it's not just getting that understanding. but understanding ourselves as a human being is already hard. because with understanding came acceptance. accepting who you are as it is, is so hard. because humans naturally reject the idea that they have flaws at all. most end up hating on others who reflected their flaws. thank you for the fortune cookie, madam..

It is one thing to know about someone's struggles. It's another thing to understand them. That is the difference between sympathy and empathy. One can imagine the struggle and make an effort to provide comfort; appreciated as it might be, it can't get to the heart of the issue. The other has been through a similar struggle in the past, and has a far better idea of what to say and how to provide comfort and support, which can make actual strides in helping someone. We all can sympathize with someone most of the time. Only a few can empathize with that person. This fortune cookie could be seen as an extension of the second one; "understanding is the first step to acceptance," especially in the context of how yourself (flaws, strengths and all) or how others operate is a crucial step in making peace with yourself, or with others. Not sure if that was intentional, but I think it works. Thanks again, Layla. These are thought-provoking. And as someone who doesn't speak Indonesian, may I ask what "Kaboonga" means? Thanks in advance.
