I'm so glad i found your video :-). you just save my final year Project documentation which i was writing with Microsoft word but some how the heading style format got all messed up..! and my submission dead line is tomorrow. I've been trying to rectify the problem for the past 4 hour all to no avail..!!!! Luckily i found this simply explained video clip and WHOLAAA it did the magic..!!!! I'm so so grateful !! Cheers.!

@@TownsendTek Yeah for real..! I almost lost it cos I'm a foreign student studying in Germany so its extraordinarily difficult when one ain't a native speaker of the language.! And believe me writing an entire project documentation in German language is already hell being also the reason I almost lost it when I couldn't find a solution to the styles heading format.. You just made my day really...! :-)

Hi Mishka, No, I used the style separator to split the paragraph & use two Paragraph styles. At 5:50 I turn on Show/Hide and you can see them. If you do not need a Table of Contents for the doc you can just bold manually (I probably would not bother with a char style). But if you need a TOC you'll need Style Separators. You can insert these yourself but it's very tedious in a document like this for a variety of reasons. Most organizations that work with outline numbering a lot If I

That is the style separator. It's LIKE a paragraph mark. It technically makes it 2 paragraphs so you can use 2 paragraph styles, but it prints as 1 paragraph. You can do it all manually, but it's many steps -- type heading part only, press Alt+Ctrl+Enter to Insert style separator, type rest of paragraph, apply body style to 2nd half. It's many steps and bugs 'cause the StyleSep inserts at the end of the para, not at cursor. So people get Add-in to save time. 1 click does it all.

Yes, it should work in 2010. When you say image/box/icon, are you talking about the control in the on the Home ribbon paragraph group? IF so, that is not a RIGHT click, it is a regular left click on the tiny pull down arrow at the right side of the multilevel numbers. If that's not what you're talking about, let me know.

Sorry my last post got cut off - I was going to say many people who do a lot of outlining use a Word Add-in to make features like the style separator much faster/easier. You can see an example on my website under Solutions, Macro Package Software Demos. The webcast takes a couple minutes to load completely, but then you can click 16 on the TOC to see how it does the style separator for you.

Can I ask if this works in 2010 as well. I tried to change an Outline Style and seemed it did not allow the right click on the outline level image/box/icon.

@dunnlaw1 Good point but be careful because I've seen there are several videos on KZbin that claim to show how to create an outline but use methods that don't set things up optimally and result in very unstable outlines. I have a video I made on creating them that's almost ready to post but with my current schedule it will probably be a couple weeks before I can get it up.

@dunnlaw1 Hi, I actually didn't even notice your video when I replied, so it was not comment on that - from the thumbnail it looks like yours is probably good. I was thinking about several others I've seen on here that made me cringe when I thought of people working in complex legal doucments trying to follow their steps.
