Just an update from me. I just bought a6300 a week ago and I was playing around in the past few days with rack focus in video, 4K 24pfs and I was able to rack focus with no problem. I tried it with two Sony e mount lenses. their 50 mm f/1.8 OSS and their Macro 30mm f/3.5. Latest firmware on the camera. I used peak focus indicator for easier way to know what is in focus and it works perfectly. For testing I used bunch of objects like fruits stacked next to each other on the table and tried to go from first one to last one and back. In most cases focus peaking indicator was a great help so I can see what is in focus and what is not. In few cases it was not able to show the peak focus, I imagine it was because the fruits were so similar to one another in that angle and it had a hard time finding edges to detect so I had to do it manually and no problem. Additionally I used Plastic Zip Cable Ties as DIY follow focus helper and I was able to mark with the marker focus points on it and that helped. It also was less shaky because I didn't touch the lens directly to focus. Anyway, I hope it helps I love you videos BTW. Great info. Thanks.

You are saying you were able to do follow focus on a dolly move ? i thought because its fly by wire you cannot manual focus precisly as it works on the velocity

Not sure what you are asking but you can lock focus manually if the subject does not move. I tried with dolly moves and it works. You can also use wireless focus puller if you really want to go full production, and someone else follows focus while you shoot dolly. Otherwise if the move is not too wild you could do it yourself. Especially with cine lenses. If its something with good contrast or human face, it is really good at following automatically, and you can also lock on focus if you have enough contrast. On a cup of tea that someone is drinking or car moving or something like that. Low light auto focus has some issues in video, in photo is better. But I guess that is to be expected. Last night it was full moon and I tried to autofoucus black cat in the dark lit only by moonlight, no luck, but as soon as it moved next to a bright wall even in moonlight only, it was able to lock on. Just little contrast and works.

I was at Professional Imaging 2016 (Nijkerk, The Netherlands) where I got to test the 30mm f/1.4 for a couple of shots. I don't have Photoshop to check the profile, but in Lightroom the lens is called E 30mm F1.4 and the applied builtin profile is called the same. It's also saying it's only been applied on the colors? The selected model however is the DC DN C016 and the profile is for Sony.

I use a Sigma 19mm on micro 4/3 and the distortion and CA are not correected . Don't forget that with LR , micro 4/3 works with precorrected raws. You will never see a non corrected image in LR from your Panansonic and Olympus lenses . By the way, they actually produce a lot.of distortion. So for Sigma lenses on micro 4/3 you have to proceed manualy.

This video was of pretty good help in knowing what I had to look out for. Tested one before buying and that one might just be the golden nugget as it had none of the issues shown in the video and runs on the latest firmware for the E-Mount system. Thanks to you and some folks in the comments, I was able to properly test this out before paying for it.

This lens is phenomenal. The problems as long they are known beforehand and avoided with a hood lens or proper settings aren't serious. For 350$ I bought the same quality of many Sony full frame FE e-mount lenses on full frame a7 bodies. I hope sigma and Sony will fix some firmware problems. Nevertheless I recommend this lens for new buyers of APS-C e-mount cameras. Sigma CEO recently announced new sigma FE full frame e-mount lenses. So Sony a7 series or a9 you can expect big things with low prices.

the manual focus is sigma issue i am using it on sony a6000 its annoying. i tried the manual focus on sigma 60mm f2.8 no issues at all. i wouldn't recommend it for video because sometimes the auto focus is loud. but overall the lens is worth it at this price range. thank you for the update.

Aww. I've used this lens for about a month now. I haven't had any problems with it yet. I'm just an amateur taking photos for fun, but I really dislike the chromatic aberrations. They're a pain to edit in Lightroom.

I guess you have had problems then. You might have the issue he mentioned regarding the firmware, because the lens profile should correct both barrel distortion AND chromatic aberration.

I recently bought this lens and encounter the lens profile issue. It says “E 30” when I apply lens correction in LR it doesn’t know which profile to use automatically like most lens. I have to manually select sigma and then LR recognizes the lens and completes the rest of the profiling. Not an issue really since I shoot raw, but just an extra step in the process

If you turn the lens to quick then it over focuses and if you turn to slow then it takes extra turning.

