One of the most endearing parts of Layton's segment on Blackpool Strictly was the VT of him visiting his family and hearing from his Mum and grandparents. The sacrifice that Layton's mum made in letting him go to London at the age of 11 so he could have opportunities brought a lump in my throat. That wasn't easy for her. When people want to go on about all his dance experience and it not being fair, blah blah, maybe factor in that Layton didn't go to nice , cosy Saturday classes near to his home. Layton grew up in a tough, working class area in the North of England as a mixed race boy who probably had to keep his feminine side under cover and play hard. It was beautiful to see the love in the family and Layton's love for his Mum. I think it was then I realised why he did Strictly as his Mum is such a fan. This bigger picture of Layton's life made me really want to know more about him as a person not just being wowed by his dancing.

I actually couldn’t put this comment any better if I tried!! Despite my suspicions on Layton’s experience, I can now understand why he did this show, for not only his family but for us too, he wants to make the world proud and I must say, he’s doing that! The love between him and his family are so heartwarming. Dances that are dedicated to family and friends, are worth a 10 for my liking. Disagree or not but that’s just my opinion. I now like him very much! I saw him in a video as a kid, the confidence! Wowee! He gave it his all and he’s done everybody proud. Yeah, to be moving to London at only 11 is shocking. Poor Michelle! She must’ve had difficulties back then 😢. And I honestly hate the fact that he was bullied constantly just because of his success. Pure jealousy! Look, he may have experience but he’s only trying to make us, his family and especially Nikita proud. This is the best partnership! When he said they were brothers! 🥺. He makes me smile when I watch him and I’m sure everyone apart from the haters. I honestly never knew Layton had to go through all those tough times as a child. It’s not nice, I’ve had the same problem sometimes too :(. He makes Nikita shine like a bright star! I love these two! Disagree with me or not but I think he’s a really nice person because of the love and affection he has towards the supporters throughout his Strictly journey and his family. @@PreppiesX0X0 great reply! The fact is Layton is authentically himself. He shows all aspects of himself and that is what I love about Layton, that's what he brings into his dancing. I've thought about this constant noise about his dance training meaning he shouldn't be in strictly and I think the arguments don't stack up for several reasons:- 1. It's not true that it's for inexperienced celebrities. If that was the case Layton would not have been invited on in the first place. 2. There have been many people with dance experience on Strictly. What is not fair is that only some people seem to get the flack. Strictly exec need to do better at speaking up about this. 3. At the end of the day, the public get.to choose who they want anyway so its a popularity contest and not a dance competition. 4. It can be very hard to establish who has an advantage over another person as there are so many aspects to a person's life. Yes, Layton got Billy Elliot at age 11 but to get that he also had to leave home and have that distance from his Mother something that was clearly very difficult emotionally for them both. For another person that could have been psychologically damaging not life enhancing. It's just not always possible to assess who has the greater advantages but at least we can start with looking at the fuller picture of a person's life, including the sacrifices that a person or their family had to make. I would say that Layton's biggest advantage is not actually his west end experience, it's his Mother and who would take that away from him? What I see in Layton is that he pours everything, mind, body and soul into his dancing and his connection with Nikita is on another level. I don't think I've seen this to the same degree with any other partnership on Strictly.

​​@@caroljohn39I agree with your reasoning and would ladd that those who complain about Layton's - and previous SCD competitors' - dance experience, seem to think that dance experience necessarily means you are going to be good, when it's not a given. I mean Les Dennis and Nikita Kanda had dance experience ... I rest my case! Bobby hasn't had any dance experience and Annabel only had ballet classes as a very young kid - she's not from the performing arts world - and look at them fly! I think so many people don't realise that many actors, presenters, popstars/musicians have been to acting/stage/performing arts schools, and so will have almost certainly done some kind of dance training as part of their time there. I just find the arguments of these critics are often childish and illogical! Anyone who performs in front of a camera/audience for a living has some kind of advantage on the show as dancing is not just about footwork and technique, but about being able to perform, and sell a routine. As someone who used to do singing lessons, I can vouch for the fact that that performance ability is not to be underestimated; it is key, and I found it really hard to perform, it asked many questions of myself I wasn't able to push and investigate at the time, and that had an impact on my perfomance. If you are technically brilliant but can't sell it, the audience will lose interest. Also, some professional performers are much better than others! Also, the show is about Ballroom (Standard Ballroom and Latin) numbers, not any other kind of dance, but the detractors lump all dance in together as if it is all the same thing - ludicrous! It can actually be harder to learn a different kind of dancing style as a dancer than to start with a blank canvas, much the same as it is with many other art forms and also language learning. It can be hard to learn German if you know Dutch, or Spanish if you know Italian because the languages are similar, they are 'false friends' so the potential for confusion is greater. It can be easier to learn Dutch if you know Spanish, for instance! Another factor people who criticise the celebrities with dance experience overlook is that if the show was made up of 15 contestants who'd never danced or performed before, the show would be tediously dull to watch after a while as not everyone with a blank canvas is able to progress through. Some just fizzle out or simply aren't up to it. Also, some contestants with previous dance or performance experience plateau after a while and have nothing more to give. We've seen all this on the show. It is also very hard for the BBC to find candidates without dance experience who are prepared to go on the show. So people need to be smarter and think before they criticise those contestants with some kind of dance or performance background, and they need to think about the other contestants' experience and apply the criticism fairly across the board before writing anti stuff! At the end of the day, I get tired of all this criticism. The show is a positive thing and we should be talking about that and how great the couples and the dances are, but it is important to stick up for these points as well. I can't believe, though, that it is week 10 now and we still need to do this! 🥱🙄 👍🤗❤

