SFBT-3: Posing the reference figure for drawing

Following up from my unboxing of the Dolkus Special FullAction Body Type-3 here's a good testing of the reference doll's possibility, 10 different poses which you could yourself draw from if you choose. The artists reference figure is great and you should certainly check it out if you're looking for an articulate model to guide your art and help your anatomy especially if you're working with perspectives that are often unusual.

+Sai NX Thanks Sai. I think that's probably just due to the creepy voice I gave it. The posable eyes might have a little to do with it too but that's only because they're so realistic for a reference doll.

True. I still love this reference figure. It's great for poses. I am getting the itch to also get one of the ones for muscle reference too now as well. Those super detailed ones. Hmmm. Just because it would look awesome in the studio too ;)

I'm still curious if you noticed any loosening of the joints? I know in my experience joints get pretty loose when used a decent amount. But given that this is meant for that, I would hope not.

Not had any problems here. It's been a solid rig so far - No complaints at all :)

You're lucky! Within about 3 hours the main shoulder joint was unable to keep the arm up on mine... Everything else works ok, but now I'm almost too nervous to move the darn thing... I'm looking for something to make joints stickier now. How ironic is that.

I researched this art doll quite a lot and found no complaints. Looks like you had some bad luck. Did you get in contact with your supplier or Dolkus directly? Did you use any type of lubricant on the joint at any time? If you need to make a plastic joint on a model/doll stickier you can lightly scuff-up the ball & joint with sandpaper. Take the shine off off the plastic and it will help the joint grip. Hope that helps.

+Eileen Massarello I did chat with them. Yes. They were great to deal with but the instructions are so detailed and the service was so good that I don't think you'll have any need to contact them. I would recommend buying direct rather than third party.

My doll came partially unassembled wondering if I should send it back

Perhaps it was bashed around in the post. Maybe it just needs clicking back together. I have taken mine apart and reassembled it before so I know it is possible. As long as it is not broken then you can do this yourself quite easily if you feel up to it. It should be self explanatory but if you do need any specific advice I'd suggest emailing the support team for help!

Yeah, I saw that before it launched. It's really for animators but it is not anatomically correct and it's more for poses so animators to move them little by little. Not for drawing. It is good for that though. BTW. I have just put out a new video. Spread the word!!

They are pretty good but a little bit small for me. Especially if you want to light them. It depends if you are using them for something like comic book panel work or more polished digital paintings. I've got a video on the male version of this too. Having used these and the Body Kun figures I will say that I think they're the next step up.

Looks great, the design feels very anime but at over a 300 dollar price tag it's a bit too much. Great review!

+Jeff Delgado (jdelgado!) Thanks Jeff :) I don't draw Anime style and can look PST it when using the doll. It certainly doesn't spoil my enjoyment of how articulate it is. I understand that it's going to be a sticking point for a few artists out there.

You can't officially remove them but I'm sure if you were willing to do some 'remodelling' then you could do some awesome work. Depends on your skillsets!

I'm still on the look out for better versions. A lot of people like the Body Kun figures but they are a bit too small for me to love completely 100%.
