How to Order (Sort) Your ClickUp Tasks | Alphabetically, Custom Fields, or Randomly

How do you organize your ClickUp tasks alphabetically? Or sort them by Custom Fields? Or put them in a totally random order in your List or Board view? In this video I'll demonstrate how.

how to sort "status" other way around?

Hi Layla, thanks for your work. If I am using manual sorting of my tasks. Do you know if there is a way to display the sorting rank of each task (ideally within a custom field)? That way, when I open a task, I would be able to see that its rank is for instance the 3rd of my list.

Thank you for this video. I learned alot with your vids. What about sorting by time due ? Clickup show up always the task due anytime in the day and last those with time due. For me, those with time due are prior to the others ? anyway to sort that properly ? Thanks

To sort your task to show Due dates with times at the top, click into the Due Date field and find sort. This will allow you to sort up or down. Sorting up will add the tasks with times to the top, while sorting down will move them to the bottom.

What exactly IS your Category in ClickUp? Is it a Status, Custom Field, List, or something else? That’d help me answer!

How do I reorder entire sections in a list view?

Sections are Statuses by default, so you’d need to edit your Statuses on a List to have they show up in a different order. 👍

Help Layla!! This new auto sort custom fields is driving me crazy! How to I make it go back to how I organized it instead of auto alphabetize? The help doc just says you can do it. Ahhh

I GOT YOU! 👍 There's a simple solution for this one. Go to your Workspace settings > locate ClickApps > Custom Field ClickApp. It was released a week or two after the new organization went live and it allows you to revert to manual sorting of Custom Fields. 😀

Maybe I'm just being bull-headed, but I've never figured out for a new task to land on the top, tasks always go straight to the bottom. And I guess that kinda makes sense. But scrolling to the bottom for the latest tasks gets tedious after a while. Maybe I just need to think harder on how to use due dates etc, some things don't have due dates. So after all that rambling, the question is, is this even possible? For new tasks to automatically go stay at the top. In my way of thinking, things on the bottom are the oldest, similar to an email inbox.

I get what you’re saying. Is it not working to use Sort By > Date Created and save the view settings? 🤔 Granted, you’d need to save this for each view (not fun) but you could then just make it your own Default View Template for the future. Universal view template settings would be 👌.

@@LaylaPomper Thanks but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but under date created I have to specify "is" and there is where none of the choices seem to apply. I've asked ClickUp some time ago and wost told basically sorry that's the way the cookie crumbles. But I'm going to try again, maybe things have changed since then.

Thanks so much. Your advice led me in the right direction. The part I was missing was adding a column for date created and then sorting. Saved the view and now it works!. Guess I had horse blinders on and assumed it should be a default sort option, instead of having to add columns.

@@mario312 I was about to say, "It sounds like you were looking in the Filter area vs. the column Sorting!"...but you seemed to have found that already! It's annoying to have to add the columns, but it'll accomplish what you're looking for. I'd probably just make the column as small as possible and shove it over to the far-right of my screen. 😄 Notice that Board View has a nice "Sort By" option, so no column is required for that View. No matter which view you're using, don't forget to save it as a View Template (and then make it your default) so your newly created Views also inherit this setting preference.

I feel like I'm missing something EXTREMELY simple or there is a clickup bug. Duplicating a Task with Subtasks just throws the Subtasks all in a random different vertical order than what my MANUAL order was set to when the template was created. The MANUAL sort order is kindof THE POINT of what I'm Templating, clickup. I don't want to click drag 11 different tasks back and I can't use a checklist because I need custom fields for test status to track the progress of the FAT. Honestly, this is my second attempt to switch over to using clickup and I'm already back in the angry category of clickup user. I love so many of the features but when it comes to simple "WHY IS CLICKUP DOING THIS" sticking points, it drives me over the edge very single time.

Checklists behave how you would expect, so I am settling with using checklists for these types of templates.... but man that is a drag!

Yup, this has been an issue with manual sorting for at least 6 months, if not a year now. 🤪 The workaround is to Sort your Subtasks by Task Name. Then, make sure all subtasks start with a numbered label. (ex: 1,2,3,4 or A,B,C). They show up out of order but then you can easily sort.

Hm....it no longer triggers "Save View" but it looks like manual reordering still "sticks" in most applications? 🤔
