My impression of Paul and his responses in this conversation is that Mr. Paul knows freedom. I have realized that the most captive folks in Nigeria are in the political class. In fact, in a country where the number one citizen can not access basic healthcare within the shores of his country but has to rely on Europe, there are no "Masters." Mr. Paul is a true Master, that's why he could have this disposition in the face of evident loss of material value. But, because he knows the value he lost was created by him, and he knows what it takes to create value is not necessarily material but mental, he can get over the pain and continue on his journey. I think the political class in Nigeria is heavy with people who don't appreciate the effort it takes to create value because many of them never really embarked on that journey. They operate from a different mental model, which is reinforced by the system that doesn’t have any place for accountability. Otherwise, how can you explain to people who have the capacity to demand accountability that you made a decision that destroyed over 50 million dollars of investment, scrapped away 4,000 jobs and sunk 10 billion Naira in Tax revenue, without any immediate replacement of these?

Lesson to Nigeria investors. For you to invest hugely in Nigeria, you have to go through foreign partners to sign a BIT ( Bilateral Investment Treaty) with the FG because if the Govt have to demolish your investment, you will be suing in International Court of Justice to recover every dollar invested. Like one Chinese company is doing to Ogun state Govt and seizing FG aircraft for failing to pay. That’s the only otherwise one day, one Govt will come and destroy your investment just because they wanted to create something out of the blue.

I wasn’t tired for a second listening to him. On lighter note, I can’t imagine investing £10m in any African country

Well done, Paul great interview. It did not need to be this long though as the interviewer repeated quite a number of questions! I am convinced this very unfortunate incident will present a lot of learning and as you've already said, diversification/knowing your environment and networking with relevant individuals in a country where you have business is also vital especially in a growing vital economy. I sincerely hope that the government listens to this interview and acts justly and fairly. Lots of business and life lessons here.

Unfortunately people still won't have sense. They'll still go invest outside their state/region. I had fallen in love with Lagos and Abuja. I looked forward to settling in either city. 15years ago I lost interest. Intact my return to Nigeria will be to my island hometown in bayelsa. I'll like to have a place in port Harcourt too.

It’s not a tribal issue. You’ve no idea how many indigenous businesses were affected by this demolition.

@michaelnusa-yakubu4656 Well, it's not about tribe I hear. Still, people need to go invest in their respective home states.

A very decent and empathic business man who still has a soul for humanity. GOD bless him and his future endeavors. He's only crime was that GOD created him an Igbo man. After listening to him, you'd be taking a huge risk investing in Lagos, especially if you are Igbo.

Recently, I spent $28M over 3 years to successfully modernize a city technology system in North America. There were 23 corporations including the Police and Fire departments. And I dealt with 14 Labor Unions. Why am I telling you this? I grew up in Ebute Metta, Lagos and schooled in Nigeria. The experience I had leading this project, opened and exposed me to how the government should work and what to look out for before any spend on infrastructure. KPMG or Deloitte or EY or PWC's reports are not enough...maybe good for lenders and investors but being streetwise is very key. That in my own opinion was missing in Landmark's decision to build the demolished masterpiece I had a very good chance to experience. Thanks for sharing...

@YXEigbolifestyles Could you please explain what the country's regulators required of you / what you did; What Nigerian regulators required of Landmark/ what he did? Let's be transparent and learn together.

@angelicakweku5293 Are you familiar with PEST or PESTEL (political, economic, social, technological + environmental and legal) analysis? Everything Paul talked about falls under one of these. But the one thing the analysis misses is the actors. Very critical in the case of Nigeria both in business and government. The special thing I did was to study their systems and the expected outcomes and used the available tools to engage. The government didn't do anything special. There were good enabling laws as you find anywhere but again it came down to the actors or human system. They make or marr outcomes of any plans you have or investment you make. That's what being "streetwise" means.

You be surprised to see that he is subtly and clanishly defending the Nigeria and Lagos govt on their actions on Paul's project. People calls Nigeria a zoo and a shit hole, but we wonder why. I pray Nigeria doesn't happen to me @@angelicakweku5293

Nigeria is a unique space for business venture that other theories of doing things don’t work at. For instance, could it be that some powers that be wanted in on the business but instead of asking for a piece of the cake, decided to clear the cake, hoping to bake their own cake in that space too while building the bridge? Maybe the Landmark Boss should have given the powers that be, a share of the cake when he starting baking the landmark cake from beginning… but also, is that not bribery and corruption that we talk about as the problem of Nigeria? This Is sad!

Bro thank God for you. That's it. Landmark would need to compromise a lot and maybe extorted to keep whatever they had and another government drunk in power could undo all of their doings.
