I just now found your channel. A bridgeport, lathe, sandblast cabinet, TIG welder, '61 C10 AND a lotus 7?! And then you voice-over the speed video! You might be my spirit animal. Welp, I didn't have plans for the next few hours anyway...

Thanks! Keep in mind that what I did is very different than what everybody does. It would be easier to just do a squarebody front end and call it done.

@@GregWellwood Thank you so much for responding. I have a guy on face book who had a whole front end with a rack and pinion and disc brake kit from a 75 or 78 square body. Would that be an ideal swap?

I am not much of a Ford guy after changing a T-Belt on a Pinto stuck on the highway outside out little town where I apprenticed at age 14, but later found that Ford required you to use every size socket as all bolts where different lengths while replacing a TC&G on a full size Torino or sometime. I forgot after nightmares stopped. What is a Fox body. I saw the description but think about the tiny two door Pinto version 2.0 that was supposed to look sporty, if a 6’3” guy could get in it. Using bags and that range has their own challenges for toe and bump steer. Being retired, I want a R&P on my 67 C10, similar to my $150 65 Apache I bought when 13. I grew 7” at 11 and had a decent mush stash at 13, but Farm/School permits did not have photos on the late 60’s. A construction comp used to deliver diesel, oil and waist oil to the field graders, bulldozers and earth movers, thecwood bed was soaked and never rotted. On the 67 C10, I used C20 LCA’s but steering knuckles off the heavy half 89-2002 GMT400/Vans. After 99, they used tone ring for ABS. I think the 11/16” X 18 came from buckets of taps & dies from the “Tank” building years. If you lived in Omaha, speedway is 52 miles from here, no duty tax! I like the split-ring idea on the rack and will just change the P/S pressure relief valve for the 750-850 PSI used on racks. Making the adjusters for tie ends are different as rack’s inner is tiny. I follow a combo a 67-72C10 forum guy who used Caprice outer TRE’s and upper ball joint. I have heard many say the urethane bushing on control arms feel everything in the road. I want my wife to drive this, so stock height and 6 bolt 16’s but P245/75 to ride nice and cheaper to replace. How did this rack work out for you? I don’t want to drop 3K on kit. ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired Thanks, long time subscriber and hit like. GM used that “X” body frame for several decades I think! Best of luck!

Dude, very much appreciate you videos. Just a little fast and lacking of details. Would appreciate more info on this video, in particular on the rack and pinion. Thanks and keep up the good work!!

Yes. At the time, I had intended this project to be a LOT less videos. Just teaching the optimal width and placement of the rack & pinion would be a lengthy video in and of itself. I do mellow out a bit in later videos.

Do you still have any of the original 1961 steering parts you would sell? I’m from Kelowna and building an ls swapped 61 c10.

Love the information. If only I had all your shop resources. I'm picking up a 61 Apache Also. Would like to keep the xframe but also want it to lay rockers aired out. Is yours against the bumps tops you installed aired out? Do you have an episode where you installed your air ride? Thanks
@GregWellwood2 жыл бұрын
With no bumpstops, it sits on the ground. I didn't lay full frame because it's still a truck - I want a useable bed, and am only willing to raise the bed floor 4", but the front can sit on the ground (bumpstops so I don't divot the ground with an air loss at speed). An air ride video is in the works.

Hi. I’m adapting a mustang rack to my 66 Chevy truck What size pipe do you use to make your tie rod adjusting sleeve and how long did you make it??
@GregWellwood3 жыл бұрын
I machined them out of 1" solid round. The length you want will be determined by the other parts you use - I am using NOT normal front spindles for this truck, so I might not be the best example to follow.

Did you have to relocate the front shock mounts on the frame?
@GregWellwood3 жыл бұрын
I did, but I don't remember if I needed to or not. I probably must have, or I wouldn't have done it. They were placed so that the shocks were fully extended at full droop, which would make it easier for replacement. There was plenty of travel at full drop.

Why would you get rid of the torsion bars?
@GregWellwood3 жыл бұрын
I wanted to keep them, but pancaking the front crossmember would put the torsion bars where the frame rails are. Regardless, there is Air Ride in a box in the shop, so having or not having torsion bars is a non-issue.

I wish you'd slow down and go into more detail on certain things. Would've liked to see more info on the rack mounts or the pie cuts on the control arms. Good stuff though
@GregWellwood5 жыл бұрын
A 10° angle reduction on the upper arms would put the ball joint in a happy place, so I cut a 10° angle slice out of the arms - I looked at how the arms were originally formed by the factory, and tried to "reverse" that bend about the original axis. The rack mounts were just replicating the Ford "post" on the passenger side, and I made essentially a "C" clamp kind of thing for the driver's side that could be undone and the rack removed if I ever had to. I'm not convinced it's the best mount, but it's the best I could come up with.
