One thing that people get wrong about writing ambient parts is that they write too many notes. You got it exactly right on this video!

Yeah, ambient parts are generally drenched in reverb or other effects. You really can't play anything complex because the reverb/delay/etc. will carry over and clash with the next note. Besides, playing something "interesting" is not the point of an ambient part anyway. It's supposed to be subliminal and supportive.

I love layering guitars. In a song I was working on recently, I wanted the chorus to explode. So I recorded the basic rhythm guitar and put it in the center. But then I recorded several guitars playing skater punk-style octave harmonies. I panned those out left and right. All those guitars were distorted. After that, I wanted a bit more clarity, so I recorded a clean jangly guitar playing basic "cowboy chords." The tone sounded horrible by itself, but when added to the other guitars at a very low level it added just the right amount of brightness and note definition. It's probably the moment I'm most proud of in any song I've done.

This was seriously the best way you could have ever (and I mean EVER) communicated this piece of information. Great video, Joshua!

Forget layering guitars, this was a great lesson in composition and arrangement. Each part fits a role without stepping on one another. The only thing I couldn’t wrap my ear around was the tone of the synth you chose - at first it made your guitar part sound gated/djenty, which was cool, but then it felt more and more programmed in comparison to the rawness of the guitar part you tracked.

I'll try doing it in these steps. I already use the play on a different part of the neck trick, always trying to find space in the mix for the new parts. I'm not there yet though. I like prog
