Glad to see your plans are beginning to come together, Dave. I like what you're planning for the new extension. It'll be interesting to see how you work this out. The planning is just as interesting as the completed project. Like the addition of a trolley to a town scene, too. Things are moving along in the right direction. Keep us uptodate. Your fans are always interested.

I can see the town without a mountain. The trolley line in the middle of the road would be a great touch. I won’t mind the layout updates

I have an idea for the expansion portion. Let the loop expansions be on a combination of trestles and other sorts of elevations, which will put your trolley line at a lower level leaving a lot of room for roads and crossings under the trestles and embankments. There could be an elevated station or a passenger platform with stairs from the base to the loop track level. This would allow you to keep your track level with the existing original lower loops. Love the new bridge.

Absolutely love the 096 curves. Does take up a little more space but well worth it

Good to see the thought process in planning, leaving a little space is a good thing, I cut my tubular track with a band saw, clean cut and no support needed.

I always enjoy the thought process of track laying I have a few fake switches like you made and the trains run happy no derailments or dead spots I found auto malty pin plugs work good for lift out bridges 😃👍🚂

I like the deep gorge idea. Both the Pittsburgh Independent Hi-Railers and the Central Operating Lines have one. It's not always easy creating something that you will like in the end. Alot of tweaking and staging is involved. Even then things are not so clear cut. Nice jig that you created. You should market it.

the expansion looks very exiting. You could make some more room for new buildings if you moved that grain elevator, if you don't plan to have any switching to it, to a small addition of foam , just outside the biggest addition to the right in your video. The piece of foam could be about the size of the ground of the grain elevator including a short piece of track, where you could put a hopper to imply that there really is some rail activity. Probably this wouldn't be an obstacle. . I have done this on my layout when i have bought a station or other rail related building and it works great without having to use to much of the space in the room. Nice update !

Hey Dave, it's great to see you finally got your track and getting to work on your track plan. I used the Marx #1590 all metal red or black top automatic track switches with my Menards 0-gague tubular track. They are very easy to do all the necessary modifications to adapt to the 0-gague track without taking them apart. They are designed to work on separate constant voltage source and not track power and can easily be wired using the smaller lionel controllers. By adding the 0-27 track pins in the rail gaps, most all of the other models won't have a problem with roller pickups navigating through them and can easily be wired and modified for nonderai. l also use the manual version of these in my ladder yard if you don't want them to be automatic. These switches are a frogless design, and trains run through them as smooth as strait sections without any guide rails or wheel deflection. They are 0-27, but installing a larger radius curve section off the turnout helps to increase the radius to allow most 031 engine designs to navigate through them with ease. They are the smoothest running turnouts I've found to work with tubular. I know that it's either Ross or Gargraves that makes a good custom tubular turnout, but I bet there are not cheap. You can probably buy a dozen Marx switches for one custom switch. I've been using mine for 4 years without a problem. I really like mine, and switching is a breeze and trouble-free. Once I made all the necessary tweeks, I have never had any derailments, and I can run most all consists through them at full throttle. I super elevated my curves for high-speed trains😊. I used the 0-gague track pins to join them and shimmed them with 2" wide black foam plumbers pipe wrap with adhesive backing from Home Depot. It comes in a 30' roll. I've even used several layers of this for track bed to complete a section of track when I ran out of the Woodland Scenics foam track bed. I'd advise against using the newer plastic Marx switches.

You will find that those huge curved pieces dramatially improve the looks of your straight-to-curved transitions. My own ratio (when I actually built larger layouts) was 2:1. If my standard was curve was 30" radius, I used 60" radius for the easements---what a world of difference without taking up enormous amount a space for loops.

Hi Dave just a suggestion for cutting track I use a matabo or angle grinder with the real thin wheels on them will cut the track like butter. Itys's how I cut my track

Very nice. Keep the updates coming, as they are quite interesting. The expansion is really nice and it will add a great, new dimension to the layout. Tubular is the best way to go. The post-war engines work best on tubular, as MagneTraction works better on it and their wheels are contoured to fit just right. The O96 curves are nice. My outer main is O96 at one end and O72 at the other. As I've mentioned before, I use a combination of O72 and O54 on my inside main at the narrow end of the layout. It really only adds about an inch or two to the diameter, but the O72 curves soften the transition, making the curve less abrupt. I, too, don't have any switches on the mains at this time, so I can run my Marx engines that have the 'fat' wheels. That may change, as I want to put a 3x4 second level at the narrow end, just for Marx. That way, I can add some O72 crossovers and still run the Marx that have the 'normal' wheels on the mains. The grain elevator scene will be nice. I bought a handful of the K-Line O27 covered hoppers for mine. They look so much better than the big, scale cars and fit the scene quite nicely. Either way, what you are doing is pretty cool. An excellent video, as always.

If anybody can do it you should be able to the layout is looking really good what you got going my layout is like 8 and a half by 10 it makes it hard to be able to do anything to the track or something breaks if I can start over I would do what you did can't wait to see the finish

Da, The jig is awesome. To do a nicer job of the cut Get from menards a pferd 69817 .030 4.5” cut off it’s super thin and leaves less burs. You can use a 80 grit flap to take some off or a hand file. The nails are rusting due to humidity And being bare steel. Menards track is galvanized coated so no rust unless coating is removed. I don’t know what would be involved to change to o96 all around but I think it depends on size of equipment you are running / the look of it. I run those MTH shorty passenger cars and k line shorty passenger cars. O42-O54-O72 so that they look better. I went with postwar scale gg1s for example instead of scale ones. It STILL on o72 has some hangover! So reality is there is no such thing as big enough we always want bigger. It comes down to what your space can handle.

If you get prewar American Flyer switches, then your Marx locos will work fine. Prewar American Flyer has wide frogs that will let Marx single reduction motors through, but the rail's are high like the track that you are using.

Well yeah but I mean for the type of layout I would want to build. the O96 would fit on the expansion but I don’t think it would look right. With long straightaways and swooping turns, the layout would be huge!
