My mom got “the big C”. It was minimal, noninvasive, no symptoms. She still got a full mastectomy, which ended up being a very good thing because they found a two little sneaky tumors hiding out undetected, one of them actually WAS invasive. My mom doesn’t miss her chest in the slightest, she actually loves that she can wear smaller shirts now, and that there is less back pain and neck strain from the weight. I know not everyone is like this, and would definitely feel insecure if something about their body changed so quickly, but the moral I’m trying to say is that sometimes change is worth it. If my mom got a lumpectomy, or waited longer, the invasive tumor that was undetected by scans would’ve grown bigger and possibly spread to other parts of her chest. Recovery sucks, but it’s the tiniest fraction compared to how much life you could live afterwards.

When I had my hysterectomy, my doctor suggested a DNA test for mutations. Turns out, I have a genetic mutation that gives me a 50/50 odds of developing breast cancer. And provided nearly every menopausal woman in my family developed breast cancer, I'm more likely than not. But it does help get me a pre-emptive mastectomy covered by insurance.

Had a dear friend who went through breast cancer treatment. Years later they found stage four bone cancer. She chose to do nothing but enjoy the time left with her husband and kids because there was only prolonging the inevitable while being too sick to do anything in life. They traveled as a family, went to sport events with the kids and she had a couple of terrible months at the end but not a year or more too sick to travel with her sons hockey team or going to her daughters dance auditions.

My Aunt is going through the same thing, though its lung cancer in her case (not smoking related, but still terrible). She's on her last legs now - we're probably going to be saying goodbye within a month or so. This will be the 4th member of the family we've lost to cancer. It's truly an insidious disease.

@@dmadd4643 So sorry to hear that, dmadd. Multiple members of my extended family have died of cancer as well. My grandfather died of cancer when I was two-years-old. He was only fifty and had a twelve-year-old daughter. It's likely that his cancer was a result of his service in Vietnam and his exposure there to Monsanto's infamous Agent Orange. He was diagnosed and dead within a month's time. My uncle lived through lung cancer ten years after surviving a major stroke, but less than two years after he went into remission he caught a bad case of the flu, which turned into bronchitis and then pneumonia. He'd had a lobe of a lung removed to fight the cancer and with his reduced lung capacity he didn't make it, dying while in the hospital hooked up to oxygen and a nebulizer. The cancer didn't technically kill him, but it might as well have.

Hang on, I really need to check my mail, oh my god my life is so busy. Sure, I'll answer some questions about a murde-- Jimmy, stop running through the hall and get into the classroom while I talk to police officers right where everyone can see and hear me! I'm sure it happens, but L&O is literally every single time. If I had to guess, I'd say the show's producers were watching old Dragnet episodes and how painfully boring those interview scenes were, and they were determined to do anything to make it seem more dynamic... any excuse to move the camera around.

It's "dynamic" in name only, since what they're doing usually has no bearing on anything except as a hamfisted visual cue as to their backstory. Good scenes in good movies rivet you with the quality of the acting and the dialogue... not the fact that the players are constantly fidgeting and trying to look busy.

There was a similar case in Daytona years ago where the coroner was found to be responsible for multiple death certificates being intentionally botched. Murders were being ruled suicides, etc. He was found to be working directly for the police departments and the insurance agencies and the suspect of a murder. A body was moved to Georgia where the true cause of death was listed. The corner met his death as well and probably in a similar manner as some of the victims that ended up on his examine table. Be very, very careful of a first read and ALWAYS hire an independent lab. One is often surprised at what they actually find when you allow the “blinders” to come off. My comment is based on very real historical facts. A trace of cyanide without a cause of it being in the blood should serve as a red flag. Someone should be checking for other cases that have presented with the same/or similar levels within their bloodstream.

How sadly ironic that in season 20 Anita van Buren was diagnosed with cancer. Though if I recall correctly in the “series” finale (they later revived Law & Order again) van Buren got the news that she was in remission. I often times wonder what I’d do if I had cancer, I’m not married, no kids, I try to put myself in the mindset but it’s not always perfect, but the sensation I got from certain death (if I did nothing) was elation. What do you have to worry about if your gonna be dead in a year or two

Perhaps her patients didn't want their deaths -- and their suffering -- dragged out over a period of years. Maybe a long shot -- and if it doesn't work at least it's over quickly -- was preferable to one failed treatment after another. Maybe death didn't terrify them and life promised more pain than they wanted to deal with.
