That was a great tutorial on track laying DAve and the kill-switch idea for the lift-out is very clever indeed! You've done a real service with video! Oh, don't worry about your layout zone being a mess, it could be worse. Mine's got a "BIOHAZARD!" sign on it!

Thanks! As far as I am aware I don’t have any biological contaminants in the train room, but who knows what’s under the mess!

Nice to see the expansion coming along. I’m with you on the use of screws. Because of that, I opted for using thinner plywood and used homasote sheets and top. I then lay my foam roadbed down with the track on top and run a screw through it into the homasote. Works quite well. I was able to bend the roadbed for my O-72 radius curves without splitting it down the middle, but I wouldn’t recommend any tighter than that without splitting. Great method for using foam!

Thanks so much. That sounds like a great option too. I haven’t tried to bed it to fit without cutting, maybe I’ll try that where I have O94

Very nice! I like how you do the roadbed. It seems quite solid, for sure. The micro switches are a great idea and easy to replace, if one fails. It will be good to see trains going all of the way around, when you’re finished. An excellent video, as always.

I’ve been very happy with how the bridge is working. I was just now thinking I should add some small lights so I know for sure the power is cut. It would be a shame if a switch failed and I didn’t realize it!

Yet another example of planning and focus on your part, Dave. For a guy who says of himself that he has no firm plan in mind, once your get going, you get things done quickly. The results speak for themselves: a neat and careful plan worked out to make a great expansion to the layout that looks like it belongs. The on/off switches to cut and restore the power to the track when the lift bridge section has to be raised and lowered is just brilliant. All is going well for you.

Hey Dave, through the magic of the video, the project seems to be advancing quickly. It appears that the addition will double the length of the run on the outside main loop. Adding backdrop scenery would be a nice touch. You could apply it to 1/4" or 1/8" thick masonite panels cut in half lengthwise and set in place with your silicone caulk along the back wall. I hand painted mine using latex wall paint for the blue sky like a primer base and used artist acrylic paints to paint the scenery. I painted my entire backdrop freehand, Bob Ross style, only using acrylic artist paints and a 1" wide artist brush. It wasn't that difficult to do and went much faster than I expected once I developed my skills. I found it to be a rewarding experience.
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby Ай бұрын
Thanks, it helps when I edit out all the detours and mistakes! I do hope to install a photo backdrop behind most of the layout. My original plan was to paint a backdrop and I did paint a good part of it sky blue, but that’s as far as it ever went. Since I like to video the layout so much I think a photo backdrop will really add to the depth of the shots.
@DRCRailroard
@DRCRailroard Ай бұрын
@dagryffynhobby A scenic backdrop will definitely add a whole other dimension, and your layout would be the perfect candidate. By painting it on you can hide other elements like the breaker box. The scenery can carry directly on to the breaker box and will blend in to hide it in plain site.

Really good idea to use kill switches. Someone left a bridge up on a 3 rail module at the Syracuse NY train show a few years ago. A Big Boy went off the edge. Spectators actually stood there and yelled but no one stopped the train! The owner of the loco was devastated. It happened just before I arrived. You can bet I would have grabbed that loco!

I am like you in that I have menards track and lots of postwar scale sized stuff as the majority not the latest stuff. But that mountain is so exaggerated I’d say get some plaster of Paris and plaster cloth and make it work it is very unique and covers the upper loop correctly
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby Ай бұрын
Thanks. One of the goals I set for this layout was to not use plaster at all. I hope to be able to carve the foam without a need for rock molds or plaster.

I’m wondering why the roadbed when the entire top is foam. Shouldn’t that isolate the noise? Why not just glue the tracks to the top foam? Gonna use gravel for roadbed with maybe artificial ties anyway……no? I use cut down and stained popsicle sticks and dab of hot glue under center rail with future plans to add aquarium gravel. All tracks are screwed down over felt. I don’t notice excessive wheel/track noise. Not saying anything negative about your process, just don’t see reason for extra foam roadbed. The “O” tube track is already taller. That being one of the reasons I use 027 track. Interesting project you have been sharing.😊
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby Ай бұрын
I also prefer the profile of O27, I went with the hi rail because that’s what I could find new. The foam sheets are a hard foam and don’t do much to deaden the vibration/ noise. The softer roadbed does. It makes an obvious difference. I’ve tried to record it for a video but the microphone doesn’t pick it up properly. I do hope to add additional toes and ballast, but it is at its root still a toy train layout. I’m not concerned about the scale of it.
@genemanno1533
@genemanno1533 Ай бұрын
I also prefer to keep trains a “toy to play with” and also could care less about scale. After all Lionel trains were intended for kids and I’m just an old adult kid. The hands on is the best part. As to your point on new track, yes new or like new 027 is difficult to find in quantity. Most all of mine is used some better than others. And they are a mixture of Marx and Lionel plus a few K line.
