People watching, especially those unsure about something shown in the video, should play with the Codepen on the description. Set Attack and Release to 0 and start playing with Threshold and Ratio. Also be aware that the red thing on top is the *envelope* that does the actual reduction. Looking at it makes it easier to understand Attack and Release, for instance.

People make compression to difficult. Compression lowers the high peaks of audio and brings the high peaks closer to the lower peaks. By doing that it lowers the volume of the high peaks. So now you have a squashed audio signal that the high peaks and low peaks are closer together. Now the 3rd part is the new squashed signal dB has been lowered. Now the new squashed signal must be raised back up with the high and low peaks closer together which is where make up gain comes in.

New trend is coming among music priducers not to use compression at all as it kills soul of music.
@mickiewriedt25 күн бұрын
In film music I rarely use compression, since a bigger dynamic range is often appreciated in cinema. But it’s often used in streaming music and similar to get the levels close to eachother, so it won’t be very quiet one place and loud another. Since most people listen to music on headphones and not in the cinema, a big dynamic range can be a problem. But I totally agree, that it does give life to the music, to not over compress

Compressor doesn’t make quiet parts louder. It is a complete misunderstanding of how compressor works and it is very harmful to give this information to beginners.
@mickiewriedtАй бұрын
I turns everything up, yes, but it turns down peaks beforehand. Do you not agree with the visual explanation?
@VinceKroshАй бұрын
@@mickiewriedt the visualization is correct, the explanation is wrong. You turn (or do not turn) things up yourself, by increasing volume (makeup). But that is not part of compression process itself. Compressor can only turn things down and you can see it on your graph. I’ve written my notes only because you mentioned deep dive (which is why I got hooked up to the video), but then misrepresented basic concepts. Same with threshold - it doesn’t always show where compressor will start kicking in, cause with the soft knee it might start much earlier. And some other stuff, which could have been okay, if the video wouldn’t be presented the way it were, sorry🤷♂️
@mickiewriedtАй бұрын
@ okay, I see your point. I thought I did make it clear, that compressor turns down peaks, and then makeup brings everything up afterwards. And the video was never meant to be really in depth look at the compressor, it was meant as a to the point look at how compression works, so everyone understands. I’m sorry I misguided you, that was not intentional! Thanks for the feedback, I will take it into account on new videos ☀️
@focusdecorating3637Ай бұрын
You dont know much about compression, sorry. Zero explanation about ratio, what it means. 4:1 = for every 4db over threshold the output will rise by 1db for example. Every compressor is different. And stock plugin compressors like those Ableton ones are filthy examples of compressors.
@mickiewriedtАй бұрын
For some people Ableton stock plugins is the only thing they have, and they work just fine. I know about the more technical parts of compression, but the point of the video is to get a fast and to the point overview of the effect, not get bombarded with numbers. In the end, I think it’s about what you hear. But thanks for watching and the feedback ☀️
