***** Nope. It's important never to think bigotry and racism are long gone because they are not. When you stop acknowledging it, that's when you stop working on it, and we, as LGBT people and their allies, and other minorities, cannot afford to stop working.

I personally think she is beautiful. Not that it matters or is important compared to the truth that she is happy and confident and inspiring, but she is beautiful. When it comes to looks, I've always admired women who actually have broad shoulders and toned muscles. There is a certain fierceness to her look.

***** I know I'm commenting on something that's seven months old, so I apologize for that, but I suppose that's one way Laverne is lucky she has male genetics (and I'm sure, through all her heartbreak, there are many reasons that's a true statement). As a bisexual male, I'm not generally attracted to trans women, as many of them fall into the "uncanny valley," where they end up not looking like either gender, but I suppose Laverne is helping change my view on that. I need to be careful that doesn't turn me into an oppressor like she was discussing, but I suppose no one can be faulted for what does it for them sexually. I agree though, aesthetically, she's gorgeous.

My favorite part is where she talks about us all being oppressors and liberators, sometimes we can be both without realizing what we're doing. If we stay aware and thoughtful of our words and actions we can be the liberators for ourselves and for each other. Imagine if we did that for everyone, how much better our world would be. All people are beautiful, important and powerful, and should be embraced and our differences celebrated. They're what make life interesting and beautiful! :-)

Thank you for reminding the entire community and allies that we the oppressed are sometimes also oppressors. This could not be more appropriate for the time, as we see the gay community show so much intense transphobia surround the RuPaul's Drag Race controversy. Thank you Laverne Cox.

Many transgender people are homophobic. Did you forget that most of them are heterosexuals and are part of the heterosexist, heteronormative, and heterosexual supremacy agenda?
@mynniquinn4599
@mynniquinn4599 10 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you get that stereotype from, mine is the general gay audience excluding the activists, yours seems more true from the pre 21st century trans person. Most trans people these days understand that gender is complex and so is sexual orientation.
@amyglass9897
@amyglass9897 10 жыл бұрын
***** Of course, deny deny deny. It doesn't matter what you personally want to believe but transgender people refuse to take responsibility for their homophobia. They have heterosexual privilege and marriage rights that gay people could only hope to get in their dreams in many states. Trans women will claim that gay and lesbian and bisexual people leave them behind and they would ask the LGB community to give up protections (example with the Employment Nondiscrimination Act) because it doesn't include trans protections yet Heterosexual Trans people do NOT give up THEIR heterosexual privilege and right to marry until all gay, lesbian, and bisexual people are able to marry in every state. How Hypocritical! Many radical and militant trans activists are also very bigoted and hateful towards drag queens and cis men in general. They think that they should be the only ones born with male genitalia who should have the right to wear dresses and make-up. If they have their way, drag would become illegal. You don't hear the same fundamentalism and radicalism coming from Trans men. Trans men do not go around telling cis women that they don't have a right to wear pants and suits and ties or that cis women having masculine presentations makes them (trans men) look bad or look like "women in men's clothes." Trans women constantly bitch about how the mere existence of drag queens or men who cross dress makes them (trans women) look like men in dresses. As if cisgender men are supposed to forfeit their right and freedom to wear dresses, skirts, and make-up at the behest of trans women. How egotistical!!!
@mynniquinn4599
@mynniquinn4599 10 жыл бұрын
I understand where you are coming from, but I thought you need to be a bit more cautious about the way you say it. I identify as a trans-feminine agender, so I see a lot of what you say displayed by some trans folk. but they don't represent the majority of trans people. A lot of the exclusionary trans peopel you are talking about sort of did it as a response to TERFs and gay cisgender men labeling them as drag queens. Now I do not think it is appropriate to bite back with negativity, but that exists on both sides, cisgender and transgender. By the way cis privilege supercedes any other privilege at this point, so that remark on heterosexual trans people doesn't really apply. I also know a lot of cisgender allies in the LGB community who support trans people without such transphobia, but the transphobia does exist in a much larger and marginalizing scale than the homophobia in the trans community (the homophobia is usually just a - that is not us - sort of deal with I agree with you is very bad). In fact, trans women perform with a lot of drag queens all the time, they refer to themselves as showgirls, but it is still a very close community in some aspects. The problem we have is with new generations that try to distance themselves from each other, like the new gay generation who don't understand the history of trans oppression, and importance of inclusion.
@amyglass9897
@amyglass9897 10 жыл бұрын
Denise Hampshire"They" don't suffer more than LGB people do. The divide in the LGBT community in terms of most to least oppressed and stigmatized is not in terms of LG vs. BT or LGB vs. T. The real divide is between all those in the LGBT community born as male versus all those born as female. The ones born as female (cis-gender lesbians, cis-gender bisexual women, and trans men) are the least oppressed, stigmatized, and the least likely to face homophobic/transphobic physical violence. Gay men, bisexual men, and trans women, on the other hand, all of whom were born male by the way, face the most amount of resistance, backlash, and violence. Claiming that transgender PEOPLE suffer more than LGB people is ridiculous given that trans men hardly face any violence and negative rhetoric compared to Gay and Bisexual men. There are over 40 countries where only male homosexuality is criminalized. Gay men- not transgender female-to males- are the ones being arrested, imprisoned, mob-attacked and slaughtered for being gay or for being attracted to the same-sex in addition to the opposite sex in the case of bisexual men. The violence faced by the transgender "community" is actually almost exclusively experienced by transgender WOMEN only- not by trans men. Bisexual MEN receive far less acceptance than bisexual women.

Laverne is awesome. First saw her on Law & Order SVU! She was running a gym and I thought she did really well even though she had a small part on that episode. This is awesome for GLAAD to honor her as a Transgender Woman of Color. Don't forget the color! I don't think blacks, Mexicans and Asians are represented enough in the LGBT community and the media and if they are it's usually in a negative light. I don't know why that is, but it seems like things are slowly changing. I love Laverne and we need more people like her and more gay people that can be role models and educate my generation as well as the kids coming up and older people! Go Laverne!

A couple of years I had the pleasure of working with a transwoman. We all wondered but no one ever asked but she was very friendly and cool so that made me open my eyes more. I guess you can say I'm more accepting. But I can't honestly say that if my child ever thought of gender reassignment I'd support it. This is always gonna be a touchy subject it's definitely gonna be hard struggle, but I'll never disrespect anyone. I'll never make anyone feel bad about the choice they made. I guess you can say I'm cool with it, I just don't fully support it. But the transwoman I worked with she was nice and she had a man. So I had bad words about other folks were jerks but I can honestly say that I was cool with her. But live on love life. Gotta always make it work for you.
