In Poland, the First Communion has turned into an ever more elaborate and expensive event. Despite inflation, some celebrations are almost as extravagant as a wedding. In the city of Łódź, Wiktoria's family has rented a fairytale castle, complete with a four-course meal and a children's entertainer. On the other hand, the family of ten-year-old Wiktor in the rural province of Holy Cross still celebrates rather traditionally - with plenty of meat, vodka, accordion music, and singing.

Nice documentary. I had my communion 20 years ago. The party was in the flat we were living in. Nothing fancy. It's about celebrating live, that we can see each other. Talk with the family. Everyone can celebrate how they want. You should seen weddings, communion x100. Some want to show how much they have, some want to be social. Most wants both in good proportions.

You're showing two opposing sides, but in reality 95% of people are somewhat in between. It's celebrated more than birthday, but definitely less than wedding. Poland is generally a catholic state, so people attend such celebrations even if not very religious, as it's more the matter of tradition. Naturally, everything changes and now it's less an obligation, more a decision. Children are the same age and when I was taking my First Communion it would be percieved unusual not to participate, especially ouside major cities.

I had my first Communion in 1987. Back then 90% of people celebrated that day by organizing parties at home. Family dinner, gifts which were not so expensive and fancy as they are today.

Problem with this that almost nobody really cares about holy sacrament which happens during first communion. Children think only about gifts they should receive and their parents and guest think mostly about partying and alcohol. There is no room for Jesus Christ in those ceremonies.

Of course there religious people who understand what first communion really is, but mostly people don't really care about religious aspects of this ceremony. Kiedy ja przyjmowałem I komunię w latach 90, kapłan chodził wzdłuż głównej nawy i udzielał komunii na klęcząco w asyście ministranta z pateną. Dziś w tej samej parafii ludzie ustawiają się w kolejce i dostają komunię do łapki. Spodziewam się, że za kolejne 25 lat w tej samej parafii będzie już jakiś pub jak w Holandii.

From my perspective (2005) I have sth between both options presented in this movie. Despite that I didn't understand everything that time I felt that spirit and make me so happy. The priest was enough good and nice- He loved speaking a lot of stories that make Bible more interesting- that way the next year I become an Altar Service boy that I'm... up today❤. About party: I was shocked that I saw big family meeting in an Open Air Heritage Museum (Skansen) rented local- for time after celebration doesn't exist. For present I gain both religious (Bilble Geographical Atlas and Album Photos from St. JPII's pontificate with a beautiful dedication) and not-religions (camera, binoculars). Thanks Arte for that movie. Please remembered that after Sunday celebration, appears "White Week" during which kid participate every day in a holy mass which mostly (but not every) finish with pilgrim to the nearst sanctuary (Such as Jasna Góra oraz Holy Cross... in Holy Cross Region) and/or beautiful presentation during Corpus Christi Holiday!❤

Despite my lack of doubt that this celebration is viewed as a beautiful occasion by many, my recollections of it indicate, that it was always a highly materialistic affair. Even during my early age, kids at school often talked about what they got for First Communion, so many were being called "worse ones" because their gifts weren't as cool. Furthermore, I deeply regret that I was not given the opportunity to choose whether or not I would undergo it. As well...an adult me would definitely said "no".

It's a beautiful tradition. Unfortunately nowadays people care more about extremely expensive presents than about the religion aspect. I think only small gifts should be given to kids during this special day. Also, nowadays only half of Poland is catholic, the rest is usually atheist or something between catholic and atheist :p

Hallo, warum denkst Du deine Traditionen werden herabschauend behandelt? Ich als Deutsche war sehr berührt von euren Traditionen und dem Zusammenhalt. Leider muss man sagen, dass bei der Kommunion für die Kinder der eigentlich Sinn verloren geht, wenn man eine Party daraus macht. Aber das ist meine Meinung, ihr macht das schon richtig. Liebe Grüße

@@Anneliese210 Dein Kommentar bestätigt nur das, was ich behaupte. Glaube heißt in Polen Gemeinschaft schaffen, Gemeinsame Erlebnisse, Ziele und damit Gemeinsame Werte. Das eben passiert dort in einer perfekten weise. Was Du mit dem "verlorenen Sinn" meinst, ist für mich rätselhaft.

@@MaximVani Ja, die Gemeinschaft ist verloren, der häufig auch vom Glauben gestärkt wird. Jeder in meinem Land glaubt an was anderes und hat eine andere Ideologie. Mit "Sinn verloren" meinte ich die Art wie die Kommunion gefeiert wird. Im Mittelpunkt der Kommunion steht das Bündnis und die Bekenntnis zu Gott. Es wirkt mehr wie eine Geburtstagsfeier und das Kind wird eventuell dann den Sinn der Kommunion nicht mehr verstehen. Aber das ist keine ernste Kritik, der Gedanke kam mir nur so. Natürlich kann ich nicht in eure Köpfe gucken.

What I remeber from my first communion is: how I cried after my first confession as I didn't want to do it, I was frightened and pressured by the adults. When the priest asked about my 'chastity' (I was 8 YEARS OLD) I didn't understand what he was talking about. I was forced to listen to a stranger telling me I have to obey my abusive mother. Former Polish Catholic here, a self-described atheist. Had “my” First Communion in mid-90's, and it’s incredible how much time I was forced to devote to this ritual. In the end all I got was a lousy Satellite Dish (that part was delivered by the God of the Free-Market Economy). The smells & the sounds of church still hold immense power over my senses, and retrigger a lot of memories of religious servitude even in my late 30's. Wish that time was spent on more pragmatic, down-to-earth hobbies.

The „confession” is a disgusting custom. If you’ve done wrong, one should deal with it in life, and not tell some shady men in black. Crazy. LOL. The kids don´t have a single fainted clue about what is happening and about the nature of this whole thing. How could they? It´s just another game. 7 out of 10 will probably drop formal religion completely before they reach 25. I understand that the parents want to help their children to develop a spiritual life, and in that sense, it´s not crazy at all. But in many ways that is not their call, definitely not when you are 7 or so. Those kids will make their own choices regarding spirituality like every human being in the history of humankind. LET THEM GROW.

What kind of logic is that? IT IS the parents call, ESPECIALLY at age 7. Thats literally the whole point of parenthood, to make decisions for there children when they are too young to do it them selves. Thry are letting them grow, this literally is part of the growing process. If they abandon there faith in adulthood thats on them, but the parents did there duty.
