This was the season finale of Season 14. At the end of the episode, Briscoe is retiring, and on the way out of the office, he says "It's nice to go out on a win". His retirement was linked to Jerry Orbach succumbing to a decade-long battle with prostate cancer - he passed away in December 2004, the same year as the end of Season 14.
