Kai Tian means Opening the Heaven in Chinese. In Chinese mythology, the universe was initially a chaotic, formless mass, like a giant egg. Inside this “egg” lived a being named Pangu. One day, Pangu woke up and determined to escape. He used a giant axe to strike the egg-like chaos, and separated heaven from earth. Eventually, Pangu grew exhausted and lay down. His eyes were transformed into sun and moon, ushering in the solar era, which explains Lay’s heterochromatic eyes in the MV. The “solar era” refers to a 12-year cycle, aligning with Lay’s 12th year since debut. Starting from January 1, it marks the beginning of his 13th year in the industry and the start of a new era - an era of Mpop. In the MV, the traditional Chinese instrument that produces a loud and bright sound is called Suona, which is a popular instrument for weddings, funerals, and various traditional Chinese ceremonies. The waist drum that Lay played is a traditional folk percussion instrument which is popular in northern China and is commonly used in Chinese performances and festivals.

So cool, thank you for sharing this. I was wondering what that axe lyric was all about. There are so many creative details in this work - lyrics, visuals, vocals, instrumentals it’s very difficult to to take everything in even after a few watches. There is always something new to notice everytime you watch/listen. Lay is a genius

In fact, there is a Chinese story behind Lay's mpop works. Like Lit is the story of an ancient Chinese king named Xiangyu, Behind KaiTian is the story of the Chinese mythological figure Pangu. The myth goes like this. Long long ago, heaven and earth have not been separated, the universe chaos. There was a giant named Pangu who slept for 18,000 years in this chaotic universe. One day, Pangu woke up suddenly. When he saw the darkness around him, he swung his big axe into the darkness before him. There was a loud noise and a dark mass drifted apart. What slowly rises becomes the sky; what slowly falls becomes the earth. After the separation of heaven and earth, Pangu was afraid that they would still meet. As the sky rose ten feet a day, Pangu grew taller and taller. For many years, heaven and earth gradually took shape, and Pangu was so tired that he fell down. After Pangu fell, his body changed greatly. His breath became the wind and clouds of the seasons; his voice became the rumble of thunder; his left eye became the sun. His right eye became the moon; his limbs became the east, west, south, and north poles of the earth; his skin became the vast earth; his blood, Into a torrent of rivers; his sweat, into the rain and dew that moisten all things. Very Chinese, with Tibetan/Mongolian throat singing, with perhaps an old Chinese shaman shaking that tambourine, evoking the spiritual world to stand aside, like a Tibetan monk. Lay is telling a story of splitting the Heavens and Earth, and elevating his life straight through, as he exceeds his own achievements through Mpop. He is here. He is powerful. Nothing can stop him bringing China to the world. Incredible. 💙🌺

I love the unique sound of the “suona” (traditional Chinese horn) in this song. I think Lay is the only one who dares to incorporate this loud instrument into a modern pop song. Really brings it to another level
