The government should provide basic amenities in Nigeria before asking for any tax. The cost of running business in Nigeria is high already. Also, there is no accountability in our national treasurer. The poor will be the ones to suffer if this bill is implemented

This person’s point doesn’t make sense, suggesting a family shouldn’t cook because they’re poor. As Nigerians, we need practical plans like tax reforms to move forward. Waiting for perfect conditions before acting could mean waiting forever.
@OnifadeOladeji-oq6ix19 күн бұрын
With 20% as income tax and 5% VAT, I think the tax reform bill is a good way to go.We should all do family planning and work smart and hard. Each state should be self-sufficient. In the North few are educated and the number of dependents are large, that is why they are objecting to the bill. If we don't have any natural resources, are we not going to run the economy.it's time for every hand to be on deck and support the present administration to take country to the promise land. Religion can't put food on table. Deal with the insurgency, embrace and encourage western education and you will see if the North will not become a force to be reckoned with. The era of freebies is gone and it's time to invest heavily in infrastructure facilities otherwise we may not get it right.
@akindeleakinbayo239019 күн бұрын
You need to study it very well, 20% income tax is better than the present, but there is a "Trojan horse" of VAT increment to 10% in 2025 and further to 15% in subsequent years, that will make a mess of the gains in d proposed 20% income tax.
@mangracedresultscentre751818 күн бұрын
@@akindeleakinbayo2390that projected increment should be hurt or delayed till we get the positive impact of this bill. My fear is the implementation and the measure as spoken by the Wali guy The issue is that, we must do something about this and ensure we all support the newness in the administration as necessitated by the current challenges...
@OmoIbadan215 күн бұрын
Sir why are you so focused on the North. The tax bill if implemented in haste without a strategic phasing in will see the tanking of 35 states. The only state that benefits is Lagos. All states including south west (excluding lagos) , south east , north and south south suffer because practically all corporate/commercial activities occurs in Lagos. If lagos benefits, Tinubu benefits because his company Alpha Beta collects taxes in lagos and his company makes up to 5% from each collection. Tax reforms are needed strategically. Tax increases right now is unnecessary as companies are leaving nigeria and people are suffering. Instead cut federal spend on planes, corruption, bribes,presidential trips, judiciary 300% salary increase, new judiciary housing, cut the size of Tinubu's administration, vice presidential planes... The federal govt and Nigerians must be compelled to reduce dependency on imports and buy Nigerian products!
@akindeleakinbayo239015 күн бұрын
@OmoIbadan2 I want to make only one correction, FIRS collects VAT and is distributed to sates through FAAC. Alpha Beta will make not be involved.

His talking about disadvantages of tax in theory forgetting that tax is not voluntary but compulsory. In real life and globally no one wants to pay taxes but it's a compulsion and main source of funding governments expenditures. Taxes is always by force. Moderation can only be applied.
@omoredeaghahowa421313 күн бұрын
To me , he is having a great deal of the issue from the legal perspective that is lovely, but not dealing with the taxation part. Taxation is very broad and we need both the legal perspective and the finance part. The VAT part he spoke about was fine but it is actually more than what he put out. Well may be time factor. The tax reform needs to be viewed holistically and grey areas should be discuss with practical examples. One thing, he said that stood out is records. But, the reform cannot actually correct all facets at once, it has to be a work-in-progress document that will be refine as time passes by. One good part of the reform is that the tax system should be truly progressive and perceived to be. The rich and super rich should be made to pay proper tax, that will go a long way, while the base for the low income earner should be increased so that they have more income for life necessities. We all seems to speak more on the VAT part, that should be properly addressed and let us not forget the administration part (Tax Collection ) this has been more of a problem to the economy than the tax it self. There are instances where the Tax collectors are richer than the country. This should stop. Is it really possible????? Time will tell.

His criticism of the presidential chat doesn't make sense. If you want a detailed analysis of a specific department, you should get that from that department. The president will necessarily give only a high-level analysis of any one effort. You also cannot speak to the average human(person) in a way that doesn't patronize them if you want to connect meaningfully, because as unfortunate as it is the average person does not have the intellectual breath to appreciate the finer details. His criticism of the anti corruption effort is also wrong, there is nothing like fighting corruption directly. As the saying goes: show me a 10-foot wall and I will show you an 11-foot ladder. You make more hay by removing the pressures that make people want to climbthat wall than you do trying to raise it to 12-feet. S you can only fight it indirectly and you do it by reducing the incentives for it. As long as people want something enough they will always be able to get it. Remember that the potential corrupt folk are also people with the same brain as the enforcers, and in many cases, they are enforcers themselves. You deter undesirable behaviors, fighting them directly is just a backup, it never actually solves anything. He acknowledges this when he blames hunger for the misbehaviour, because getting rid of the hunger gets rid of the incentive to behave the way they did. EDIT: His criticism of VAT is also faulty. The percentages aren't a big deal because labour costs in Nigeria are far cheaper so the cost of goods and services is also cheaper. Consequently, 10% of those goods and services are also more affordable than the same percentage elsewhere. So increasing VAT to 10% doesn't mean we are charging global rates. This is an odd oversight to make. I don't have a clear enough picture on the CIT issue, so I'll reserve judgment.
