In Kentucky we do get snow but usually not much, when we get it it's an inch or 2 or less and it's gone in a couple of days. Last year where I am we basically got none. This time we got six inches, with an inch of ice on top. The state had, I believe 80,000 homes without power at one point b/c of the ice. I live on a farm, and I'm spending all my time taking hay out to the horses and making sure they have fresh unfrozen water. Walking thru the frozen snow in the fields has actually bruised my feet, it's like walking thru broken concrete. It's been extremely cold, I measured it at 9 degrees F one morning-sorry I don't know the conversion but it's arctic temps. Today we're getting another 2-4 inches of snow, in the southern part of the state it's up to six inches. Next week we're supposed to get another arctic cold snap with the temps possibly going down to zero. Temps are running 20-25 degrees colder than normal.

It seems that most Brits have a very erroneous idea of USA weather. Just because it's the South does not mean that it is always hot or warm. Mainly, only southern Florida and Southern California stay warm during the winter. I live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and it seldom snows, but it gets down to freezing temps often enough to be a thing. So, we have upper 90's and 100's during the summer down to 30's in the winter.

It always shocks the folks who travel down here to escape the snow and cold temps. I imagine it is still better than winter up north, but don't think it is warm and balmy all the time.

Yeah. Lots of people have a very blanket view of weather. A place is either hot or cold. For some reason, people don’t think about the fact that there are seasons. And even in the Deep South, it gets cold sometimes.

It's not even hitting 60 here as a high in Las Vegas and the nights get to 40 (or lower at even slightly higher elevation). But people think "Las Vegas" and think "desert" and "hot." Granted, it's nothing like the cold the northern part of this very same state gets, let alone other parts of the country.

My husband works for the traveling bridge department for Norfolk Southern Railroad he had to leave home Sunday morning to work in Louisville, KY( his car is stuck in the hotel parking lot) People don't realize train tracks and bridges have to stay clear of ice and snow to prevent derailment, they had to work in two shifts 11am - 11pm his shift started at 11pm to 11am. its supposed to hit here in Nashville, TN Friday. Its going to be worse here in the South because snow and ice is rare and the road crews don't know how to deal with this like they do in the North

Lav, at the 14:00 mark you asked how the snow storm is coming into Texas. That is because a wet system from the Gulf is heading north and is running into cold air coming south. The result is a heavy snow & freezing rain storm instead of a normal thunderstorm. As the storm system heads northeast, it will continue to suck up moisture from the Gulf and mix it with very cold air.

In Chicago we don't get “snow days” because we are more then prepared with plows and snow crews that remove the snow and salt the roads. What we do get is “cold days” where the temps drop below -30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kentucky has the most extreme weathers, from 110% (f) in summer to severe ice storms (2009) that cause most of the city to lose their power, to tornadoes that cost lives. you will never know what to expect in KY lol

I currently live in Kansas and I absolutely love how much snow we got! We got about a foot of snow or slightly less. There are snow drifts that are almost up to my knees. I took advantage of the snow (after the roads were finally cleared of snow and ice), by trying skijoring with my neighbor’s large husky mix. We both loved it! We are continuing to go do that once a day until the snow eventually melts

The reason it's going "UP" and the southern states are getting hit is because you need the cold and the moisture to meet at the front. The gulf of mexico is providing the moisture and the people along the cold front (a line seperating where the cold/warm air meets) are getting hit with the snow as that gulf moisture hits the cold air. There was a lot of severe weather and tornado warnings in the states even farther south on the same day other states were getting snow and Ice storms.

I believe the blue is wind chill or “feels like” temperature. Meanwhile, California is on fire. Well Pacific Palisades is on fire with big time wildfires. I live north of Chicago. We have just a dusting of snow up here. Maybe an inch. This storm pretty much missed us up here.

I drove in a white out from Saginaw to Benton Harbor one day. I tailgated a semi. White knuckled it, even passed a snow plow because I couldn’t see the road, only the trucks tail lights.

Went to school in the Northeast. We only had snow days for 6 inches or more. In '96 we had a massive blizzard and in '97 we had 2-3 feet of snow every Wednesday for like 8 weeks straight. I see 4-10" shut down entire States when they aren't used to it. Ice, freezing rain and sleet are the worst

Huh?! 🤨 Kentucky is considered to be apart of the midwest, even though it can be considered the highest point of the south as well. So it definitely gets alot of snow like New York, Illinois, Kansas and Maryland. The states you’re thinking of that would stay hot year round is Florida and California which are both in the south part of the US. Sleet is a mixture of ice and snow. So it’s essentially an ice storm.

