History has shown us that SC judges were confirmed, and/or hold their seats, regardless of the controversies that have dogged them from the beginning including Thomas (and his wife), Kavanaugh, and Alito (and his wife). A military officer being chosen for the job has to have been retired for seven years prior to the nomination; if less than that, it requires a special dispensation from the Senate. Mattis and Austin were both generals who were still in that seven-year period. I believe it's meant to emphasize the civilian control of the military as enshrined in the Constitution.

I love watching Lawrence!! I think he can speak the truth without fear, due to his age. Lawrence can retire anyway he chooses. He's in his 70's. Sadly, most of the others aren't at the age for retirement. They need their jobs. It's sad but true. I personally, wouldn't give a fart either way. Just report the true facts, fearlessly!! What I think is surreal and pathetic is: what is all this talk of "well, we're gonna bring him in and we're going to have a tough conversation!" Like what are you planning: that he's going to confess and decline the nomination? That he's going to say "gosh, I'm real sorry, but NOW I'm all better and things will be okay" and they're going to just let him in anyway?
