A friend and I after multiple days of evaluation have made a revision to the lyrics that we believe to be most accurate to the words actually sung. Although the current subtitles are mostly accurate, there are a few minor and major discreptancies. Lay by your pleading Law lies a bleeding Burn all your studies down And throw away your reading Small power the word has And can afford us Not half so many Privileges as the sword has Which protects such wasters And spurns all disasters And will make your servants Quickly greater than their master Which disarms all censures And gains all adventures And soon will make apprentice free In spite of his indentures. Tis not in season To talk of reason Nor call it legal When the sword will have its treason It takes off tall things And sets up small things And masters money Though money masters all things It conquers the crown too The furs and the gown too This set up a presbyter And quickly pulls him down too This fits a layman To preach and to pray, man And tis this can make a Lord Of he that was a drayman. He that can tower Or he that now is lower Would be but a simple fool To put away his power Take books and rent 'em Who would invent 'em When, as the sword replies: Negatur Argumentum Your grand college-butlers Must stoop to your sutlers There's no fault in a library That yields not to the cutlers The blood that is spilt, sir Denies any guilt, sir So truly, have you seen me run? My sword up to thy hilt, sir! Lay by your pleading Law lies a bleeding Burn all your studies down And throw away your reading...

The original can be found, with some typos, in "The Loyal Garland": quod.lib.umich.edu/e/eebo2/A70655.0001.001/1:3.32?rgn=div2;view=fulltext. The version in the video isn't far from the original, but there's a couple of additions that spoil certain stanzas -- and it's missing my favorite: "This subtle Disaster, / Turns Bonnet to Beaver / Down goes a Bishop, Sirs, and up starts a Weaver."

This channel is a nice treasure trove of songs not often shared. Usually I see the bigger channels post the same popular songs and different versions, but your channel (so far) has only one song I've heard before.

The alternative title of this song is "The Dominion of the Sword". A Royalist protest against the Force Majeure of the Parliamentarians.

These songs I feel have a deeply important place in the understanding we must have of the beginnings of modernity.
@OlavEngelbrektson Жыл бұрын
@@lelieutenant7386 That is certainly part of it, I've been trying to explain it to myself and I'm still not sure how to even frame it. There is something about the way in which the organic nature of civilization and culture was ruptured (the divinely ordained law being broken in order to usher in modernity at the trial of Charles I to take a very relevant example) and the way in which unfettered, unrestrained extremism has seemingly conquered the forces of order and law. Democracy is after all just a civil war without bloodshed and weapons (until someones makes it so). I'm not sure if any of this even makes sense, but maybe there is something to it.

Most popular historic songs tend to be about the fierce patriotic sentiments of value-minded people, which we all love listening to regardless of the "right or wrong" sides. They laud virtue and the rightful triumph of great men over the crooked, nonpartisan knaves in power. You don't often find songs staunchly supporting those same weak-kneed establishment moderates, with their hands deep in taxpayer pockets crying "peace, compromise!" There are so many comparisons to be drawn between this song and today's semi-corrupt uniparty lovers. I suppose there are strong opinions across all parties in a debate, even centrists.

@@anderaristondo1259 the white rose is on the picture indeed, but with the red background i think it's the "sword", the power that's above both parties of this war.

Yorkshire County flag (except the back is red in modern times it’s blue) I believe it’s a synthesis, the Lancashire rose is red (hence the kings background being red and rose white)
