I think one of the biggest reasons this is so compelling is the reverberation/hall effect. So many renditions of this music doesn't convey the scale of what this battle was meant to represent. In this remix, you feel like you're in the massive presence of Lavos with song echoing from the heavens. All too many other remixes make you feel like you're listening to the music in a small room, whereas this gives you the sheer scale of the battle. It's the same with Dillard's other compositions like his Star Trek medley; the reverberations are perfect for a surround effect that immerses the subject as if the space in which he is listening is as vast as the outer reaches of space itself. Brilliantly done.

The incredible thing about Lavos, is that it is a present threat throughout the entirety of the game, and never speaks to the heroes. It's arguable that the Villains enthralled by Lavos' power (Like the Queen of Zeal) May have never even communicated with it themselves. Lavos, in that way, is like a force of nature, a cog in the machinery of reality....making the hero's victory all the more incredible within the story. Lavos is not the master of all the villains of the story, but rather their logical endpoint. Lavos is the distilled failures of those Crono and the gang fought against.

There's a power to this piece that not a lot of covers can match. It's honestly better than the original game music in my opinion. There's a specific feeling I have which triggers that, so I will try to describe it, since it was a lot of fun for me to write down my feelings regarding The Deep Beckons. When I played Chrono Trigger and still play Chrono Trigger, I often find myself comparing it to a good movie. I'm not talking about the game being inspired by a movie, though the idea that Chrono Trigger takes some inspiration from Studio Ghibli is something I can definitely see. What I mean is I often felt that my relationship with Chrono Trigger is more like a relationship one would have with a favorite movie, or even a favorite novel in some cases. It's something I can just pick up and enjoy, you know? When I think of my other favorite games - EarthBound, Super Metroid, OMORI, Undertale, Yume Nikki - I feel like I enjoy them in a different light than I do Chrono Trigger. With a lot of those games I find them to be good works in their own rights, but they don't have that feeling like I can jump into the world and get immersed like a good movie, where every element is good enough to overshadow any lacking areas because the ride is just too good. Going back to the CT/Ghibli comparisons, I feel like Chrono Trigger (my favorite game of all time, if you couldn't tell) triggers the same set of emotions that Spirited Away (my favorite movie of all time), rather than the same set of emotions triggered by even those other favorite games I listed. I think the only one of those I could even say comes close-ish to Chrono Trigger for me is OMORI, but that's a story for another day. Anyway, where am I going with this? Basically, what I'm trying to say is that Chrono Trigger, despite being a video game, doesn't really feel like one to me, and in good ways. And I think the treatment you applied to these songs does them wonders. The pipe organ flourishes of World Revolution, the intensity of the Last Battle section, the emotion of the To Far Away Times part and the awesome reprise of the main theme included, these all exude those same feelings I have with the original game. But what I really think sells it for me is the progression. This exudes very different emotions at points, but it's all one work. Everything feels like it transitions naturally from one piece to the next, yet despite the differences of each individual section I could jump into any part of this arrange and enjoy it. That's, if I were to guess, what also gives Chrono Trigger that special cinematic edge that other games don't have. Chrono Trigger is able to bounce between light hearted sections with darker ones without them feeling contrasting. There's epic moments and there's emotional moments, yet they all feel satisfying to bounce between. Think about it - to me, at least, this game makes traveling to just locations or dungeons, even on repeat playthroughs, feel satisfying. Zeal, Zeal Palace, the Black Omen, the Ocean Palace, Magus' Keep, the Ruined Future, the Lavos interior, the Courtroom battle, I could go on and on about how each place feels so special to me and how its executed. In other games I mentioned - like Earthbound, or OMORI - maybe entering a certain part or two feels super rewarding for me - but in Chrono Trigger there's more areas like that than I could possibly count. It takes things that in other games could be pretty mediocre and makes them shine in a way nothing else really does, and I can see that same spirit in these Chrono Cinematica remixes you've done. World Revolution is a hard song to capture, let alone combined with Last Battle and To Far Away Times. Other cinematic cover artists, such as the "Chrono Trigger Symphony" series by "The Synthetic Orchestra", try to emulate the original's formula while also trying to change it in ways which don't quite make sense, and that ends up backfiring when the changes don't make sense - ex, in the case of the aformentioned "Chrono Trigger Symphony", replacing the pipe organ parts with more generic brass sounds. But, just like Chrono Trigger, and just like movies I love, you take your time with each part to make them feel noteworthy and special, with every changing section being memorable in its own right, and that makes the whole work more special than any other.

I consider myself to be a student of music--not a musician, that is not within my gift, but a student and appreciator of music, much as one might study art history--and your reinterpretations of another musical genius, Yasunori Mitsuda, merit the recognition only a public performance can offer. I hope someday your work will form the basis of an interpretation by a professional orchestra and choir, most likely in Japan where musical excellence of this sort is appreciated. Please keep it up!
@ScylfingHelm4 жыл бұрын
Though as an addendum I will say, please consider exploring Mitsuda's milieu further in your corpus beyond Chrono Trigger and your Xeno Cross album. CT is sort of his Mozart phase in my view; essential, but still preliminary. Chrono Cross is pretty diverse, but largely his Romanticist period; Xenogears is full-on Wagner; whilst Xenosaga I is a reply to/rebuttal of Wagner merged with Medieval a capella choral themes, and of course the easy-listening techno one expects from JRPGs.

@Lavos I respect your opinion on this matter... on another note, I would encourage you to watch videos of the FF7 Remake (or better yet, play it yourself) that has been recently released, more specifically toward the latter half of the game where the plot makes a huge deviation from the original... FF7's Remake is not a true remake of the game, it's first part only spans from the beginning to after the post-Shinra HQ highway chase... this basically makes the game more of a "retcon sequel," which would make more sense for any Chrono series entry as time / dimensional travel is already a part of the story, where as shoe-horning it into FF7 (Cloud and co. might as well be "Chrono Triggers" of their own regard at this point) seemed out of place IMO... I feel that IF Square Enix WAS going to do a Chrono Trigger Remake (regardless of how you and I would feel about it), they should follow the same formula they did for FF7's "Remake" (again, not a true Remake)... if they did a 100% true-to-original remake, then I would be inclined to agree with you that such a remake would be bad for Chrono Trigger, at that point they might as well port the original to PS5... since why not, they've already done that for PS1, iPhone, PSNetwork, and Android...

@Lavos I'm just frankly tired of them porting Chrono Trigger DS to so many platforms, I would love for Square Enix to somehow breathe new life into the series... a sequel to Cross would be the best way to do that, but with them so hyper-fixated on milking FFs, I honestly feel that the Chrono series will stay dead... it's kind of depressing for me to think about... there are friends I grew up with who were also Chrono fans, they were hoping for a sequel in 2005, then 2010, then 2015... some of them aren't around anymore, so to speak... I will be thinking of them if and when I play a new Chrono entry... quite honestly at this point, if I had the time, I would probably just make a remake or new title myself... but I would NEVER publish it, since we know how that ends... cough... C&D... cough...
