I really hate people who judge gymnasts who cry even when not hurt. It doesn't matter. The falls are SCARY. That's valid enough. No one could possibly ever know if they weren't a gymnast. Your life literally flashes before your eyes and it's even scarier when you're falling on your neck or you're falling and can't stop yourself.

You know, from her first giant on the high bar when she stops in rotation at the top of the bar - she has a quick moment where it looks like she is about to let go of her form and then straightens her arms back up and carries on - I felt like that was a big tell of what’s to come, like she did not have the strength to pull off the whole routine. So when she transitioned to the low bar ; all her moves looked clean (her body was always straight and her toes were pointed), but I thought there was NO WAY she was making it back up to the high bar. There’s NO POWER left in that body ! I guess she had enough to get that one last push back to the high bar but that was that. 😢 All that hard work getting ready for this competition to have it end like that 😮 I hope she isn’t injured bad❤

2 giants before the last, she has some sort of tap, but the one prior, she comes down with none. Is that normal? There was nothing the coach could have done, but his body language on the dismount tells me that she has had issues with the dismount before. I don't like crashes, and when she got through the set, I though, great, it's on the dismount. Women recover from crashes, when guys wouldn't (due to weight and flexibility). I wonder if this makes for a greater acceptance of risk with women. Beam is the worst, where the gymnast will land on her head, get up and walk away with a coach; whereas, a coach would tell a guy to stay down, until help arrives.

This kind of stuff is so scary. I worked as a RN for 20 years, much of that with patients with various neurological injuries. One young woman had been in a car wreck, and thought nothing was wrong. Her neck was sore, but nothing major. But it kept up. She got it x-rayed about 2 weeks later, and had what is called a "C-1-2 rotary subluxation", where the very top vertebrae are twisted AND moved horizontally. A sneeze could have killed her, or left her a vent dependent quadriplegic. She was in a special immobilization bed for over a month before it was safe to stabilize her surgically. Nothing is worth that. It's understandable that any athlete wants to advance, but it must be done carefully.

How much do these young gymnastics have to be pushed? Always expected to do more and better than previous generations of gymnastics. It's scary to watch gymnastics with bandages wrapped around their wrists and ankles. I knew a woman in her early 40s at the time, who had serious back pain because when she was a teenager and young adult, she was a gymnast. And all the training and competition did serious damage to her back and neck. I hope this young girl learns to just enjoy the sport and have fun, without pushing herself with intense training and competition. Gymnastics needs to be more like dance, and just be fun.

What I never understand is how parents see something like this and let their child go back to the gym. Like, seriously, as a parent, you know there is life after gymnastics. If you saw your son or daughter very nearly end up in a wheelchair for life, how could you just brush that off and let them go back to doing the activity that almost took everything from them? (Also, note to self, find a way to get youtube to stop recommending gymnastics to me, I regularly feel so guilty to be supporting this sport when it leads to so many injuries, so many live with pain from HS age on)
