Want to ban TikTok? Fine! But don't give sweeping powers to bureaucrats and make us criminals. The bipartisan RESTRICT Act is terrible for all Americans!

@chuck 8094 There is a shit ton of moves that can and should be made by concerned citizens before "rebellion". If your first thought is to react with violence, remove your self from thought activities immediately.

@@Pwnopolis It's a predictable reaction, when people find out they're in a rigged game they can't get out of. Do not forget, jail time/forfeiture are coming from an institution which, per our setup, has the legal monopoly on violence. Violence will be used to put you in that jail, if there's even a hint of necessity to do so. Said institution also has plenty of examples of abuses already, some egregious, with minimal consequences to the abusers in most cases. State is also actively pushing to reduce the capability of that last resort measure, through "gun control" that "protects children". Though this is more a product of a generic power centralization which any government has selective pressure to pursue rather than any organized conspiracy, it can still be useful to remember/remind that rebellion...while a last resort option...IS an option.

They don't care about us using VPNs as long as the VPN server is within the United States. Government can then just get the information they want from that server owner. Anything that you send through a U.S. VPN server is already de facto compromised by the federal government. The real thing they're cracking down on is VPNs hosted outside of the United States - servers outside of their immediate jurisdiction. Let's create a likely scenario. Let's say a GOP candidate wins 2024 on the platform of a total ban on abortion and they follow through and the federal government has a ban on abortion. Let's say somebody wants to look up how to force a miscarriage - if they don't use a VPN they'll be caught immediately. If they use a VPN hosted within the U.S. if there's suspicion that the user was involved in a miscarriage then the feds will look up their internet history, subpoena the server, and get the data proving they made that search. Busted. But let's say the person is smart and uses a VPN hosted in Canada. Canada isn't going to cooperate with with the US government in handing over data if it results in prosecutions for abortion so they tell the U.S. government to kick rocks. The user is this protected from prosecution. Now if they make using a VPN from outside of the U.S. a crime then the feds may not be able to prosecute for the abortion but they'll still throw the user in prison dor the eeeeeevil crime of accessing information the government doesn't want them to know and then press the user to flip and rat out others. That's a very likely scenario as some governments around the world have attempted similar things. Dozens of other nearly identical situations are possible as well. What if the government has a few pharma lobbyists bribe some politicians and is enforcing a monopoly on a life-saving medication such as insulin. If you want to look up how to make bathtub insulin to bypass paying $1,200 a month to simply not die then you're out of luck because if you try to use a VPN to not get busted you'll just get busted for that and go to federal prison. Or maybe you're trying to look up information that makes Dear Leader President Whoever look bad that is being suppressed and you get arrested like they do in China where VPNs are also illegal. Or maybe you're just using it to watch Netflix but you're on some government official's shitlist so they use this as an excuse to throw your ass in prison.

All laws that grant regulatory power to the executive branch should be repealed. They are un-American, and certainly violate the spirit of the Constitution. Emergency executive powers should only be able to have enough duration in order to convene Congress in order to discuss the passage of legislation that directly addresses the specific issue. If they don’t pass it, then there is nothing to enforce.

I’m pretty sure that the bill is aimed at larger corporations more so than individuals and that the bill’s text apparently says that technology used to interfere in elections, with deceptive intent, or a national security risk would be the ones being targeted. I agree that it would be a slight overreach in authority if it passes, but we may not have to worry just yet. People from both sides of the political aisle may be raising similar concerns just as much as they are (or at least were) supporting this bill.
