It was really informative to hear your analogy between law school in Singapore and 'Law School'. On your first point, at my law school in Sydney, we do moots, bail applications, mediation etc in our University courts (a replica of a real court on campus) which is comparable to a mock trial but of course not the same. Although, I did hear from law friends studying at other Universities in Sydney, that it isn't a part of their course/assessment curriculum which is extremely odd. You would expect some sort of consistency across Sydney at least. In saying that, law firms in Australia do host mock trials for law students across the State which is extremely similar to what you see in 'Law School' - we have a judge, witness, plaintiff, defendant etc. and a whole board of people consisting of professors, lawyers, students etc. examining the mock trial. My impression of 'Law School' was that it managed to portray relatively similar features of law school, particularly the topics; as compared to other Korean law dramas. Also when the professors went through the problem questions, I could totally relate. By far the most distinctive experience was in first year. My criminal law professor would make the whole class split up into groups to solve problem questions on the board. Then she would go through the answers and ‘scrutinise’ them. So, essentially if you didn’t do your readings, you were completely and utterly screwed. Also, in the first years, the law professors essentially try to strain out all the law students which they considered to not have proficient legal writing skills. I remember clearly at one stage, my Criminal Law professor told an international student (in front of the whole class!!) to quit law school. Shocking!! In winding up my little comparison; 😂 overall, I consider 'Law School' to be the best depiction of law school by far. The only aspects which were different is that there isn't that sense of 'urgency' or competitiveness during the exam period as you see in the drama. Also what student is ever that close to their professor. 😂

Concerning mock trials, in my school they're organized by the students who invite the professors to supervise in the background; it makes sense that in the same way some are practicing a lawyer's role, others will be practicing for the judges' role: so the whole trial is executed by the students and the professors are silent observers for the duration of.

@@leeknowiscute1621 That sounds like a scam ha, though I'm sure a (computer school?) has its different majors - each with its own formation. I had a mock trial at my law school but That was not that fancy as it showed in the drama.its like an ordinary class but yes, We had to pretend to be like judge lawyers, victim n defendant.
@charlycatfightsback3 жыл бұрын
That actually sounds super interesting I'm not sure if our uni will ever adopt it as part of our core curriculum here in Singapore but there are competitions here and there that are somewhat similar to replicating a trial!!

I am not sure whether this is the best platform to ask for advice BUT i would suggest going on reddit and searching up on what law students/lawyers experience in your home country! This is an example: www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/beiwc/hey_reddit_lawyers_is_law_school_worth_it/?ref=share&ref_source=link I hope this helps! Law school / the legal profession is not for everybody but the same can be said for other professions as well. Just make sure you are making an informed decision and you won't regret it

Oh it isn't relateable just for law students. I study business and management, and I have a prof who's the CEO of an IT company, and he made it very clear from the beginning that he expects the same attitude and behaviour from us as he does with his employees. And yes I know studying law is way harder, that's why I didn't go to law school, but the sudden change in the effort required from us compared to the other teachers was shocking. By some standards, for example by the high school's standards I went to, these expectations should be baseline, the bare minimum, but some guys really are there just because their parents said so. Paying 100% attention, not fiddling with your phone, not wearing hats and beanies in class, not showing up completely clueless about the day's material, being on time both with arriving to class and with the assignments. He started every class, especially at the beginning of the semester, by asking who's taken a look at the day's material, and the ones who haven't got grilled to the bone for 5-10 minutes. He also made sure to emphasize that we should not take this personally, he just simply wants to encourage everybody to take 10 minutes the evening before class and look at the material, which is very fair and understandable. The subject he was teaching in this semester was macroeconomics, which is not everybody's cup of tea. Looking at trillion dollar figures, inflation, exchange and interest rate charts and trying to connect them to global or domestic events in a given country for 90 minutes is a special experience xD About nice professors, in the previous semester the first part of the same module I wrote about here was taught by a Santa looking, friendly, older prof with a mustache. He made sure to integrate brands into the material which we cared about. Activision Blizzard, Koenigsegg, Bang & Olufsen, FIFA, Rolls Royce, Nike, Rolex, Patek Philippe etc. My favourite day of the week was wednesday where I had nothing but a double class with him.

No mock trials for law students in Singapore? Ever heard of the Advocacy Cup?
@charlycatfightsback3 жыл бұрын
Hi!!! If you read the caption in the video at 1:57, we clarified that mock trials are not part of our normal curriculum, which seems to case in the drama (since most of the students are participating). From what I understand for the Advocacy Cup run by NUS, participants have to apply to join the competition and it's not mandatory for students. I think the judges in those moots, even for advocacy, are never other students in the cohort but at least seniors, practicing lawyers, or even actual judges.
