I agree. The tempo did not let his voice air out, which a voice of his power and timbre really needs to express its full potential. What a talent!
@haydenpresley20004 жыл бұрын
@@mikedeieso920 Perhaps that was the problem. I've long been a fan of Brownlee; for his voice type, he is unmatched in technique. But this interpretation of Bellini left something to be desired. There was a certain tenderness that was missing here but that I would normally expect given the subject matter.

I've been a fan of Jussi Bjorling since I was about 13-14 years old and this brother thrills me the same way. Especially his flawless beautiful high notes. I know he's a lyric tenor, but his flowing legato singing just floors me. Yeah the sopranos do Bel Canto like birds but Mr Brownlee..damn! I'm also the number 1 Jackie Wilson fan in the world, especially in his prime (he brought me to opera and Bjorling). So although I stumbled upon you late (I live in Hawaii..I gotta get off this rock more often!) rest assure Mr. Brownlee you're in great company in my book. Ok, so that is a beautiful voice; natural; beautiful timbre, good placement; clear sound; not covered; and excellent singing. Those high notes amazingly were not forced, were on pitch and actually beautiful to listen to. His is a world class voice. He is new to me so don't know how long he is singing but continued performance will refine his art/performance to include more nuance, appropriate changes in dynamics suitable to type of music (too consistently mezzoforte to forte) and refining his bel canto line (this was just to fast for the standard performance of this aria). This will come with time, good coaching (hopefully he is getting it from someone) and good choice in rep to maintain his vocal health and have a long career. This voice is the real thing; the artist needs time to develop.

@jewelmarkess9 жыл бұрын
David Zhang Exactly, this is why opera is colorblind, it cares about voices more than anything else. Only in opera can one have a black women in the roles of French countess, Irish princess, German demi-goddess, Spanish gypsy or a Japanese Geisha; a black man - Flying Dutchman or Germanic God or have an Asian "Spanish prince" or have a white Ethiopian slave. You don't even need to close your eyes. Opera audiences doesn't expect singers to "look the part" and say Simon Estes was no less believable as a Flying Dutchman than Pavarotti as a starving poet. dquibs2 - if you've not done it yet, please listen to Leontyne Price.

What on earth are you saying? Close your eyes and you don't feel it's a black man, singing? How completely ignorant!!

+Jonathan Linton - For crying out loud, calm down. a) did you not get his point, which is that the voice is paramount; b) are you saying there is a 'black' sound? one kind of 'black' voice? and c) have you listened to this? He sounds like a man, pure and simple.

Lindokuhle Msimango Unfortunately, all countries are in love with "mainstream garbage" these days. We do know wonderful South African opera singers like Pretty Yende here. There was also a very good bass among the winners of the Met Council auditions. In general, there is a long history of black opera singers in the US as well, it's just that most people in the US (and for that matter all over the world) don't know much about opera.

Very beautiful voice and rendition but the conductor kinda ruined it with the tempo. This is a very emotional aria and should be sung slower, allowing the voice to expand more and display its full leggato capacities. Bellini is the epitome of long and well-developed melodies and this maestro seems to have forgotten that. It's no so "bubbly" and "upbeat" like Rossini. I also can't say I love his pronunciation of some words... it screams "English-speaker" at times.

El vibrato no es un defecto. Es algo que forma parte de la peculiaridad de una voz. Conchita Supervía, extraordinaria mezzo española de principios del pasado siglo XX, tambien lo tenía. A bit too much of a vibrato. Due to that there is a real danger that he sounds like a bleating goat at times. No squillo which is what an outstanding tenor should have to evoke goose bumps.
