Here’s another original song from me, this time in the Old Saxon language, otherwise known as Old Low German. Music, lyrics and performance by yours truly. This one is about Otto I the Great’s victory against the heathen Magyars at the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. I’ve tried to make the lyrics a little more traditional this time by using Germanic alliterative verse in the verses. Let me know what you think! Upon his father's death in 936, Otto inherited the Duchy of Saxony and kingship of the Germans. He carried on his father's mission to unite all of the German tribes into a single kingdom. The pagan Magyars were marauding and threatening the realm, a problem which Otto responded to strongly, beating them at the Battle of Lechfeld. The German victory secured the Kingdom of Germany and ended nomadic invasions into Western Europe. Following this triumph, Otto I was hailed as emperor and father of the fatherland, and he used his strengthened position as Defender of Christendom after the battle to pave the way for his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 962. I hope you enjoy the song. Please like and share the video and leave a comment - I love reading them! If you’d like to support the channel, you could also consider leaving a donation at buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard. My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence. Many thanks for your kindness and support as always! Lyrics: An land lioƀarô liudiô was ên Sahso gisendid. As always, we love your songs! I'm a Hungarian (magyar, as we call ourselves), nice to see some representation - even as the opposing side here! We call this battle as the "Battle of Augsburg", which ended the raiding parties towards Western Europe. The last successful raid was conducted against the Byzantine Empire in 968 nearby Thessaloniki, which was a smaller raiding force. Afterwards, most of the attempts were repelled - including the Battle of Arcadiopolis which was led by Sviatoslav I of Kiev, accompanied by many groups of warriors, which included us, magyars, too. As the aftermath, to be short, this led to the Christianization of the magyars and by the coronation of Stephen I of Hungary (in his original, pagan name: Vajk), the Kingdom of Hungary was born. Skald, don't stop with your composing!

Excellent work! 😃😊👍 Perhaps of interest to the British: Buried in Magdeburg Cathedral (Saxony-Anhalt) lies the first wife of the Saxon-German Emperor Otto I, Princess Ædgyth of England, granddaughter of Alfred the Great, Queen consort of Germany! This marriage was also intended to strengthen the alliance between the two Saxon kingdoms, including in the fight against the Vikings. BTW: Not all Saxons and Angles left Germany, most of them stayed here. Many of the Angles moved to Thuringia. All places in Germany with the term ‘Angel’ (Engel) still show this today. (You understand? England...). Descendants of the Angles therefore also live in Thuringia. The Old Saxons continued to live in northern Germany (today: Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, northern Saxony-Anhalt), Otto the Great was the first Saxon on the German (East-Franconian) imperial throne. Greetings from North Saxony Anhalt! Hengist and Horsa! Wesad gi hele! kzbin.info/www/bejne/envTcpl6qtJnedU

@@Æthelstān-thé-glørîøüs-96 In Germany, the leader of the pagan Saxons ‘Widukind’ (also known as Wittekind or Wittikund) fought against the Christian Franks in the 8th century. In Germany (there in Sax-Land) also stood the shrine of all pagan Saxons, IRMINSUL (or Erminsul)! This Saxon sanctuary was probably located near the Eresburg. In the end, the Saxons lost the battle and became Christians - just like in England. (And Otto the Great, as a Christian, became the first Saxon to become German Emperor) Have you ever visited the ‘Thorsberg moor’ in the Angeln-Germany region, the sacred sacrificial site of the ANGELS? The archaeological finds are exhibited in Gottorf Castle, Schleswig, including the Nydam ship - a ship of the Angles!😎 The Angel people are not a Danish tribe. The Danes lived somewhere else at that time and only came to this region later!🤨

Skald! Sorry for the late comment, I have been in the middle of nowhere for a number of days and it would be an understatement to say that seeing a new upload from you was jubilating. I like this language, ever so slightly different so that I have no clue what you’re saying but similar enough I make it out, if you know what I mean. Still working out the circumflexes’ indication in this language. And interesting to see the use of ð over þ in all circumstances. And a nice site is the J being used. A new language is always an interesting experience, and I’m glad you share this knowledge for the world, especially as I’m not familiar at all with this language. Lovely instrumental too. The strings and percussion complimented each other and the language very well. I think the consonant-heavy syllables really suit it. Thank you as always Skald Keep up the good work God Bless

