Looks great matt. One thing you can try for partridge and pheasant feathers is to mash the stem with some flat pliers. It can help prevent them from rolling on the shank. Great pattern, thanks for the tie. Cheers

Good call Darren. I even knew that trick, just didn't think of it this time. And you're right... some of these softer stems flatten pretty good. Thanks!

Matt, you are on a roll in anticipating the flies I plan to tie. Since we have have a camp near the West Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine, much of my freshwater tying has been oriented toward the insects prominent there. Caddis & stoneflies are major players. One of the flies I like most is the West Branch Caddis, originated by Eddie Reif of Bangor, ME. It’s very similar to this one. The dubbing is green, olive, black, brown or tan, & the down wing is a white tipped, wood duck or mallard breast feather. It differs in that it has a single brown hackle collar with no herl beneath. It’s also been quite effective on waters in MA. I suspect Lawson’s Spent Partridge Caddis would be just as productive.

That's a pretty cool fly Bob-- I had never heard of it (or seen it in any of my books) but I just researched and found this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqjHnap7rZ2sf9U. I think I could dig up some interesting history on this one so might try tying it for the channel. As far as anticipating your ties... I'm finding the same thing with Hugh Graves channel! I try to plan my ties out a few weeks in advance and several I've had planned, I wake up to discover he just tied it for his channel. Oh well... all is good. I'll just stick to my plan. I've gotten about three ties ahead since starting Lyle's "Simple Flies" series. Those are some seriously easy bugs. :-)

I need to get me some partridge feathers, I use wood duck a lot, but it’s not the same
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 4 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, partridge is a good one to have. I always recommend starting with a mixed pack of partridge feathers (in natural or dyed brown) and then if you find yourself tying a lot with them, pick up a whole skin. They're kind of pricey but you can make a LOT of flies with a full skin.

Nice pattern and helpful comments.I like your vids. But what size of trout do you try to catch with hook size 20?
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend! You would be surprised at some of the small bugs even the big trout eat. Particularly midges and smaller nymphs. I've landed a few brown trout bigger than 18-inches on a #18-20 zebra midge. You do have to be a little more careful when fishing the tiny stuff with really thin tippet, but they'll eat it!

Good Morning Sir Matt, love the fly 😊. A question Sir do Smoky Mountain flies always use grizzly and brown hackle? And do Adams flies originate from that area? Adams flies use alot of grizzly and brown hackle. I was just wondering Sir Matt. Another great video Sir. And yes I caught the shout out board, today it says Thank you friends, but honestly Thank You Sir Matt.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 4 жыл бұрын
Edward- thanks my friend! The Adams comes from Michigan, and not all Smoky Mountain flies use brown and grizzly but it seems an awful lot of them do. I'm not sure why but it has always been popular down there. :-)

So I'm guessing that the rabbit fur is also real? ☺
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely it's real rabbit fur! 90% of the dubbing most of us use is from real critters. Unless we need some funky, flashy synthetic stuff. :-)
