Lax Vox stands for Free Voice. Lax Vox or Tube singing or speaking means using a straw or tube so the vocal folds can vibrate more freely. The principle is already introduced in 1904 as a method by Spiess. Marketta Sihvo and dr. Ilter Denizoglu re-introduced this in 2007 in Groningen, The Netherlands.
We at Universal Voice Institute started using Lax Vox from 2007 and have been developing Lax Vox into a solid program for Singers and Speakers.
How to use Lax Vox:
We use a 33cm long and 1 cm in diameter tube of Silicone material. (You can order the lax vox tube trough our website). (Children need a shorter tube, around 28cm)
You need a bottle of water filled half way with water.
You bring the Lax Vox tube in the water for about approximately 3 cm for female voices, 4 cm for male voices. The tube goes for around 1 cm between the lips in your mouth.
You are then in a “U” lip-position.
How to start:
First blow your air through the tube in a quiet pace, around 6 to 8 bubbles per second.
After gently blowing air slowly add the vowel “U”.
Say the “U” vowel low and maintain a loudness of 4 (mezzo piano) on a scale of 0 till 10.
Try to say the vowel “U” in the lax vox tube for as long as comfortably possible.
Repeat this for about one or two minutes.
Check that your cheeks are loose and vibrating with the bubbles.
You can play a bit with the depth of the tube in the water. Less deep is easier, deeper in the water is a bit more effort.
In a second exercise you can glide up and down in a relaxed comfortable range.
Not too high gently up and down maintaining your loudness level 4.
Then you can gradually go higher or lower.
Singers can use the lax vox to extend their range in all kind of warming up exercises.
Simply sing exercises using the lax vox for as long as you like.
Sing not too loud, mezzo forte, so you can easily stretch your vocal folds and make easy registers transitions, going from mode 1 to mode 2 and back.
Your voice will start working free and easy. The true vocal folds are in a balanced vibrating mode. The sub glottal pressure is more balanced with the supra glottal pressure because of the pressure the tube generates in the water. Therefor the vocal folds stretch easily, so you will be able to sing from low to high with any audible transition. You are bridging the two registers, the two modes of your chest and head voice.
The bubbling of the water will massage your vocal folds slightly with around 6 to 8 pulsations a second. The tissue and muscles of your larynx will restore and benefit from this relaxing massage. So it is one of the best recovering methods after big concerts, a lot of loud speaking or singing, after a football match or any kind of vocal work that you might have done during a day.
For speech therapists this is one of the best tools to restore damaged voices, hoarse voices, breathy voices or voices which need therapy after surgery.

Hi, thanks for the video! One question, you seem to have much more water than 4 cm in that bottle! I just measured and marked my bottle to 3 and 4 cm and it's very little! Also, is it okay to feel like a strong sort of vibration on the cords? It doesn't feel uncomfortable but it is a very weird sensation. Thanks!

3-4 cm is not the level for the water, it is the depth of tube in the water.

If i live in a remote area that it is impractical to have this special straw, will it be a problem if i apply a regular straw or hose of the same diameter? will that be dangerous or will that be simply less effective? Thank you very much

Yes, I guess you're blowing very hard. You shouldn't need to put a lot of pressure, make sure to relax the muscles in your cheeks until they kind of swing. This vibration should then go all the way into your throat and massage your voice lips including the vocal chords.

I guess this only shows no technique is without risks. You should see a voice therapist, they’re the best to guide you through exercise. Also, if you have any wound the exercise is not recommended.

All the straw exercises are ony going to make you a tense speaker and a tense singer. You are teaching your muscle memory to stop air at your throat mostly, instead of your diapgrahm. If you blow air into any kind of resistance device (straw, tightly pursed lips, water-straw device, baloon etc.) you need to overpower the resistance. To overpower it, you will use higher air pressure. In order to create higher air pressure, you will be forced to squeeze the air. Throat is, where it happens. So, you remove all the benefits of the open throat singing, like resonance. You always will sound tight. To strengthen the diapgrahm, you need to figure out how to isolate it. Learn to breathe in and blow out your breath only by your diapgrahm without any other tension included. You will be suprised how quickly it will open up your voice. (Do not overexercise the diapgrahm, it can be dangerous to exhaust it. Exercise carefully.)

So are you saying that we cannot play something that requires very high air pressure, for example a trumpet, without squeezing air from our throats?? Even though nobody who plays such instrument does that? The squeezing happens at the tube, because of the back pressure. Your diaphragm is what is doing the pushing.

Speech pathologist in training here: This is incorrect. To speak or sing you always need to overcome a resistance, which you create within your voice lips. If there was no resistance your voice lips would be paralyzed. No air pressure opening the voice lips aka overcoming the muscular resistance = no voice No pressure created by air from below = voice lips closed In order to not harm voice lips, which include the vocal chords, you need to be able to create a regulated airflow. If the airflow is too soft, you'll have a very quiet voice, if it is too hard and ending abrupt you'll have the lips smashing and harming each other. Plus you won't be able to hold a tone for long. LaxVox helps regulate that airflow as you can visually see it in the bubbles + the vibration through the tube is like a massage for voice lips and vocal chords. Excuse any grammar mistakes, I'm from Germany.
