If you're the owner of a company as big as SM entertainment, you would probably do the same. Don't get me wrong, I love Lay in EXO, but he definitely has more room to express his creativity as a solo artist. In EXO Lay is a great performer, great dancer, great singer. But solo, he is a great producer, choreographer, director, song writer on top of all those.

I would like to add that this goes for all other EXO members... It's more like a crime to put such talented people into a group and limit their performance. But that's the beauty of EXO, we all know that when so many great minds put into one place they usually mess up in order to showcase themselves but with EXO it's an exception. They all understand each other so well and collectively they shine bright as ever. In EXO they've certain position according to which they've to perform but when they go solo they explore all other areas and go limitless and perform best to their ability. Like kai, everyone thought that he's just a main dancer and an occassional filler but when he came up with his solo work he shocked everyone with his vocals.. Same with Sehun.. So many people are sleeping on him coz he was limited in EXO, and I can't wait for Sehun to come up with his own album and shock everyone to the core. Same with Xiumin and Chanyeol... They all are great artists and when they go solo then only people get to know what more they're capable of other than what they've been used to seeing them in EXO.

I just did quick research here. Apsara (English translation: nymph, fairy, celestial nymph, and celestial maiden) is well-known in the Khmer (Cambodia) culture but deeply rooted in ancient Indian mythology. It is a type of female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist culture. The Apsara figure is in the sculpture, dance, literature, and painting of many South Asian and Southeast Asian cultures. Apsara portrays as youthful and elegant (that depicts the elegant movement with the choreography), and superb in the art of dancing. It makes sense why Lay chose Apsara for Asian reference ((he have been referencing a lot of Chinese historical figures in the song like Luban (god of carpentry), Wanhu (who became the first "astronaut" in space, but got exploded and died), Kuafu (a giant deity who wished to capture the Sun but failed to do so), and Chang'e (moon goddess who steals an elixir of immortality from her husband because she wants to live longer)). Maybe he chose Apsara not only because he has this burning passion for dancing, but he wants to fly high "who are the ones who hold up the sun." Only the king can hold/stand up the Sun. Remember in Lay's Lit, he did say "I am the king" "I have the crown, I got the power you know it." This is another lowkey diss track towards haters. He referenced these gods and they all mean similar things. Lu Ban (the god of carpentry) has this common idiom: 班门弄斧 bān mén nòng fǔ - literally, “to brandish your axe at Lu Ban’s door." This is used to describe people who unwittingly boast their small achievements in front of those who've set the bar. It's like haters think they are the better dancer and saying that Lay is sucked at dancing or something for example. Wan Hu, who is being too ambitious of wanting to get close to the star, so he built this "rocket" chair for him to fly up to space, but ended up losing his life. Haters are like that, they are getting too greedy and selfish by dragging him down to prevent him from reaching the top and they thought that they can be on top over Lay, but ended up getting annihilated because haters gonna get their ass sued. Instead of building this failed rocket chair to fly up high, Lay uses dancing to "fly." Apsara dance is not easy to replicate or to dance to. It takes rigorous training that usually starts before the age of 10 and lasts for up to 15 years. This requires lots of strength forming in the legs to perform highly complex body movements as well as enough flexibility in the hands to bend their wrists and fingers in every direction with ease (like you don't have joints). Just like the ethereal spirits, they represent, Apsara dancers move very slowly, yet gracefully, resembling heavenly goddesses floating amongst the clouds. So basically, his dancing is like flying. The more he continues to dance, the higher he flies up to reach the Sun.

Just thought this may be interesting to you if you are wondering what is Flying Apsaras. It refers to a cultural heritage (also an UNESCO site) in China - the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. These caves were built with Buddhist temples with sculptures, paintings and architecture that started from AD 366 and more arts were kept building into it in all centuries that followed in the whole Chinese history, so it’s regarded as a gallery of the historical evolution of culture, garment and art in China. The Flying Apsaras is one of the key themes from the paintings preserved in these caves, and in China there is a specific dance genre called ´flying apsaras’ transforming the movements and body gestures from these paintings into the real dancing (a lot of the hands movements in Lays dance must be inspired by that, especially @14:33,when he put one arm behind his head and join the other arm/head at the side-that was an iconic gesture from a flying apsaras painting when an apsara was playing a traditional Chinese instrument called Pipa but instead of holding the instrument at the front she was holding it behind her head) - and the Mogao Caves are in an oasis in the desert that’s why you see the whole set up is in the desert, dune, temples etc etc. And it’s a religious and culture crossroad on the Silk Road. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mogao_Caves

Thank you for reacting. I really enjoy your analysis here! It's always interesting to see performer and dancer analyse his work. Totally agree with you about how he is never afraid to break the norm and shows his art and culture because his pieces are art! In this particular video he worked with the dance studio called 'Hello Dance' which he became close after he attended the 'Street Dance of China' programmed. They did an amazing job.❤️ Also, yes, we xingmi (Yixing's fan) are suffering because mister perfectionist doesn't release the full MV but at least we got a proper dance practice this time! 😂

If you like Chinese style infused dances, you should definitely check out some of the performances on street dance of China 4, a show that has Lay as one of the captains.

LAY is not only curios and attracted to learn any kind of dance style, but he is smart enough to mix it with traditional chinese rithm ,sound and instruments, creating something unique, never seen before. He is respectful and humble in front of every dancer he meets , "stealing" the best of their styles , not being afraid to experiment . In the present idol hunt happening in China, he raises above the others by promoting chinese culture and making him untouchable for any kind of slander or attacks from haters . As a music lover and a hard core Exo-L, I have great respect for him and double reason to be his fan.

Lay is definitely the best idol dancer for me. Honestly, his dance style can't even be categorized into "idol dancing" I think, because if Lay wasn't an idol he can easily be a professional dancer with how versatile and good he is. It was unfortunate that he wasn't able to show that when he was still active in the group but I'm glad he's freely trying out different dance styles now.

Lay is really my favorite dancer, his dedication for dancing, he learn so much about dancing, never stops learning, and always thriving. I need more people in this world can recognize his work, his music, and his dancing. So proud that he is EXO, full of talent and so rare

This song really is the embodiment of Chinese culture mixed with Lay's modern song mix. ~ even the choreographer Huang Xiao from Street Dance of China S4, also have the same philosophy and discipline as Lay (You can see him in the MV). I think they incorporated their dance with Buddhism even the hand gestures. The idea is insane since it's truly pure chinese history and you can't compare it to some kpop dances nowadays. So different but yet so cool!

Lay is AMAZING. He always improves and learn new style. Lay is one of judges on Street Dance of China, the contestant is all around the world and many of them is street dance champion & legends. He sure improved because of that show too! I’m so proud of him ❤️

Correction, Lay is one of the 4 captains of Street Dance of China Season 4, not judges ya. And yes, he is very happy make friends and and learned a lot from many of the world street dance champions and legends from the show. I am super proud of him seeing him consistently improving and growing!

Can you react/analyse Huang Xiao from "Street dance of China", he's the choreographer for this dance. I really want your take on his preformances (really any of them but my fave is "shuang" with Qiao Zhi)