​​@@ME-Oxon Well said.... I've also pointed out here and elsewhere that by saying certain celebs shouldn't be on the show is pretty much insulting the professional dancers. I've seen a couple of comments saying that Layton could choreograph the routines himself or be/come back as a pro dancer. Quite bluntly, no he could not. The professional dancers have spent their entire lives learning ballroom/Latin to the point where some of them hold multiple championship titles. Added to this, they have to be able to choreograph routines and teach their celeb partners. Layton is a great dancer, but he has no-where near the wealth of experience in this area of dance as the pros do.

Isn’t Layton a professional though? I saw him in the West End playing Jamie in Everyone is Talking about Jamie. Absolutely phenomenal!!!! Maybe he is not a fully fledged dancer in all categories, but he can dance as if there is no tomorrow. I have not followed the series this year and now I regret. I was gutted for both of them not to get that fourth 10, again!!! You could see especially on Nikita's face that he wasn't happy about it. Craig robbed them off this year big time. Ellie and Vito danced well but not as well to get the same score as these two! I wanted to give Nikita a big hug because this guy has some serious choreography skills.

The Strictly pros get help choreographing the special category dances such as Couple’s choice, Charleston, Salsa and Argentine Tango. You find they often thank the guest choreographers when speaking to Claudia. For example, Vincent Simone consults and choreographs Argentine tango routines. Hope this helps

@lisar655 I know that, but not all the time. I didn't hear it for this routine that he got any help. Even if he did, he is an actual choreographer outside of this show. So I am sure he is more than capable of doing it himself. Whatever the case is, I think Craig is pushing it too far just because they are so outstanding. He is trying too hard to find a mistake. And to be dancing like this in those heavy platform boots, I mean come on. 😏

@@Ana-cv6kn Yes his cha cha with Tilly for example had excellent choreography; and that quickstep with Layton, so I have to agree with you - his Latin and Ballroom choreography is outstanding. He’s a fantastic dancer and amazing addition to the show.

Honestly when it comes to ellie and Vito my theory is Vito is the one everyone likes to be honest. I started to notice it a lot the night they got top scores for their paso doble it was Vito that was impressive not ellie

Score - *10/10* What does Craig want 😮‍💨 what more can Layton do? Backflip on Nikita's back? He is just exceptional I just cant wait to see him every week, the costumes were so badass wow wow wow 🔥 he looked incredible and Nikita was stunning. Talk about slaying the house down boots that was another level, I was so emotional at the end, I never expected pole dancing to be used on strictly and they absolutely nailed it, they were not out of sync at all, there was so much content in this it was jam packed and with the sass, tricks and pure zest in this I was in love, BEST DANCE OF THE SERIES 😍😍😍 if they don't win I'm not recovering!

I mean I get it, this is Layton's home turf, it needed to be quite literally perfect and he and Nikita were not perfectly in sync. Still amazing but I would be upset if it wasn't lol

Every dance they do is awesome, but I think (hope!) Craig is gonna give him a ten once Layton does a slow dance for a change (I know he's done some but most were pretty flashy), with perfect technique, no tricks, some solid chemistry and showing a softer side emotionally. What styles are we thinking?

OK. I saw that 1 arm out of sync at 0:53... I guess that's what Craig saw, but seriously. 1 arm in the whole routine, that's it!!! The rest was perfectly in sync... this was professional level... Id have liked them both to spin on the pole - maybe more lifts on the pole. Maybe they can do that in the final.

I have been re-watching this routine about five times by now. I just don’t see what Craig is nagging on about. It lacks synchronicity? Really? I think he needs to have an adjustment to his contact lenses. They are not robots, and it will never be completely perfectly synchronized but I just did not see what he apparently saw. This really blew me away. I think for the first time I actually think Layton was better than Nikita. This is completely his vibe and a routine that really suited him. And people, come on, a dance pole in the tower ballroom on Strictly come dancing!!! They slayed it! ❤️‍🔥 ❤️‍🔥 ❤️‍🔥 I have decided to mute the sound on the TV while Craig is spewing his nonsense.
