I was particularly amused at the part where Kjartan tells Gudrun that instead of going with him, she should just wait for 3 years until he returns. I can imagine a headline, Dating and romance in the 10th century: How long should you wait between dates? Just apply the 3 year rule, haha. Thanks for the video!

The weird thing is this is far from the only saga where that happens. Gunnlaug did that too - he wanted to marry Helga but also wanted to prove himself, so he secured a promise of three years time. In Gunnlaug's case he was actively detained by a king. It's kind of a literary device, I think.

@@hotspurre yeah, but I can totally imagine that these examples have some basis in reality, considering that marriage was an affair with the utmost importance back then, something one would "labour for" for years if that was necessary.

Oh, certainly, and one could also imagine that the idea of traveling to another country and proving yourself was also a big deal and a sign of "drengskapa" (manliness.) So you have this competing desire to marry this woman you've liked for years, but you want to prove yourself before you settle down.
