Hey Tyler and Isaac 👋 ! Yeah, Lay is a native Mandarin Chinese speaker, so this would have been in Mandarin Chinese. And I found out a couple of things when I was watching Jeff Avenue’s reaction to Flying Apsaras yesterday. Jeff is a former professional dancer, so obviously knows a lot about that side of things. Jeff talked about how this choreo has elements of the Chinese traditional dance style. And Jeff also said that he had read on Twitter that apparently Lay wasn’t happy with how the MV turned out, which why we currently only have the visualizer and the dance practice so far. I’m not sure you’ve watched Lay’s song Lit yet? Coz Lit is a must watch, the scale of it, it’s honestly like watching a movie, I’ve lost count how many times I’ve rewatched that. And NAMANANA is my favourite song of Lay’s, I think.

This kind of transitional dance style is called “Dunhuang Dance”. It is inspired by a thousand year of wall painting in Dunhuang (which is the dessert in his visualiser).

Lay is an ambassador for China, so one of his goals is to share Chinese culture with the world. One way he is doing this is by creating his own style of music which he has labeled M-pop. M-Pop stands for Mixed-pop, which means he mixes traditional Chinese elements and sounds with mainstream pop and hip-hop beats and styles -- combining old school Chinese culture with new modern hip-hop and contemporary beats and styles. He is native Chinese, so his first language is Mandarin, hence why "Flying Apsaras" is in Mandarin. Lay is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. When it comes to Lay's solo work he does it all -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he even creates all his own beats, he has a large part in the choreography and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. It is also all financed by him. Th choreography for "Flying Apsaras" has also been designed to highlight Chinese culture by using a lot of traditionally Chinese dance moves and styles. Lay is the Chinese member of EXO and he was originally meant to fill the same role in EXO-M -- the Mandarin Chinese sub-unit of EXO -- that Kai fills in EXO-K -- the Korean sub-unit of EXO. Kai is one of the top two BEST dancers in Korea (Taemin being the other top dancer) and Lay is one of the top dancers in China. Like all of SM's top dancers, Lay is super dedicated when it comes to dance and music. Within the Chinese music industry and dance community, Lay is regarded as an industry expert that pretty much all other dancers and musicians look up to. Lay has even started his own Idol trainee company in China -- with SM's blessing -- called Chromasome where he plans to use his talents to influence the world entertainment industry and to pass his skills and knowledge on to the next generation, etc. When Lay puts his mind to something he goes all in and immerses himself in it with a goal of becoming the best at it. That is why he is regarded as an expert at so many different things, because he becomes so involved and studies and practices so much that he eventually overtakes his teachers.

Lay did spend a lot of money (heard that the budget is over 1 million usd) on the mv. He flew 150 staff members and dancers to the desert and a well known world heritage site called Mogao Grottoes, also known as Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, to shoot the mv. The Flying Apsaras are often considered a symbol of the Mogao Grottoes, painted in Mogao caves 1600 years ago. In the dance practice, Lay incorporated many traditional dance moves and gestures painted on the caves. The reason for him to release only 40s is because, as he said, he’s not fully satisfied with the rest of the mv. I really hope he’ll drop the full version soon, but I respect his decision. As we all know, Lay never settles for less.

He always proud of his culture and always promoting it and continue to learn everything as much as he could. He is known as a CHINA SHEEP. I am a huge follower and fan of him. Everything is in mandarin chinese with a mix of english. Lay's vision is to introduce Chinese music to the world by incorporating it with modern pop. Pls listen to the rest of the songs in the EP. There's only 3 left - Samadhi Real Fire, Ascetic Monk, and Shepherd Boy. You will see different sides of Lay. All of them he produced and composed tog with other artists. The dance was choreographed by Huang Xiao and Lay. Huang Xiao is a great dancer and choreographer who is part of Lay's team in street dance of China seasons 3 and 4. The dancers are from Huang Xiao's dance crew called Hello Dance. Do check out Street dance of china -- that program is LIT!

Thanks for the great reaction. As simplistic as the dance moves seem, it takes muscular control within the arms and hands and very difficult to sync. Solid practicing. Lay is trying to incorporate his culture in his music recently, which is bringing Chinese elements to the forefront. Since Lay is a producer, he is a perfectionist. He needs things precise, in his film making and choreo, and story telling is very important. Lay is not the trendy, commercial styles of today's scene..in mvs, music or dance. He is doing HIS thing, not kpop-ish anything, he is Cpop, or for the time being, Chinese traditions mixed with modern beats. I absolutely love traditional Asian music, but I'm not Asian. This song hits, with that ethereal feel of what an apsaras is, mythical female celestial beings, and Lay sings of dreaming of ascending into the sky like them....it's beautiful. Lay is a very hardworking man for the past 5 years..a dancer, singer, songwriter/composer, choreographer, producer, film maker, and has been an actor since 6 years old till today. He has been in the entertainment industry his whole life. And has established a very successful solo career in China for the past 5 years, with many albums, movies, producing, and now with his own production company Zhang Yixing Studios, he does everything. He is a very well known celebrity in China with a massive fandom, including Exols. He is one of the richest men in China. He was in Forbes magazine as "one of the most influential people" list, 3 TIMES...he has written a book about his kpop experience, he has a very successful modeling career on the side for high-end fashion, graced the covers of many fashion magazines over the years like Vogue, GQ, W, Elle, In Style...he owns his own jewelry company, and he just started his own company "Chromosome Entertainment", being the CEO of his agency, where he will train aspiring young talent in music, singing, dance and rap. The CEO Lee Soo-man of SM Entertainment was very proud and personally congratulated Lay, knowing like a proud papa that Lay grew up with Exo under SM's company. You cannot find a more hard working man like Lay. He is still the 9th member of Exo today. But cannot reunite just yet because of the political situations between the 2 countries...can only hope it could happen in the future if the situation ever gets better. Just thought this may be interesting to you if you are wondering what is Flying Apsaras. It refers to a cultural heritage (also an UNESCO site) in China - the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. These caves were built with Buddhist temples with sculptures, paintings and architecture that started from AD 366 and more arts were kept building into it in all centuries that followed in the whole Chinese history, so it’s regarded as a gallery of the historical evolution of culture, garment and art in China. The Flying Apsaras is one of the key themes from the paintings preserved in these caves, and in China there is a specific dance genre called ´flying apsaras’ transforming the movements and body gestures from these paintings into the real dancing (a lot of the hands movements in Lays dance must be inspired by that, especially @07:15, when he put one arm behind his head and join the other arm/head at the side-that was an iconic gesture from a flying apsaras painting when an apsara was playing a traditional Chinese instrument called Pipa but instead of holding the instrument at the front she was holding it behind her head) - and the Mogao Caves are in an oasis in the desert that’s why you see the whole set up is in the desert, dune, temples etc etc. And it’s a religious and culture crossroad on the Silk Road. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mogao_Caves
