44:15 RE: The dolls and the daughter scene... The sheer amount of dolls indicates how overwhelmed he is by his daughter. He is a control freak, made obvious by his need to "fix" his wife and how he scolds his literal toddler about her horse drawing. Children, especially young children, need attention and care, and yet he can't handle it. His wife is already disabled and probably can't take care of their child easily without his help, and holds resentment towards her child because of the painter. He couldn't help his wife and he can't help his daughter. The people in his life are nothing but objects to him, and even though he cares for them in a obsessive way, he doesn't care for them as people, and so his daughter is reduced to the imagery of a doll. A fragile little porcelain doll. The scene of her running into the wall and her banging her head against her crib speaks the neglectful abuse the daughter deals with. At that age, she wouldn't have the vocabulary to convey her emotions so her frustration and anger is being let out by physical means.

Re: wife leaving reviews on his paintings Another way it can be interpreted is that he himself, due to a collapsing mind and excessive alcohol use, is writing his own self deprecating reviews. It could look like her jumped handwriting because he's piss drunk. I think that more aligns with the overall story considering how self-obsessed he is and the fact that the wife denies it. She's also going mad much in a very different way and she empathizes with him a lot more than he with her, so I don't think she wrote those reviews. You know who else knows that sets him off? Himself.
@FreddyDude16 күн бұрын
@@sophee1022 very interesting! It could really go either way I think. and maybe that's intentional. Towards the end it's heavily implied the wife planted a dead rat in his workshop, and she did say she would become the monster he thought her to be. But then again, we never see her criticising his art besides saying his paintings don't matter at all. Doesn't really sound like someone with the required knowledge of painting to critic it so profoundly. Thank you for your comment. It was very insightful.
@sophee102216 күн бұрын
@FreddyDude I totally agree. Obviously I empathize with the wife more, she asks herself how two people who live each other so fully could be reduced to this but I really don't think he ever loved her, not for who she is as a person. He loved her status as a musician and her beauty. The moment those two were gone, there was no love in his side to be had. I would also go crazy if I had to realize that about my own husband.
@DarlingMissDarling13 күн бұрын
@@sophee1022 seriously. It would be absolutely devastating. Especially during that time period, she'd have absolutely no escape aside from the one she made for herself. The other outcome for her, sadly, would have likely been the sanitarium

One of my favorite channels. Always happy to see a new upload. I really apreciate the backround given on the art that was shown. I adore these sorts of detailed analysies of anything but I especially enjoy ones on horror content. For me, horror is possibly the most viceral artform for its particular utility in translating the things that seem untangable into something tangable.

The rat queen is supposed to be a character in the Layers Of Fear universe and you see her in the dlc and in Layers Of Fear 2 and in the Layers Of Fear remake so i dont think that painting is supposed to represent the painters wife. Shes supposed to be like the main villain of the series and be behind most of the bad stuff going on i think by helping to make things and people get corrupted and all the rats are supposed to work for her.

Another great video, I'm so happy I subscribed to this channel! My idea of what the baby hitting her head could mean was that maybe the painter hit her, and the scene we see in the game is the lie he told his wife about what happened to her; it's a classic lie in abusive relationships. However, I don't see anything else in the game that *really* points to the painter physically abusing his daughter, and I liked your analysis of his guilt and how the painter sees himself in his child - I feel like the abuse plotline would make that guilt more surface-level (unless the creators had both in mind).