I really think, wes might be right. As far as I can tell from the videos, the focussing is only by wire, so Sony actually advertises that you when moving the focus ring slower you can focus more accurately. In practivce it is like mouse acceleration, where it just messes up muscle memory and makes it totally useless. ^^

uh oh. I just bought the lens for my Sony A6500. I am not totally sure how to test this . I am a newbie. I put the camera setting on "A" at f2 and took some pictures. They seem to look good even zoomed in on Lightroom. I tried the manual focus. Yes, I get it to clear focus out then back in both directions and find it wacks out a bit but thankfully I can get it in focus again. Then I opened up lightroom 6 again and looked for the profile. I have MUCH to learn in using Lightroom. On a RAW picture I see under lens correction Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN C016, Sony E. I hope all is well. I have noticed the lens inside moving back and forth some on focusing. Again, I am a newbie and quite simple on the camera, lens and Lightroom.

Yes you have the current profile. The problem at f2 shows up when af is set to af-s or contrast focus. It should be fine on af-c.

i have search on internet and have see no one with this problem. on Sony a6000 this lenses sometimes the F stop info in camera disappear. That it true, instead of show F1.4 ou f4.5 for example, it show F./.. , and you can't change that or focus, it's shooting, or film and sometimes do this, and it's getting worst. i have to turn off an on the sony a6000 to see the F stop again: Do anyone have this problem ?

I really need guidance. I have an a6000 and idk if i want the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or Sony 35mm f/1.8 or Sony 28mm f/2. The only thing stopping me from getting the sigma is the size and the ca. Everyone says though that 30mm is much better than 35mm for every day use though. I'm so stuck. I like the low f stop but will i really notice a difference between f/1.4-f/2?

Not really. But the Sigma does focus closer than both. Out of all of the Sigmas I have tried (6) only one had noticeable CAs.

if you have the a6000 which doesnt have the 5 axis image stabilization built in then the Sony 35mm f1.8 with OSS will be better to prevent blurry photos. If you have a 6300 or 6500 with IBIS built in then you can get good stable non blurry photos. I use my 35m f1.8 all the time (along with the 50 f1.8) on my a6000 and NEX-7 cameras

I think it must be an element alignment issue. I have a Zeiss 50mm Planar T manual focus lens that has an f2 issue too. So I imagine it can happen on any lens.

I just watched again your video . What is the issue with correction profile LR named E 30mm 1.4 ? What is your point? it is clear that a micro 4/3 version will be corrected differently than a E mount version . The distortion is higher .

If you are into m43 then it works fine. On Sony e there are two different versions. One the corrects both vignetting and distortion and one that just corrects vignetting. The main issue on Sony is if you use contrast detection for af then it hunts at f2 and doesn't focus correctly. Again not an issue on m43.

I just updated the firmware on my SIGMA 30mm F1.4 DC DN (Sony E Mount) and the lens started having issues with the AF hunting too much. I'm using my old and cheap Sony A3000 and the lens doesn't do well after the firmware upgrade. Please tell me how to downgrade and revert back to the original (old) firmware.

I can but its an easy test. Just put the camera on a tripod and on aperture priority in day light with af on af-s and on f2 the af should bounce at infinity and focus on something closer. I shoot on af-c so I never have this issue.

Ok I tested that and it seemed to bounce and focus on something closer on AF-S. If I switch to manual focus and go to infinity at f2 nothing is in focus. I am in a city though so it may just be because nothing visible in frame is far enough away and the DOF is so shallow at f2. That issue isn't what you're describing though correct? Also, I investigated the firmware reading and mine shows up as the E 30mm 1.4. I'm shooting on a6000 and was thinking it might be listed as E because of e-mount. Not sure why they would have two different lens correction firmware versions with one leaving out the barrel distortion. Have you tried switching the lenses between bodies to see if the cameras are maybe applying additional corrections to the raw files?

Yep that is the f2 issue. Just shoot on af-c and it will work fine. Yes Iv'e tried swapping bodies and it's definitely the lens. Seems like the E 30 version doesn't correct for barrel distortion.

The f2 issue is just bizarre but there are enough of these lenses out now that I think it would be fixed. There is a way around it. Shoot on af-c instead of af-s. e-30 just means it's a different firmware and it's not correcting the barrel distortion.

