "sketchy" or simply dotting/using dashes on areas that need less attention to decrease the "thickening". I think it's all about giving it more flow and stimulation of the entire thing with just the lineart if that makes sense? Like, Instead of depending entirely on shadows to thicken lines, areas that need "highlighting" (or more attention/contrast against certain parts) on the lineart are thickened instead and make use of how you do your speed and thicken random areas where you do it somewhat slow even if you aren't planning to thicken them up to give out the overall flow. I'm not sure if this'll be much help but I hope it does??? It's just a theory though so I don't expect much from myself. If I'm wrong welp that's me XD

I agree, when I was in high school my art teacher was just like "Your wine bottle needs reflection and a curve" *hands paper sending you off to do it without telling you how to approach it* But then all my art teachers was up their own butts as They favored the already talented kids at still art and ignored everyone who either did different art styles or never drew and discouraged them from continuing because it was "not real art" in their eyes and passively bullied them which no one picked up on. I get so annoyed with art teachers sometimes, often it's like they are willfully lagging behind in certain aspects. For example, a lot of really popular and well liked artists right now do have super clean digital looking lines, but many art teachers are dead set on digital art feeling and looking more like traditional art.

Eh personally I think knowing how to draw both super clean lineart, as well as lineart with a lot of weight is good for future projects that are probably going to be a bit different every time. The thing with most popular online artist is that while they may mostly display their art with a super cartoony, and clean lineart style, many can most likely draw in other styles as well, many do know anatomy, how to shade in different styles, paint with different mediums etc because if they went to an art school that's what they will teach you, or should teach you. But the popular online artist choose to use the cartoon, clean lineart style because that's what is getting the most attention to their account. Knowing many different types of styles is good for future job aspects, and sticking to only one, even if it's popular, can be the very thing standing in your way and possibly even make you feel like you've stopped developing your art skills. I don't know how dead set your teachers are, but maybe they're trying to make their students, many who are probably already drawing with clean lineart to not stick with it too much, to not get too dependent on it because maybe in the future they will get a project or a commission they will find they are not skilled enough on yet just because they stuck with one art style only. Speaking from personal experience, I used to only draw with clean lineart, but it wasn't until I started to experiment with drawing without lineart and use a more painterly style that I actually started on improve on things such as value, composition and backgrounds. Now I can add on what I learnt from painting that is more traditional AND use clean lineart. Also consider there are many online artist who are also really popular but do not draw with clean lineart, if any lineart at all. So non clean lineart is definitely not dated nor non modern. Not everyone becomes a popular online artist, or successfully manages to make a living by selling commissions online, in fact it's incredibly hard and unstable job because who knows, maybe in 10 or 20 years cartoons won't be the big thing, maybe it's low brow art or a new style of art. It's safer to reach for the companies that create movies, games, cars, any that are looking for designers, background artists, SFX artists, animators, etc. And they are going to look for the artsist that can show they have experience with different mediums and style regardless if it's popular or not. And artists that can show that they do know how to adapt to something new or old.

At 5:02, what I find helpful to do (If you are doing your artwork digitally) is to paint the character in one color, and if you are able to see the pose of your character and what they're doing, just with their silhouette, that should be a sign that it's a job well done. Obviously, this doesen't apply to everything, but I hope this helps!

I once drew George Washington in a cat maid costume flirting with a horse for five bucks. I later drew him and the horse at their wedding (with Georgie in the bridal dress of course, and the horse in a full on tuxedo) for six bucks. I showed both to my art class, and my teacher loved it. This is really solid advice! Especially handy because I often feel like mistakes are pointed out in such a way you're not encouraged to think more deeply about WHY something isn't working. This was so helpful-- I've gotten some of those critiques before, but didn't really understand *why* they were bad. Tangents is something I especially struggle with, I can notice them but I can never figure out how to fix them. I would 100% have to agree with having dynamic poses because I used to draw my characters in a very confined space feeling as if they were stuck in a very thin wall. And the other tip that always helps many people was having a layer over your color that was completely black so that way you could check to see where the silhouette was missing some dynamic parts. Like the legs were super expressive but the arms were kind of missing a mark being too tight and it looked to similar to other characters. Great video! I'm almost a high-school student so this is very helpful!💖💖💖
