For your local conditions after watching plenty of your videos and riding quite a few of the boards that you have reviewed can I just say do whatever it takes to get yourself a CJ Nelson Outlier 7'er. It will crush your local conditions and you will be smitten. Feel free to contact me for fin recommendations for it.

Hey. Don't suppose you have any recommendations for private surf lessons at Sumner or Brighton? Thanks!

There are a few good people around. Would probably depend on your current level. If you are beginner learn to surf sumner are very good group lessons. If you want private or are more advanced I’m sure Aaron from learn to surf or one of the young guys would do one on one. I think Jack Tyro sometimes does lessons too. Cheers

Great review! Wondering if you’ve managed to give the Moe a try?

I haven't mate I would love too. Almost thinking that would have been that one on the thunderbolt actually. I was just bothered by the 7'2" length. I'm short so 7 is confy to duck dive but to be fair the nose being slightly more narrow it probably duck dives just as good if not better than the Skindog. Eyed the Moe up heaps and shop feedback is that it's one of the boards that works in a really wide range of conditions. Unfortunately we don't have demos here and I have to pay for them the same as anyone else that's not sustainable with the thunderbolts they're very expensive. Cheers.

what single fin are/were you running with the 7'0 Ova? - keen to hear your views on template and size
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk Жыл бұрын
Havent tried it as a single fin but I would say something like a Kai salas 7" maybe even 7.5 they usually feel nice. Possibly even the josh hall captian fin co 7.5" if you want a little more surface area. Fins tend to be quite a personal preference thing but to get ball park I would use a 7-7.5" fin with a decent dit of surface area and play aroiund from there. Maybe even 8" if you wanted. The Kai salas ones always feel nicely balanced and perform pretty nicely. I would personally stay away from the fcs2 style clip in on the single fin they tend to fall out. Get one with a screw plate set up. Flying diamonds to the Kai salas model in 7 and 7.5" Hope that helps. Cheers.

How you getting on with the ova ? I’m torn between a 7’0 ova or 7’2 moe.
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk Жыл бұрын
Hi yeah I’m actually looking to sell my ova unfortunately. It’s a nice board but at my hight I’m actually finding it a bit hard to duck dive with that wider nose which is annoying as it’s not actually that thick in the nose. I think it would be ok for someone taller and or heavier but then might be a bit lower on volume for someone heavier too. I actually prefer the one I made myself. I think a 7’0” Moe at about 48 litres would be great but they don’t do them :-) lol that’s the problem with the thunderbolt. Love the tech but shapes are limited and you can’t custom order. Again I would say the Moe may be a but more of an all rounder and might go better in weaker waves and might also be more like a big guy short board if you want that standard fin set up. I would love to try the 7’2” but don’t want to be another 1899 down the pan to find out I still can’t duck dive that well enough too. If your more someone that’s used to a longboard that’s fairly performance and has a single and sided set up and looking for a family feel in a Mid length that will handle a wide range of waves and your happy with the volume you might really like the ova. I was also torn between the two. Wish I had got the Moe but very likely I would have the same issue with duck diving that floaty tech at 7’2” so I give up and stick to the one I made myself. Sing out if you have anything else specific I can help you with cheers.

@@lawson45uk cheers. I’ve just got hold of a 7’6 ova on loan so will have a go on that. I’m 6’5 and 100kg so will see how it duck dives at that length and volume. I want something that paddles well, gets Into the wave a bit earlier but you can still duck dive which is what the ova and the moe seem to do. It’s just deciding which and then what size. Also at the time of writing this FireWire are doing 30% off the ova. I had decided on a 7’2 moe but this has made things annoying shall we say. Also the 4+1 set up on the ova makes me think maybe that over the moe for versatility. Who knows 😂
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk Жыл бұрын
@@J0llygiant oh man that makes it even harder aye. 30% is a lot off!!! It's great You got hold of the 7'6" if you can duck dive that ok the 7'0" Ova and the 7'2" Moe should both be fine to duck dive. I think it's gonna be a lot easier at your Hight and weight anyways. I'm only 5'6" and got down under 80kg recently so that's a bit of work for me to get far enough over the front and get it down takes a bit too long. My own one I made is thicker but also much more pulled in at the nose. The local Lads know people with the Moe and they say it goes well when it's smaller as well. The Ova I would think possibly needs a bit more of a wave to get it working well but would definitely handle a solid wave too. I guess it's really down to the feel you want. Sounds like your same as us wishing you could demo the actual size before you shell out the money. Guess that good thing is that discount certainly makes it less risky to get wrong than the full ticket price.