Thank you sir. I've just got my Sigma 30/1.4C but found that whatever auto exposure you have, it never changes when you pop up the built in flash so I always get wrong exposure shots with flash. With native 50/1.8 my a6000 used to re-adjust the settings to fit perfect shots with flash. Can this be solved?

Hi, thanks for this video. I've got the 30mm and I'm trying to understand the infinity focus problem at f2.0. If I set my focus to infinity and start at the smallest aperture, everything is sharp as expected, but as I open the aperture up less and less is in focus with each stop, until at f2.0 everything is completely blurred. Is it not just focusing at some miniscule point, far in the distance, throwing everything else out of focus at such a wide aperture?

It only happens with the af set to af-s or constrast detection and only at f2, and apprently only when you are looking at the back of the screen instead of through the view finder.. in af-c it seems to focus ok. This isn't the first lens I've heard of doing this though. I do think it's a Sony issue.

has anyone had an issue with the aperture? my aperture would be stuck and i couldnt change it. on my a6000 i would change the aperture in manual mode and it would say the lens is at a certain aperture but the blades would not move. if i were to take the lens off and put it back on it would go to a different aperture but still would be stuck. i looked everywhere for "sigma 30 1.4 aperture issue" but could not find anyone with the same problem. Of course, i have sent back the lens to the retailer but i am still curious. i want to buy the lens again in hopes of getting a good copy. Also is there any other lenses similar to this one? i looked at the sony 35 1.8 but im not too interested. I want to find a lens under $500 with auto and manual focus and a very low aperture. The only way to cope with blurred pics (f/2.0, AF-S) is turn off EVF. Using LCD screen we will achieve pics sharp as razor in this condition.

Shoot a brick wall and look at the raw file. If it looks good then you fine but if it has barrel distortion like a slight fisheye affect then you will have to manually correct it.

I owned this lens for 8 months. In the first wedding I was really happy - it was sharp at 1.4 and had nice bokeh. In the second wedding started small problems with focusing speed but nothing special, still nice pictures. Then I did outdoor portrait shooting and 95% of the images on 1.4 and 2.0 were completely out of focus. Pictures were not "unsharp", but out of focus. On the third wedding lens was focusing very slow, still hunting and not able to focus. On the fourth wedding lens was not able to focus in AF-S. I hand to switch to AF-C, Wide and face detection on. It was the only way how to focus quickly without hunting. Yesterday I sold the lens to a guy who will travel with it to Nepal so I hope he will throw it from some high hill somewhere really deep to the stones and the lens will be definitely dead and not able to take bad pictures anymore. Now I have Zeiss 24/1.8 and I am really happy with focusing speed and focusing precision.

A number of commentators here are bashing Sigma's quality control. However, based on reputable review sites and the link at the bottom, Sigma is known for well centered lenses. Further, anecdotally, I am very happy with the two Sigma lenses that I own. Perhaps, Sigma needs to increase the breadth of their QC tests, so that focussing, and other, problems are reduced. Blurry at f2.2, very at f2.5, f2.8, so I ask to replace my copy and today in Stavanger Norway at Japan Photo Store they replace my sigma 16mm copy with new copy and they tested with my a6500 and the blurry portrait pictures at f2.5 and f2.8 is remain, however the staff at the store tested the new copy with a6300 and a6000 and the blurry at f2.5 f2.8 is still remain the same. So what is going on to sigma copies three cameras my a6500 and two cameras from the store one is a6300 and the other a6000 and we get very blurry portrait pictures on AF-S.

I wish Sigma would fix it but on Sony just use AF-C. It's better af anyway.

Lavikka Photography I will give it another shot and go back to store to try AF-C and switch the PAL system to NTSC system just the same as USA and see.

Sigma is notorious for lens failure for decades. That's why I would never buy a Sigma lens. Cheap in the short term, long term a waste of money.

Yes I know. I have severe allergies to ragweed, lambs quarter and ash trees which is all around me. I started using Alcon drops before filming.

Sigma is just crap. I guess pro photographers that know what to look for will return until they get a good copy (however a major hassle). The rest will most likely keep their inferior lens. Sigma lenses are expensive considering they most likely don't use a dime on quality assurance.