Northern Georgia is hard to predict winter weather. Mostly, we're too warm to see snow, but we do get a lot of ice storms (rains when above freezing, then freezes to ice when it hits...anything - tree branches, power lines, and roads.) Even 1/2 inch of ice is devastating to the South. You can't drive in ice, so the grocery store gets wiped out of milk, bread, and toilet paper days in advance. My town is supposed to get hit starting Friday early and last all day. So much depends where the freezing line is. If it's more north, we'll get freezing rain. If it's more south, we'll get several inches of snow. Since these winter storms are so rare in the South (maybe once a year, or every 2 years?), it's hard to predict how much of what will fall where. Different weather models are showing quite different results, so we won't know until it's already fallen.

I grew up in Buffalo, NY and was there for the Blizzard of 1977, where you get "Lake effect" snow. It was coming down at 4 inches an hour most of the day, then tapered to 2-3 inches an hour for several days along with lots of wind blowing it around. By the time it let up, you could sled off the roof of the house, when you opened your front door, you had to shovel the snow that had piled up out before you could leave the house and shoveling the driveway? Yeah, you had to shovel from the top down first to cut down the size of the drift (usually 5-6 feet) and then you could shovel under as usual. I will never forget that. Oh, and I'm near Louisville, KY now and it's a mess due to snow, freezing rain/sleet and then snow on top of it. School will probably be out all week and with more coming on Friday, it may be out next Monday as well. Fun times.

I still remember watching the 1977 Buffalo blizzard on ABC & NBC News. I was almost 17 yo. And the National Guards were there to help clear the snow. 100 inches. With snow drift as high. 25 to 40 feet. 1977/ almost 50 years ago. Stay warm & have a wonderful '2025'. Blessings to everyone❤

I remember as a child in northern Minnesota the snow was so deep the snow plows couldn't get through. they had to use bulldozers. when the bus finally got through it broke the mirrors off. that's how high the snow was.

Kansas City here.. so we got a thin layer of slick ice from freezing rain on everything and then we had hours of sleet, which is frozen when it hits the ground but kind of sticks together. It made the pavement like sandpaper, but on road surfaces that were being driven over it just made it a solid sheet of ice. And then we had 14 inches of snow on top. Kids have been out of school all week, they havent been back from Winter break yet.

Thanks for the video Thurston! So I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and while the storm was dangerous in many places, it was not in the area we call the Delaware [river] Valley of Eastern PA, New Jersey, and Delaware. Philadelphia got around 3 inches and South Jersey around 4" in the storm which arrived Monday, January 6th morning. Philadelphia City Offices and Schools were closed for the Monday by 5 PM on Sunday while it didn't start snowing until around 5 AM. The local news stations blow everything out of proportion with any weather event.

When I was growing up in Wisconsin and there was a snowstorm we would all gather around the radio first thing in the morning and listen to the announcements of closings. It would read off all the schools that were closed and you would sit there with great anticipation hoping to hear your school's name called so that you could have the day off too! Snow days were the best! Because of where I live though you had to have quite a lot of snow with really bad wind to not go to school.

Not every year, but all 50 States receive different amounts of snow. Yes, California currently has some deadly wildfires in Southern California. They also have thirty six snow ski resorts that depend upon massive amounts of snow each winter to stay in business. Kentucky has two ski resorts. Out of the 37 States that collectively have 480 resorts, New York has the most in one State with 51. You can ski down the volcano in Hawaii. It does not have a resort. It does not have a ski lift. Someone with a four wheel drive vehicle has to take you to the top. Or hire a helicopter.

This is the worst winter storm in a decade+. It is absolutely newsworthy. For instance, I live in Eastern Missouri, we got about an average year's worth of snow from just this storm and we got off easy. A lot of areas in Kansas got a foot, foot and a half or 2 feet of snow which is a lot even for them. For instance, Chapman recorded 20.5". Topeka got 17(again, a year's worth of snowfall.) Kansas City and St. Joe were crippled for 2 days because of the ice and most of thr areas out here were completely shut down for Sunday and Monday. It was a bad storm. It's not a media conspiracy.

It's a blizzard because of the high winds during the snowstorm. I'm in the Kansas City area and we got 1/4 inch of ice before getting 12 inches of snow and winds were 30-40 miles per hour. Storm moved from the middle of the US all the way to the East coast, traveling about 800 miles. I've posted several videos showing me clearing 12 inches of snow with a leaf blower.

We do get snow days off from school, but how much snow there needs to be for them to call a snow day varies tremendously by region. Where I grew up in New York State, where it snowed a lot, it needed to be a *lot* of snow before they'd call off school. Where I live now, where it very rarely snows, any snow at all is usually enough to shut everything down. It does makes sense: where I grew up, there were municipal snow plows and giant stores of salt and sand and gravel for the roads, so it needed to be pretty bad before the roads became very unsafe. We also put snow tires on our cars every winter. Here in Portland, they don't have any of that -- no salt, no plows, no snow tires -- nor does anyone have the slightest idea how to drive properly in snow or ice (it's not a difficult skill to learn, but it takes some practice to be reliably decent at it), so any snow on the road at all tends to make conditions dangerous.