@@lawson45uk for some feedback. I got out on the 7’6 today in some chest to 1ft overhead waves. I could duck dive it ok but after 5 or 6 in a row it started to get hard work. I think the 7’0 at 47L wouldn’t be enough volume for me so it looks like I’ll be going for the 7’2 moe.
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk Жыл бұрын
@@J0llygiant yeah nice. I think that would be the way I would lean for you too. Great you managed to get a go on the 7'6" makes sense that would help with your decision. I'm the same with duck diving on the 7 ova. It's just something with that nose size makes it hard work after the first few. I think the Moe might have a bit more balanced volume distribution and nose to tail width ratio too. Let me know how you get on. I'm still considering the Moe too but just worried I won't duck dive it. I had no issues at all on the 7'0" Sunday at 52 litres. Cheers

Hi mate. Yeah not too bad now thanks. Had a second disk prolapse in my back which required surgery so that’s taken me out for a while. Be a while longer before I can try to surf again too just playing it safe and getting myself back to normal life first. Cheers. Sold a lot of my shorter boards now too. 46 plus a couple of back surgeries I think it’s time to accept that it’s ok to let the board do a lot if the work so probably be the longboard and maybe a mid length ride here and there for me. Don’t need many boards anymore.
@Mark-hj7hi
@Mark-hj7hi Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with the longer board sentiments. I’ve got a Harley Ingleby longboard quiver and have no interest in going back. I tried the HI4, loved it, and found some really good deals on secondary market. Hihp is awesome in bigger (mostly slopey) surf. Diamond drive is a dinger too. I might sell the HI4 and just keep those two. Haven’t decided. But I should t keep all of em! Lol I hope your back is doing better. Surgery and recovery sucks. I too have back issues. Get RFA done about once a year. Multiple herniated disks. Will end up needing surgery eventually. So I get it. Back surgery is scary. And recovery is definitely not immediate. Would love an update vid. You have a lot of fans that enjoy your content and rambling. One of the most down to earth reviewers and it’s very refreshing. I wish you well man. And a recovery that puts you better than where you started.

Hey Dave! How did your Torq Chopper go?
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate. Yeah nice board actually just a little low on volume and a little bit too pulled in in the tail for me and for waves here. It did actually still paddle well for it's volume but it's quite a refined board in the 6'10". I should have probably gone for 7'2". Mate of mine bought it from me and he usually rides about 38 litres in his hybrid shorty he was a little concerned it might be too refined at first look but few rides in he loves it and rides it when he's riding at our local to even the odds with the longboards. He was surprised how well it paddled and said he could still turn it pretty vertical but he's a much better surfer than me. Cheers.

@@lawson45uk Thanks Dave, That gives me something to chew on! I'm looking for a duck divable mid length (I'm 60 6ft and 79kg). I am currently riding and loving my CJ Nelson 7ft ,2 +1 Outlier which is truly a magic board on fatish days (think 7ft Mini Simmons :) ) but exhausting and only semi successful duck diver
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk 2 жыл бұрын
@@richardeggins8727 Oh nice... Believe it or not that's another board I had eyed up multiple times :-) lol Heaps of volume in those things. Not surprised it takes a bit to duck dive. To be honest I'm surprised they even call it an Outlier. To me it doesn't have a huge amount in common with the other sizes of the board. Does look like a lot of fun and plenty of volume stacked away though. I liked the look of the 8'0" too but that's definitely going to be out of the realm of duck diveness ;-) If you usually ride single fin only or love twin fins you might like the Firewire Sunday. That's not much bother to duck dive and still has really generous thickness and volume. Not quite as much as the outlier but it still paddles great. I just didn't like the fin set ups so much on the Sunday for me personally. The Moe could also be a good choice too. Especially if your 6ft least your already op near the nose. Otherwise you could do custom order on something like lost party crasher or smooth operator or something depending on what suits your style. It's always a hard balance to have all the volume you want and still sink it easily and the more pointy the nose or tail gets the more of a wave it needs to get going.

@@lawson45uk Yeah the Outlier is an Outlier in the Outlier range...but it is a true sleeper and allows me to do as closer an approximation of Devon Howard as I'm ever going to achieve LOL
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk 2 жыл бұрын
@@richardeggins8727 lol yeah I hear you mate. The 7 outlier is much more of a usable shape for smaller or weaker waves. The bigger two are beautiful rails and lovely sleek pulled in tails and racy foil but I suspect you need a clean and nice wave to get them going. What I was meaning is the 7'0" is such a different board to the 7'6" and the 8'0" I'm almost surprised it's not called a different model. If you were a light weight talented young hipster and had seen the 7'6" and thought this would be beautiful in a 7'0" you would be wondering if they gave you the wrong model when it came. Same the other way round. If you seen the 7 and ordered an 8 expecting a volume paddle beast you would be wondering what happened 😂