Old Saxon seems so much closer to Old English than High German. Its possible that Otto the Great's wife, Eadgyth of Wessex, wouldn't have needed any language lessons since they would have probably been almost mutually intelligible speaking in their own languages and would have made sense of the differences quick enough. Louis IV of West Francia/ France, who grew up in England with his maternal uncle King Aethelstan from the ages of 3 to 16 and probably spoke Old English as his first language, also had no difficulty communicating with Otto and indeed the proceedings at the Synod of Ingelheim in 948 were translated into the "lingua teudisca (presumably Saxon rather than Old High German)" so that Otto and Louis would understand.

Because Old Saxon is from the Low German branch. High German and Low German differ greatly. Even today. But High German aspects became way more dominant in the written language, that is why Modern Standard German (which is also called "High German", which is misleading) resembles the High German dialects more than the Low German ones.

Letter from Frederick Barbarossa to Saladin about the strength of the German people (and other peoples of the HRE): "You have desecrated the Holy Land that we reign over by the grace of the Eternal King (...). We demand that you return the land with everything you have stolen. Otherwise, we will start a war: we set the date for one year after November 1 for a trial by combat, by the merit of the living Cross and the true Saint Joseph. With the help of God, you will see the strength of our conquering eagle, our battalions of many races, the Germanic power fighting in peace. The untamed people from the source of the Rhine, the youths of the Danube who never retreat, the tall Bavarians, cunning Swabians. Then you will see our watchful Franks, the swordsmen of Saxony, the tireless Burgundians, the cruel Alpine tribes, the death-thirsty Bohemians, the savage Bolognese, the navigators of Venice, the captains of Pisa. Finally, on the date I mentioned, for the glory of Christ, you will see that my right hand, which you accuse of weakness due to age, has not forgotten how to wield a sword." - Itinerarium regis Ricardi

@@haroldgōdwinessunu We do not exactly have the "Moravian" language. We speak Czech all over the republic. You would find small differences in fringe regional dialects, but only in the shape of a few words, not in a language as a whole. Learn Czech and you will effectively learn "Moravian" 😄 I must warn you though. Although the claim about the difficulty of a language is used by many nations, the Czech is indeed particularly hard to master. It's a Slavic language, hence it has nothing similar to English.

As an English speaker I would say that I find Frankish more understandable than Old Saxon yet both sound pleasant in my opinion. Maybe the Old Saxons preserved more of the older Germanic languages while western German dialects seem to get closer to modern German in that time period. That is just a guess.

@@sethfrisbie3957 That guess is true. The changes that made modern German all originated in the south and south west. For Example: The second German Consonant Shift did NOT happen in the north of Germany. That is why you still have dialects in northern Germany that say "Water" (standard German: Wasser; Engl: water) or "slapen" (standard German: schlafen; Engl: sleep) If it weren't for the French influence in English, English would be much closer to the old Germanic language than modern German. But because of the French influence English changed much and often seems to be a mixed Romance-Germanic language.

Perhaps of interest to Britons interested in history. The first wife of Otto the Great, Princess Ædgyth of England, granddaughter of Alfred the Great, queen consort of Germany, brought the veneration of St Oswald to Germany. The ‘Thorsberg moor’ (Þunresbeorg mōr), the sacred sacrificial site of the Angles, is located in the Angeln region (Schleswig-Holstein). The archaeological finds are on display at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig, including the fully preserved Nydam ship - a ship of the Angles!😎 (The Angles are not a Danish tribe. The Danes lived elsewhere at that time and only came to this region later). In Germany (there in Sax-Land) also stood the shrine of all pagan Saxons, IRMINSUL (or Erminsul)! This Saxon sanctuary was probably located near the Eresburg.. The leader of the pagan Saxons ‘Widukind’ (also known as Wittekind or Wittikund) fought against the Christian Franks in the 8th century. In the end, the Saxons lost the battle and became Christians - just like the Saxons in England.