The storm that's coming into Texas & moving across the southeast over the next few days actually originated in the eastern Pacific off the west coast of Mexico, & traveled northeast across Mexico into Texas. I live on the east coast in Delaware. We dont get much snow if any during the winter. This storm hit us hard and I got somewhere close to 8". Because I live in an apt., no one owns snow shovels so it was hard to get out. It took several days and I needed to get out because we are going to get another big storm this weekend with yet more snow and I need to re-stock the refridgerator.

The rest of my family are in Indiana and they got more snow today on top of the snow that fell Monday and Tuesday. It's a bad winter this year for sure!! I grew up in a tiny village in Wisconsin. I rode the school bus to school in the next town. The county took care of plowing the highway, but not the village itself. If the road into my village wasn't plowed the school bus just didn't take the turn and skipped us completely. My parents would call the school and explain the situation. If the bus wasn't gonna pick us up, my parents would not be responsible for getting us there either. I got MORE snow days than my classmates. 😂

Schools won't usually close unless there is at least 20cm. We just get on with it. Roads are usually clears within a few hours of the storms ending. Perfect ballet of plows, logistics and hard work.

You should check out the blizzard of 1993 that buried large chunks of Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina in feet of snow. I was a Senior in High School at the time and we went more than two weeks without power. Some areas were without electricity for more than a Month. Many people died from freezing or starving to death. It was crazy!

North Texas here…We are supposed to get snow/ice late today through Friday. They expect 3” to 10” inches to accumulate, depending on location. We have been in the upper 20’s F in the evenings, so dealing with freezing. Waiting to see if schools will be closed tomorrow. 🤞🏻

I’m in North Dakota, in the middle of blizzard ally. We haven’t even had a true snow storm where I’m at. Something that typically happens multiple times a year! The temps have also been really mild for this time of year. Like yeah it’s still cold and we still have snow, but it’s been really pretty mild. We’re use to seeing blizzards like what Kansas City saw. And yes, if it’s bad enough, we do close down even in ND. They will close down interstate for safety reasons, and schools also close. Of course now, there’s no such thing as snow days for students since Covid. What would have been a snow day has been replaced with zoom classes. Back in 1996/1997 we had a pretty bad blizzard. It resulted in us having to make up something like 11 days of school. School usually ends near the 22nd-28th of May. We went to school into June that year. The worst blizzard I have only seen pictures of but it was the ND blizzard of 1966. The only thing peeking out of the snow was the tops of telephone poles. My mom said my grandpa had to dig a tunnel to the barn. I also will never remember the F-C conversion lol. We have this thing called “feels like” temperature. It’s whatever the temperature is plus factoring in the temperature and speed of the wind. All I can say is -3F, if you add wind to that, can easily feel like -30F. Right now in my city it’s 18F (which is actually warm) but the feels like temp is 6F.

The worst that snow (without ice) can do to drivers is get them stuck. It’s similar to getting stuck in mud, but it’s caked up over the ground instead of in the ground. I got stuck once this week, but I managed to turn the wheels back and forth to clear more space and then shift back and forth between drive and reverse fast enough to get loose. Otherwise it would be very expensive to get my car towed out of the snow. Note to future self: in these conditions, don’t try to park where parking is allowed if that area is still covered in deep snow. Instead park on the cleared dead end road even if it’s otherwise not allowed based on signs.

These storms are more snow further south than people are used to. We're getting lots of snow in the northern states too, but it's not as unusual for us. The biggest danger is people being unfamiliar with how to drive in ice and snow. Us northerners have a lot of practice driving in snow and ice, but the southern states rarely get any.

I grew up in Kansas where my parents and all 4 of my brothers still are. My parents got about a foot of snow with another 20 inches of snow drifts in some places. Then underneath all of that they got about an inch of ice. I don't remember if it was the day of the ice storm or the day after but they ended up having to close EVERY SINGLE highway in Kansas except for the Northeast Turnpike because of how dangerous the ice was and how many car accidents it caused. I know schools were out at least through Wednesday maybe even today and tomorrow but don't know that for sure first because of all of the snow and ice but then yesterday was because of the extreme temperatures. Kansas saw the most snow in one day then they ever have in history.

It’s bad because it’s hitting areas that are not prepared for this type of snow. I live in the Boston area and 6”/ 15cm is nothing. But traffic stopping in Kentucky. When you add ice, that’s when it’s hazardous. Even heavy semis slide. You can have snow days. Usually for day care, elementary and maybe high school. Otherwise they announce online classes. You usually see this in higher Ed settings or heavy urban areas. Snow thunder usually occurs when it’s snowing very heavily. I can sometimes hear muffled thunder during a nor’easter.

