This is a very informative video but just that otherwise completely flawed. First the problem is not duplicated since when first trying to reproduce the issue the yellow engagement button not locked in the down engagement position and it is partially hidden behind his thumb so you need to be sharp to notice that. So basically the clutch was never tested to show it does not engage properly. Second nothing is diagnosed . All that is done is to replace the clutch with a beat up used one from e-bay on to a like new machine which makes no sense. Third no inspection or display of the current clutch is shown for the public to understand what the issue is with the bad part being replaced and how the replacement part will fix the issue at hand

Great and helpful video. I have a similar problem...Honda HRB215, serial MZBA-6405287. The blades spin and engage just fine when I put the lever in, cable is tight as well. When I go to cut the grass, the blades basically cut for a few feet then stop spinning. If I were to replace the disk/clutch lining part as you did in your video, should this solve my problem? Do you happen to know the part number I need for my mower, or where I can find the part #? Thanks in advance!

Am I the only one to notice that he did not engage the blade clutch when testing? If you own one of these machines like I do, you know the yellow safety button needs to be pushed down and stays down to engage the blades.

Undo the engine cover and stop the flywheel turning with a strap or wedging it so it does not move. In this video he has an impact tool to undo the bolt. Good luck.

I have the 217X mower, looks exactly the same. My mower is only 2 years old. My problem is that my blade clutch keeps slipping into neutral while I am mowing. Clutch is working fine, but it's like whatever it is that the yellow button engages is not securely engaging and letting the blade slip out of gear. I have to let the lever come back to the starting position, depress the yellow button again, and the blade starts and works normally, but it may disengage in 15 minutes, or two minutes. Not reliable! Very frustrating!

@kettle66 I took the actuation mechanism apart at the top of the handle and filed the groove in the plastic lever deeper with a round file (a file like you sharpen a chain saw with). That permitted the spring lever to seat deeper and it didn't vibrate out any more. Its a very tricky disassembly and reassembly! A tight fit on oddly shaped parts.

HRM215 SXA mower, serial # 6173945 blade clutch assy doesn't look the later ones. So what parts do I replace? Clutch spring 75183-VE0-000 and blade holder assy 72600-VE0-000? The only place where I can see any bonded disc material is 2 small areas on the bottom side of the brake arm and there is little wear on one side of them. So what parts need to be replaced?

I had a Honda mower with the blade brake clutch that wont let me pull the starter rope. I freed the flywheel by hand and I got the mower started but I could hear the sound of metal rubbing and a grinding sound and then I engaged the blade but when I disengaged it and restarted the mower the blade would not engage and the engine stalled and I could not pull the rope. What causes that?

I've HRU216 M2 mower and I've similar but little different issue here. I can't start my mower without pushing blade engaging lever in. It's very hard to pull cord without engaging the blade lever. I don't know is it a problem with clutch assembly? Any idea please.

I have a problem my blades. I can not engage the blades. The bail is so tight I broke the bail trying to start the blades. Blade is free, moves easily when not contacted. Any ideas.

Good catch to the person that saw the Honda mower's little yellow blade clutch engagement button was not depressed prior to the blade clutch handle being depressed. If the blade clutch mechanism handle didn't have a secondary engagement process, if somebody tripped and fell on the mower blade clutch handle while at idle the blades would spin up while the person is possibly entangled with the running mower. Not a pretty picture! I've made the mistake of forgetting to hold the little yellow button down while depressing the blade clutch handle. When it happens I have a few moments of panic and catastrophic thinking believing the mower is going to need an expensive and time consuming repair. When I trace back what my actions had been since the mower had its blade clutch engaged, I realize I'd forgotten to press and hold down the little yellow blade clutch button when depressing the blade clutch control handle. It's a big relief to hear the blades spin up when I go through the process correctly.

I replaced all that, and my blade does engage again, but it's very slow to, and when I mow it seems to slip. Can you think of what I might have done wrong?

Nice. You can also check the remaining thickness of the clutch by measuring the gap between two nearby parts, without even taking the blades off. But the problem on this one was obvious without measuring anything.

my Honda mower vibrates a lot when off clutch... could be wrong blade? when the mower clutch is activated and mowing, the mower hardly ever vibrates and runs very smooth...

I have a Honda HRB216HXA and looks just like what you are working on, Very good and simple information but I do have one question, When I try to take the bolt off the belt rotates and I can't seem to be able to unsrew the bolt. I have this mower Honda HRX217 it cuts unevenly and I suspect it is the clutch assembly as I measured it side to side and it is crooked by about 1/16 to 1/8 inch, I only used it last season and this, and since new it cuts unevenly. Drive shaft is not bent and I know this because it has never hit anything serious and does not vibrate. But I looked at the clutch/blade brake assembly diagram online and see there are 3 ball bearings. Could it be missing one of the ball bearings from the plate, making it sit crooked? Nice channel, BTW !!
