Re: cougars -- The (American) football team at the University of Houston are called the Cougars. From the late 1940's to around 1990, they had a live cougar that lived on the campus that would come to the games. There was a special group of students trained to handle it that took care of it and escorted it everywhere. It even stayed in hotel rooms when the team traveled out of town. There are people who try to keep cougars as pets, but usually end up surrendering to an animal rescue group when it gets full-size.

The Channel Islands Fox probably swam there thousands of years ago, when sea levels were lower, several of the islands were actually connected with a much larger landmass. While never connected to mainland California, it was a much smaller swim to reach the island mass than it is today. The Channel Islands landmass actually supported a pygmy mammoth species, with oral accounts of Native Americans hunting them! (Pygmy is a term for a species that has insular dwarfism, named after a tribe in the Congo which has most of its people of shorter stature)

Well since I almost always like recommending nature related videos I might as as well chip in with a few tidbits of information that I think are important (and also recommend a video). 6:42: "Pygmy" usually refers to something that is smaller than other comparable animals, so a "Pygmy Rattlesnake" is a rattlesnake that is far smaller than other rattlesnakes. 11:08: The presenter of this video said Insectivore, not Insect, it refers to an animal that predominantly and often specializes in eating insects, not that it is insect. 18:27: The California Condor is bald because it is a type of New World Vulture and many vultures often lack head feathers because they stick their heads into nasty corpses for a living. 21:31: Its funny you mention that because for me personally Snapping Turtles are the sole reason I don't think I've ever thought of turtles as "cute creatures that do their own thing" and instead just have a neutral stance of them maybe being predators or not. In fairness Snapping Turtles are pretty weird, if you want to learn more about turtles I highly recommend the video "All 14 Families of Turtles & How They Are Related" from Clint's Reptiles.

The California condor was brought back from the brink of extinction thanks to the California Condor Recovery Program. From 22 individuals in 1987, we now have over 300 wild condors living in California, Southern Utah, and Northern Arizona. These condors are remarkable and resilient creatures, and we are so fortunate to still have them in our world. The California condor should have been #1 on this list.

You should watch the Coyote Peterson video with an alligator snapping turtle. He wrapped up his forearm with all kind of protection and still felt it. They *LOVE* to snap, and they'll happily take a finger or toe if you're not careful. So don't walk in a swamp if you can't see the bottom, for many reasons. And if you have to hold a snapping turtle, pick it up by the tail and then by the back part of their carapace because they have surprisingly long necks! Better yet, watch the video and give snapping turtles a miss.

There are, re. cats besides cougars, bobcats, lynx, to name a few. Re. #1, I live in northern IL, and I've seen chipmunks here, so it's not just the SW where they're found. The sage grouse's white chest things are what the males use during courtship to turn the ladies' heads. Yes, #22 are the bird that hovers--hummingbird, and the sound is made by the wings going so fast, they hum--thus the name. The AK marmot (#18) is, as he said, in the Brooks Range, which is above the Arctic Circle. The term pygmy refers to a tribe of very short people in the African interior. They now have a politically correct name which I can't recall. I'm sure there's an article on Wikipedia. The bats eat insects. The Grand Canyon rattlesnake is an animal I've never seen, and I've backpacked to the canyon bottom 3 times, and twice into nearby Havasu Canyon. Yes, no matter how weird it might appear, the gar is real, and it's a species of fish. Like my mom used to say, the Florida panther is "as rare as hens' teeth".😀 Some scientists have studied them for years, yet have never seen one in person--only via camera traps. I think that the name he left out of the list was puma. There are cats in Africa, but not these. There, they're lions like in Lion King, plus jaguars, cheetahs, leopards--23 species in all, according to Wikipedia. The CA condor feeds on carrion, i.e., dead things, as do all condors and vultures. Being bald, they don't get rotting body crud all over their heads, since they many times bury their heads in the remains of the body to get at the meat.

Sorry but not so. In the west, cougar attacks on humans are an infrequent but periodic occurrence. Not long ago one of two brothers hiking in CA was killed. Since they are the same species, I see no reason a FL panther wouldn't kill and eat a human but the reason they aren't known to is probably just because there are so few of them. As for alligators, most human who die by gator do so because they hit one with their car which then runs off the road. But occasionally gators have been known to attack people. The state of Florida has confirmed that over the past 10 years, Florida has averaged eight unprovoked alligator bites per year, nearly all non-fatal. But under the right (wrong?) circumstances--a child with no adult around for example--there's no reason a gator wouldn't kill and eat a human.