They cancel school a whole lot more today than they did when I went to school. Used to have snow waist deep when I was going out to the bus still had school lol. Rarely did we have a snow day now they are calling off school all the damn time. I live in the deep south on the coast but I grew up on the PA/NY line. Actually I am up here right now and its absolutely miserable. This foot to a foot and a half is nothing though this area has been pounded by lake effect. We haven't had the ice though these other areas had ice and snow. It was around 60 a week ago and its been 15-25 since and snowing every day. At least a couple feet but the snow has compacted down it would probably be 3 foot if it hadn't compacted so now its just like heavy blocks of ice basically with snow on top. Lot of fun trying to shovel it. A month ago there was another storm that dumped 5 foot of snow just north of here a little bit probably 2 foot here. Can't wait to get home to South Carolina. Usually never up here this time of year at least not the past 25 years that I have lived down south haven't lived up here in a long time but still have a home up here and another on the Gulf in AL. Didn't leave the house for a few days and it took me probably 45 min to clear the snow off my Suburban and the damn doors and windows were froze shut. When I shoved the snow off the top of the truck too the snow hitting the ground next to it was past the tires halfway up the doors. I put it in 4wd and just drove through it. Good thing the neighbor has a big ass tractor with a plow he has been coming by almost every day to plow us out even though I only left the house one time. I left for food the other day and it was decent hadn't snowed all day. Till I went out lol. Then it came down so fast couldn't even see the damn roads everything was just white and no plow trucks to be seen. Took me 2x as long to get home wouldn't go over 45mph the whole way.

One winter when I was a kid we sledded off our roof straight into huge snow drifts that were well over 10ft tall lol and I still have dad’s pics from the blizzard of 77. If we had a snow day things were BAD because you could ski or snowmobile in.

Snow days happen when there could be danger getting to school. Danger means different things to different states. Minnesota would need a whole lot of snow to cancel school. New England may cancel school not because of the snow, but because of the ice on the road. A few centimeters of snow may cause cities and towns in Southern California and Texas to go into full panic mode.

Snow days in Southern New England are only if there is excessive snow, making it difficult for school busses to travel and making walking to school on unplowed streets and sidewalks too dangerous. School departments hesitate calling off school. In Massachusetts communities are required to have 180 days of school a year. Every snow day, or any cancelled day due to other circumstances, has to be made up at the end of the school year. In 1978 this hesitancy was almost catastrophic. On February 5th I was a teacher at an elementary school. The morning forecast called for a few inches of snow and school was not cancelled. By lunch it was clear we were going to get a lot more snow than was forecasted. The decision was made to close school at mid-day. This was a nightmare scenario. It was before the internet, before cell phones. The only way to get word out to the public was by television, radio or by word of mouth. Parents at work, in or out of town, had to be notified that their children were being dismissed early. School busses and drivers needed to be called into service. Children were not allowed to walk home alone. Parents came to the school by car or on foot and escorted kids home in groups. When busses finally arrived to take kids home, the snow was about 6 inches high. The streets were not plowed, sanded or salted. My city is built on a series of very steep hills with some very narrow streets. Busses could not make it up the hills. Some became stuck on the narrow streets. All the while the snow was coming down. Strangers opened their doors and took in kids who were stranded on the busses, keeping them warm, making calls to parents who had no idea where their children were. It took some children 4 or more hours to get home. At the end of the day, over 3,000 children got home safely. The snow continued for 2 more days dropping 28 inches of snow in all. The city was literally paralyzed for nearly a week. Parents and the community as a whole were up in arms about the lack of preparation for this storm. Going forward, the school department called school off whenever there was even a hint of snow in the forecast. That was not a practical solution. Over time, a more sensible approach was reached. Now, 5 inches of forecasted snow seems to be the number when school will be cancelled. Now with TV and internet, schools in many communities know early on that school will be cancelled and plans can be made. Kids love snow days.. until they have to make them up at the beginning of summer vacation in June.

To answer your question... The cold front comes down from the North.. Heads down into Texas.. Like most tornados.. the front turns back North and travels North east.. So it just appears the storm is coming out of the south.. ( When the warm air out of the South meets the cold air.. coming from the north.. The storm direction turns.. goes back up on a northrast direction. This can also cause tornados..)

This is not all of the north as I am in the Chicagoland area and our ground is snow free ... and we, meaning the midwest and northern states, have definitely seen worse. Ask Buffalo residents about blizzards. However, as you mentioned, this is not common for some of these folks so they will see it as major. A coworker of mine said her kids still have not returned to school because of the snow. Over a foot is major but no one fares well when electricity goes out. And yes, Kentucky definitely gets snow and quite often ice storms.
