I remember one thing that bothered me about books like this (as a self-taught artist) is how they assume amateur artists need the drawings themselves to be simplified to match their skill-level. There were ones that were Too detailed (that classic joke where they show a circle and then say "and then draw the rest of the owl" or what have you) but overly simplified art for amateurs actually bothered me bc it felt like the artist was basically drawing down to me, sort of like talking down to, when I could fully understand the art I just needed help with the shape language and stuff. My favorite books like this as a kid were Ben Caldwell's action and fantasy cartooning books. I gave them to another artist so they could use them but I miss them just for how good the art was.

Me too! Her channel isn't that hard to find imo. She has worldwide fans of her art. Her parents are very supportive iirc. Similar to mine in a way; once they surprised me by posting a picture of my fan art of a video game character! I didn't really think of posting it at the moment becsuse it showed the character crying while in the anime it's usually confident. It kinda breaks character if you get what I mean. But it received so many views online! I'm really glad of my parents and my community. They really helped me grow and supported me throughout my entire journey. Love from Philippines!

I have one of these books and looking at them, he has drastically improved in the one I have. His art is a lot cleaner and fixes a lot of the problems you had with this one. (My problems with mine being it’s kinda sexist, but that’s to be expected with anime, and also the one black character is a girl in a tribe that’s being sacrificed to the gods.)

I'm so glad to see that someone else's drawing journey started with Christopher Hart! I had the Manga Shojo how-to book by him.

Finaly some words of the truth! I've watched many creators who were always starting with a head, followed them and ending up with unproportional and wierd head. When i started with body for the first time it was a blessing. THE PROPORTIONS WERE AS THEY ALWAYS SHOULD BE.

My art journey has basically just been a whole lot of inspiration from things I watched. Like I was super into Powerpuff Girls when I was 9, so my art style was very similar to that. I started watching this channel in 2018 or so which also heavily inspired my style. Nowadays, most of my inspiration comes from anime whose art styles I really like

I think the biggest how to draw book that I used was how to draw dragons by Walter Foster. Definitely had an influence on what I drew as a kid!

honestly, I used to have a few of these books when I was very you and they made my art much much worse than just practicing with references. I see the nostalgic point of view but personally, they weren't much of a help 😅

I love these videos!! I got a Christopher Hart "How To Draw Anime" book from my aunt when I was 10, and at the time I wasn't very good at drawing but I was good at observing and noticing things, so I would go through and nitpick the artwork like the little jerk I was. Those were the good old days.

A lot of my friends used drawing guidebooks in elementary school, i think i was very enthusiastic about them but didn't get around to using them much. I learned from a combination of middle school & elementary school art class, weekend art classes for kids at a local college, and my own trial and error

When I was in elementary school my grandma gave me a book on how to draw animals that was realised in 1961. I guess it belonged to my aunt, when she was a child. I loved that book and still have it on my shelf. The drawings look very 60ies, but are easy to replicate for children and the steps are written in rhymes. Later I got mostly books on how to draw dragons and other fantasy creatures, but pretty quickly started figuring out how to draw stuff from looking at finished drawings.

You taught me a lot about glasses. I have an oc with glasses and I always struggle to draw them on. Knowing it's ok to overlap is very nice. qwq

This is probably the most informative video I've seen from you! I've been in a 20 year art rut, because I've been starting with the head (staring directly at the viewer, ofc) and then 'cascading' the rest of the body from there -- starting the arms at the shoulders and 'cascading' down to an arbitrarily-placed hand, etc. Usually I just watch these videos to admire your creativity, but this was an information gold mine. You just rattled off advice for _every_ art habit that's been holding me back. Also, it's good to see that Christopher Hart is getting _somewhat_ better at drawing anime. Some of those characters on the cover actually look legit!

I have always loved drawing ever since I was basically a toddler and I knew I wanted to draw but I first consciously thought about it after seeing the anime style I started with a bunch of drawing books from Lee Hammond which were mostly those grid-based drawing tutorials where they copied a reference. But, I am grateful because they really taught me shading, blending, and about light sources and stuff like shinier objects have sharper highlights, etc.

i taught myself how to draw for a long time, but when i found youtube i watched a bunch of tutorials on how to draw things. after a while i stopped and mainly just went back to teaching myself and then eventually started using references in middle school. now i’m in highschool and i’m really happy with how my art is progressing, it still has a long way to go, but you especially have helped me and helped to inspire me to draw and i incorporate some of your style too (the little scratchy cheeks and noses) and i thank you for being such an awesome and inspiring person :)

I've read some of Christopher Hart's drawing books. Some of the things were helpful, but a lot of it came across as rushed, as well as rather strange. I ended up watching youtube artists tutorials and time lapse videos, as well as diving into art classes with local artists who had a passion for teaching. I have a decent collection of drawing books which I poured over for years, and I still reference them from time to time. I also found that studying photo-realism helped me a ton with building my foundations as an artist. Thank you for sharing some of your nostalgia with us! You have such a cute art style!

what started me on drawing (and i mean literally this moment. one day i couldnt care less abt doing art, the next i was determined to become a world class artist) is one night at a sleepover when i was 12/13. we were out of ideas for what to do, and my friend suggested a drawing contest. i wasnt thrilled abt it but i went along to make her happy. we started drawingg, and i decided to go out of my comfort zone and do some humans, and i ended up having more fun than id ever had with art. the challenge of drawing something i never was good at and the pride and satisfaction of figuring it out just a little more made me fall in love with art, and i havent stopped since :)

i really liked how you took a drawing and explained how to make it better show a particular action like the water jug spilled on the floor, that really interesting and helpful.
