fun fact, Bibby, Teki, Lil Nine were southern rappers/gang members who were in fact all shot dead prior to the song's creation and also shortly after the songs release Spinabenz went to jail where he was physically beaten, extorted, and humiliated on an IG Live video posted by "his rivals"/people connected to the names mentioned in the song, i can see why people were upset with 1000 Miles use in this song. and i personally find it absurd that Venessa Carlton specifically calls out "white people" and points to "white supremacism" in her tweet responding to the backlash, like these dudes are literally Name Dropping Actual Dead Rivals Murdered in Gangland Shootings.

One thing about the slang "smoke" here. It could mean they killed them (which they probably did) but in context "smoking on" someone is a slang about celebrating their death generically. You don't need to have been involved directly to be "smokin on" someone. It's a disrespectful way to say you're happy they're dead. All the people named are real people killed in a gang war, but they weren't nessessarily killed by anyone in the video.

When they say “ who I smoke” they aren’t saying they killed them. They are making fun of the people that are dead. If they are literally smoking a joint or something they will name after someone from the other gang to make their enemies mad. A lot of rappers do it, not that is good or bad. Also you can’t bring a real gun on a golf course, that’s the purpose of the toy gun

The song is on J Byrd Green and Yellow and there's two versions on his channel. Lil Wayne has Green and Yellow also on his channel. It's a Green Bay packers song J Byrd wrote about the Packers, and they actually won the super bowl that year, it says Green and Yellow packers theme song on Lil Wayne's video Idk I didn't even look at the dates they were uploaded although that doesn't mean that is when it was written.

Lawyered the hell out of it. 💗💗💗💗💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾 Honestly the sample seems off as far as the vibe but I guess that was the idea (like you said, the drastic contrast in vibes & messages from one song to the next). I could understand both sides of the argument (Carlton's and opposition's) and say while I do understand artists "showing artists love" by supporting in that way... plus hopefully she got paid... a lot... for it... please lawd let her have gotten ShhhTOOPID paid for that... AND the other side of it where they were kind of milking a popular beat to further blow up a track that might not have been notable because the market is flooded with it (as well as jails and other places who get paid to play in those stats) because the beat does knock. But... just not my style of lyrics. Especially for the whole "spirit" of the original/Carlton version. But, hey, Mikey Jackson flipped the word "Bad" so.. Que sera, C'est la guerre. The thing that got me was in the response tho... The link (essay). I read thru a chunk of it, interesting terms there, and from what I get she's saying (in her response with the essay as backing?) is that she's in support of helping a portion of the artist community who's been taken advantage of, and those attacking her for doing what she chose to do with her own creation are somewhat hypocritical... in a way they'll download the track for free in a sense, and spit the lyrics all day like it was their family who did the song, but also want to keep her song clean for themselves and even distance themselves from the artists she was "helping"? Not sure if that was it exactly but kinda what I got from it? I should tweet her to see wth she was really getting at. lol. ANYWAYS, still, ok, saying you support the art is one thing. Kudos. But supporting it because of how it's pimped, so kind of guilt or jaded sympathy is kinda sad. I remember hosting open mic shows and asking artists what the songs were about and why they did it, just so the crowd knows who's saying what and why. If you're going to pump it into your brain and soul and dance in the spirit of it, you might as well do the math. Saying, "It's not fair that this portion of the artist community is being played, the very people taking their style and 'soul' are the same ones breaking it and keeping it bottled up... having their cake and eating it too, so I'll let them be creative with my art." is commendable, yeah, but at the same time kinda lame. By them taking her song and doing THAT song then she's not supporting anything really but the very thing she's speaking out against. It's like wearing a BLM tee to a Starbucks on Rodeo. I wonder if she actually DID A SONG WITH THEM as opposed to just a sample, to be in the room, in the studio, to feel what's being said, and being in support of that, and being an artist understanding she as a co-collaborator [should] have some creative input as far as the message and direction, i wonder if it would have been a different song and even what type of song would have come out. Maybe one she'd be more in support of. Telling a dog brainwashed to think it's a rock that you're sorry it's been brainwashed into thinking it's a rock, and then giving it a leash ain't gonna make it think and act like anything other than a rock. You just armed it with a tool to further its retardation if you want to look at it that way. I gotta look more into that Phil Collins & B.O.N.E. track (the behind the music kinda stuff) but even there you see the effect of the track and the collab. You could look at how a lot of sampled artists songs were made into FIRE tracks for trash songs (lyrically, spiritually, mentally, but economically and in the game of social-politricks very lucrative), and even if the artists giving the blessing were a bit naive due to whatever money or emotion triggered the thought to do so, the industry took the songs and fed them to the streets who sucked them down like all others... into the void and forgotten in less than a season paving the way for the next. I guess get your money and get out while you can. I dunno.
