Glorious B flat! - The enormous size and wideness of the Russian landscape is reflected in Berman's Rachmaninoff, wonderful!

One of the greatest performers of Rachmaninoff Preludes - pity we have so few of them.

The best interpretation of C sharp I've heard.

I like too. But I prefer g Gilels!

IMHO, next to Rachmaninoff himself, Lazar Berman is the greatest interpreter of Rachmaninoff's piano music. It's just this simple. Thanks for this upload Gullivior, and the photos are fine too.

Sono d'accordo con Te. Il Maestro è il più grande interprete di Rachmaninoff. Non si può ascoltare di meglio al mondo! Solo Berman!

Absolutely has been my favorite for decades. As for younger (and living) pianists, I can't stop watching Alexander Malofeev... Rachmaninoff seems to grow from his core.

You need to know R's friend Moiseiwitsch (he even surpasses R at times--especially in the midsummer nights dream scherzo! and the b minor prelude

It is not! Lazar Berman was a boring alwdgehammer! More powerful louder than boring sledgehammer Lazar Berman=Mikhail Pletnev!! The 3rd Loudest was Erwin Nyiregyhazi!)

It's like he's taken chamber music and then re-transcribed back down for piano ... every meaningful voice is brought out.

You might also enjoy Richter, here, live in 1969: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXapmaxnnZt4pMU or in one of his other performances of this piece that can be found on KZbin. [Hungary, live, 1969: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZS7gplqhKaKbaM] [kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHqmeKSJZ7qno7c - with the score, I think it's the studio version?]

@@emilgilels I prefer Gilels. ;-) Richter is too pedantic for this piece and his temperament does not help.

I was a fan of Berman even before he first toured in the USA. But he's not at his best here. Tubby, congested and generally rhythmically inert.

Tubby, congested and generally rhythmically inert??-- Are we listening to the same performances? These interpretations rank amongst the most free flowing and sensitively paced that I know off. Maybe there a few that I don't know, but I don't know many better!

@@mattklammer5232 If you want to really hear what Berman could do, listen to the old Melodiya discs. Start with the Rachmaninoff Moments Musicaux.
